Via Argentum begins after Into the Underworld. Investigate missing royal silver by comparing the miners’ accounts with the official ledger, then follow the smelter clues to a secret mint. The key item to bring back is the Secret mint ledgers; rescuing the imprisoned coiners is optional. This walkthrough follows the route and outcomes reported by KCD2.org’s guide, updated September 22, 2026, with reward-route corroboration from PowerPyx.
Start Via Argentum after Into the Underworld
- When the journal names Kunzlin Ruthard, go to Ruthard Palace and help the family during the courtyard fight.
- Accept the investigation into whether Master of the Mint Ulrich Vavak is stealing royal silver.
- Go to the Horschan mines and find Christian of Pisek. Use the password “Via argentum”, follow him to a private conversation, and take his entry letter. Millenium’s walkthrough also places the quest after Into the Underworld and begins with the Ruthards’ situation: Millenium / MGG.
Compare the miners’ accounts with the ledger
Ask the miners how much ore was produced around the Feast of St. Petronilla. The reported figures are in-game quest details, not real-world mining data.

Dialogue checks, bribes, dice, beer, sympathy, or prayer may help you get the accounts. Record each worker’s number rather than guessing. Once you establish the ten-corve discrepancy, confront Chief Foreman Fett and ore merchant Hermann. Challenge the false figures and offer cooperation without promising that they will automatically be punished.
Reach the smelter and learn about Volkmar
Get access to the grounds
Buresh’s safe-conduct letter is optional, but may make entry easier. For the conversation, wear a clean civilian outfit and remove weapons and armor. If he says you are unsuitable, wash off dirt and blood and check for every remaining armor layer as well as weapons.
#1 Best Overall
Follow Shima’s lead
If Shima at Grund gives ordinary dialogue, the smelter clue may not be complete, or he may still be inside. Question a worker, follow Shima outside, wait until he stops, then try an appropriate check or offer a bribe to learn about Volkmar. If Volkmar is absent, finish this step and return during the day.
Volkmar may pay 100 Groschen. The map you obtain from him is the essential result for finding the secret mint.

Find the secret mint and secure the evidence
The mint is east of Grund, with an entrance near Buresh’s horse Agro. Be clear about the two keys: the Secret preghaus key opens the room holding the imprisoned coiners; Buresh’s records chest key opens the evidence chest. The first key does not unlock the evidence chest. A lockpick is a fallback for reaching the chest if you do not have the records key.
- Take the Secret mint ledgers. Verify that they are in your inventory before leaving; they are the crucial evidence for completing the report.
- Consider taking the minting die and Vavak’s letter. These add evidence, but do not replace the ledgers.
- Decide whether to free the coiners. Their rescue is optional and can add reputation; it is separate from securing the ledgers. PowerPyx also describes the optional rescue as a source of bonus reputation.
Report to Christian and choose whether to partner
Return to Christian and give a complete report. PowerPyx’s recommended route includes reporting the evidence and secret mint, mentioning the prisoners if rescued and the coin die, then accepting Christian’s plan. Its walkthrough reports a 625-Groschen outcome for that route; treat this as a route-specific result, not a guaranteed payout regardless of earlier choices or game state.

|---|---|---|
| Volkmar | May pay 100 Groschen | His map is essential to locating the mint, according to KCD2.org. |
| Buresh | Up to 475 Groschen | Amount depends on the route and choices, according to KCD2.org. |
| Accept Christian’s complete-report partnership plan | Up to 625 Groschen | Christian stays friendly in Oratores unless you later expose the secret-mint plan to Vavak, according to KCD2.org; PowerPyx recommends this report-and-accept route. |
| Refuse Christian’s plan | No partnership payment | Christian becomes hostile in Oratores, according to KCD2.org. |
These are distinct reported payments and outcomes, not one combined quest reward. Keep money, prisoner-rescue reputation, quest completion, and Christian’s later attitude in mind as separate decision points.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot stalled dialogue or quest progress
- Buresh rejects your appearance: remove weapons and armor, check for a hidden remaining armor layer, and wash away dirt or blood before trying again.
- Shima will not discuss Volkmar: question a worker, follow Shima outside, and speak after he stops.
- Volkmar is missing: complete the Shima clue and revisit by day.
- The table key will not open the evidence chest: it is likely the Secret preghaus key for the coiners’ room. Obtain Buresh’s records chest key or try the lockpick route.
- The quest will not conclude: check that Secret mint ledgers are in your inventory, then return to Christian and finish the report dialogue.
Walkthroughs note community reports of pathing, hostility, and dialogue-state problems, but no quest-specific official patch note establishes one universal fix. Follow the journal’s active objective and make a manual save before experimenting; no single recovery step is guaranteed to resolve every stalled state.
