Choose a value from the destination platform’s current recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then confirm your real upload connection can sustain it and test with representative content before going live.
What bitrate means for a live stream
Bitrate is the amount of video data sent each second, usually measured in kilobits per second (Kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps). A higher bitrate can preserve more detail, particularly in fast-moving or visually complex scenes, but it also needs more upload capacity. Setting it too high for your connection can make a stream unstable; setting it too low for the chosen resolution and motion can reduce image quality.
The right figure depends on the platform receiving the stream and the exact encoding settings. Platform recommendations are not interchangeable: they may cover different codecs, workflows, or even different stages of video delivery.
YouTube Live bitrate recommendations
YouTube Help’s current live encoder settings page gives the following recommended and minimum incoming bitrates. These are ingest recommendations for YouTube Live, not guaranteed viewer playback bitrates. The page does not show a publication date; the figures below reflect its current guidance checked October 3, 2026.

| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended | H.264 minimum | AV1 or H.265 recommended | AV1 or H.265 minimum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 42 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 34 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 21 Mbps | 7 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.3 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.3 Mbps |
For example, YouTube’s recommended incoming bitrate for H.264 at 1080p60 is 17 Mbps; for AV1 or H.265 at the same resolution and frame rate, the recommendation is 12 Mbps. Choose the column that matches the codec you will actually send rather than applying the H.264 number to another codec.
YouTube says it automatically detects encoder settings by default and transcodes incoming streams into multiple formats for viewers. That does not make the incoming bitrate table an output-quality ladder: it describes the feed you send to YouTube. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current table and requirements.

Settings that affect your choice
Destination platform
Start with the service you are streaming to. Use its current broadcaster guidance rather than borrowing a value from another service or a cloud video API. Platform guidance can reflect different ingest systems and workflows.
Codec
Match the recommendation to H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 as applicable. YouTube lists all three for live video, but the recommended rates differ by codec. For HDR over RTMP(S), YouTube recommends H.265 and notes that AV1 is not supported for HDR.

Resolution and frame rate
Higher resolution generally calls for a higher bitrate, and a higher frame rate increases encoding workload. Choose a resolution and frame rate that suit the content and intended audience, then use the matching row in the platform’s table. For fast-moving gameplay, frame rate may matter to the viewing experience; it still has to be supported by your encoder and connection.
Connection stability
A speed test is a useful check, but the connection must remain reliable during the stream, not merely reach the chosen rate in a brief test. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test your upload bitrate and advises testing the stream before starting. Its guidance does not specify a universal upload-headroom percentage, so do not treat any one margin as an official rule. Account for the fact that other devices or applications may also use the connection.

How to choose and test a bitrate
- Choose the destination. Open that platform’s current live encoder or broadcaster guidance and identify the recommended incoming bitrate for your intended format.
- Set resolution and frame rate. Decide what the stream should deliver, considering content, audience, and your encoder’s capabilities.
- Match the codec. Select the recommendation for the codec you are sending; do not assume H.264, H.265, and AV1 use identical rates.
- Check upload capacity. Run an upload speed test on the connection you will use. Choose a setting it can sustain reliably, taking other network use into account.
- Test a representative stream. Include the kind of motion and audio you expect during the event. Check the platform’s stream health indicators and adjust before the real broadcast if the feed is unstable or the image quality is insufficient.
- Monitor while live. Keep an eye on encoder and platform health. A setting that worked in a short test may still be affected by changes in the actual network or workload.
YouTube specifies RTMP or RTMPS transport, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport to and through Google’s servers. Check the current YouTube encoder settings when configuring your streaming software.

Twitch
Twitch’s official broadcasting guidance describes ingest bitrate as the data sent to Twitch and notes that higher resolutions require higher bitrates, while higher frame rates demand more encoding power. The available official guidance here does not establish a current numeric ceiling, so no Twitch maximum is asserted. Check Twitch’s current broadcaster documentation before choosing a value for a Twitch stream.
Twitch has also described Enhanced Broadcasting as using multiple client-side encodes and supporting 2K streaming, with bitrate varying across renditions. Availability and exact configuration details may vary; confirm current official settings before relying on them.
Google Cloud Live Stream API
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API publishes separate input recommendations and output-ladder bitrates. They answer different questions and should not be substituted for consumer platform recommendations. Its best-practices page, updated September 24, 2026, lists these examples:
| API stage and format | H.264 | H.265 |
|---|---|---|
| Input: 720p25/30 | 8 Mbps | 7.2 Mbps |
| Input: 720p50/60 | 15 Mbps | 13.5 Mbps |
| Input: 1080p50/60 | 20 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| Input: 2160p50/60 | 50 Mbps | 37.5 Mbps |
| Output ladder: 1080p25/30 | 6 Mbps | |
| Output ladder: 1080p50/60 | 9 Mbps | |
| Output ladder: 2160p25/30 | 15 Mbps | |
| Output ladder: 2160p50/60 | 25 Mbps | |
These are Google Cloud Live Stream API recommendations, not consumer-platform limits. The distinctions and additional formats are documented in Google Cloud’s Live Stream API best practices.
Common bitrate problems and fixes
- The stream drops or reports connection trouble: The chosen rate may exceed what the connection can sustain, or upload capacity may be fluctuating. Test again on the actual connection, reduce the bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, and check whether other devices are using bandwidth.
- The image looks soft or breaks up during motion: The bitrate may be too low for the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, or scene complexity. Compare your setting with the platform’s matching recommendation and test the same kind of motion you expect in the broadcast.
- The recommended figure seems too high for your connection: Do not force the setting simply because it appears in a platform table. Lower the resolution or frame rate and use the corresponding bitrate recommendation that your connection can sustain.
- The stream is configured with a rate from a different service: Recheck the destination’s own guidance. A Twitch ingest figure, YouTube input recommendation, and Google Cloud output-ladder value are not equivalent.
- YouTube reports a keyframe or encoding issue: Verify CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), as specified in YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
