You do not need elaborate effects or a particular editor: the best beginner workflow is one you can repeat reliably.
1. Record footage that is easy to edit
Before recording, check that OBS is capturing the sources you want—such as the game, microphone, and camera—and that the right devices appear in the Audio Mixer. Watch the meters while speaking and while game audio is playing. A moving meter is useful, but it does not prove the final mix sounds right, so make a short test recording and listen to it.
If you are unsure about setup, open OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. It takes into account whether you intend to stream or record, your computer’s resources, and, for streaming, network conditions. OBS recommends testing before a first stream or recording. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.
Choose a recording format with recovery and editing in mind
The recording’s container affects what happens if a capture is interrupted and whether your editor can open the file. OBS uses MKV as its default and recommends it for many use cases: an interrupted recording is generally recoverable, but some editing applications handle MKV poorly, so you may need to remux it. OBS also describes fragmented MP4 and MOV as formats that can offer chunk-based resilience with broader editor compatibility; actual support depends on the codecs and editing application. Ordinary MP4 and MOV require finalization, so an interrupted write can leave the file unrecoverable. Check what your editor supports before choosing. Details are in the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.

2. Pick an editor you can keep using
Choose against four practical questions: Does it fit your budget? Can your computer run it? Does it support your recordings and file formats? Does it have the features you actually need? YouTube advises starting with software already available to you when it fits the job. A beginner who mainly trims highlights may prefer a simple interface; someone who wants to learn color, effects, and audio may value having more controls.
Once you choose, learn the shortcuts for repeated actions—especially splitting, trimming, undoing, and moving through the timeline. YouTube’s video editing tips cover software selection, practice, shortcuts, pacing, jump cuts, and using audience-retention information as feedback when it is available.

3. Find the moment and make a clean first cut
Watch the recording to locate a moment worth sharing: a strong play, a funny exchange, a surprise, or a reaction. Begin close to the action, but do not cut away context the viewer needs to understand it. Keep enough lead-in for the setup and enough tail for the outcome or reaction to land.
- Mark the beginning of the useful setup or action.
- Remove dead air, repeated explanations, and technical pauses that do not add meaning.
- Keep the key moment and the reaction or result that completes it.
- Watch the cut once for meaning. If the action no longer makes sense, restore the missing context.
Jump cuts can remove unwanted lines and filler, but a shorter clip is not automatically a clearer one. YouTube recommends considering pace and rhythm; for a highlight, that means tightening pauses while preserving the timing that makes a reveal, joke, or play understandable.

4. Shape the pacing before adding effects
Watch the clip again, this time for distractions. Tighten pauses where energy drops, but leave room for a punchline, clutch play, reveal, or reaction. Use a zoom, title, transition, or sound effect only if it helps viewers follow or feel the moment. Effects cannot fix a cut that lacks a clear beginning, action, and payoff.
If you have already posted videos, audience-retention information can offer clues about where viewers stop watching. Treat it as feedback for future edits, not as a universal formula: it does not establish one ideal clip length or prove why every viewer left.

5. Make the voice clear and check the framing
Listen on ordinary headphones or speakers. The streamer’s voice should be understandable over game audio; adjust clip or track levels until you can follow the speech without straining. DaVinci Resolve’s Fairlight training covers level balancing, simple audio editing, dialogue repair, and mixing. There is no single correct voice-to-game ratio or loudness number established for every clip and destination.
For a vertical version, reframe deliberately rather than relying on an automatic crop. Check that the important gameplay action, facecam, and any essential on-screen text remain visible. Keep titles brief and readable. These are practical editing checks, not claims about a destination’s required dimensions.

6. Export and inspect the finished clip
Choose an export format and settings your editor and intended destination support. Blackmagic Design’s training covers online delivery presets and the render queue, but export presets can vary by editor version and destination; confirm the current options in your application rather than assuming a particular preset is required.
Before posting, play the rendered file from beginning to end—not just the timeline preview. Check for black frames, missing or unbalanced sound, an awkward cut, unreadable text, and an unintended aspect ratio. If anything is wrong, fix the edit or export and inspect the new file.
