Video Game Manuals Are Disappearing—and Deserve a Comeback

Game manuals did more than list controls: they taught mechanics, built atmosphere, and preserved how games were presented. Their best comeback would pair optional print with accessible, current digital help.

Video game manuals have largely moved from standard package inserts to quick-start leaflets, in-game help, websites, and digital archives. That shift has made instructions easier to update, but it has also sidelined a format that could teach a game, build its world, and make a physical edition feel complete. The case for bringing manuals back is strongest when they are treated as optional, thoughtfully designed companions—not replacements for accessible in-game and online help.

What a good game manual did beyond explain the controls

A booklet could be part of a game’s introduction before the player even pressed Start. Shigeru Miyamoto described how the original The Legend of Zelda manual combined gameplay instructions, story hints, and strategies for solving puzzles. As he put it, “So we decided to make a booklet with gameplay instructions, story elements to serve as hints, and strategic methods for solving puzzles.”

The manual also addressed players new to adventure games: “Additionally, a lot of people would be playing an adventure game of that sort for the first time, so the booklet would also serve to provide instructions.” The game itself pointed players toward the booklet with the message, “Please look up the manual for details.” In that design, instructions and atmosphere belonged together: the booklet helped explain how to play while suggesting the scale and mystery of the adventure. Nintendo’s interview with Miyamoto describes the manual’s role.

Why manuals became less visible

The change was not simply a choice between a printed manual and no instructions. Documentation could move into the game or online, where it could be searched, expanded, or updated. Nintendo’s 3DS support page gives a concrete example: some games included a printed Quick Guide rather than a full printed manual, while the full electronic manual was available in the software or on the game’s web page. That example shows how print could shrink even as documentation remained available; it does not establish that every game or publisher followed the same approach. Nintendo explains how to view electronic manuals on 3DS.

There is no comprehensive current count here of how many games ship with printed manuals, so “going extinct” is best understood as a cultural description of a broad format shift, not a measured claim that print has disappeared. The practical trade-off is clear: a physical booklet is browsable away from a screen and can be illustrated and kept, but it is difficult to update and can become separated from the game. In-game and online manuals can be searchable and easier to revise, but players may have trouble finding them, and access can depend on software or a service.

Why game manuals matter to preservation

Manuals document more than button mappings. They preserve how a game was introduced, what its makers thought players needed to know, and how its world was presented alongside the software. The Game Preservation Society lists manuals with boxes, magazines, advertisements, and technical documents as materials vulnerable to deterioration, loss, or dispersal. Its work includes collecting, preserving, researching, digitizing, and sharing original materials. The Game Preservation Society describes its preservation work.

One collection illustrates the effort involved without representing the whole market: Guinness World Records recorded Kirkland’s archive as 1,907 complete scans of physical PlayStation manuals, verified on 1 December 2022. That number describes one archive’s holdings, not the number of manuals that exist or the size of the collector community. Guinness World Records documents the archive record.

What a modern manual revival could look like

A useful model is not just to reprint a booklet and leave it detached from the game’s history. Xbox Wire’s account of Digital Eclipse’s The Making of Karateka describes an interactive documentary that brings manuals together with box art, design documents, and interviews as artifacts that help explain the game. The format makes documentation part of a curated historical presentation. Xbox Wire covers The Making of Karateka.

For a new release, a printed booklet could serve a different but complementary purpose: a concise, beautifully made guide to the game’s controls, systems, characters, and setting, designed to be read before or away from play. It should not carry essential information that players cannot access in the game or online. A booklet is difficult to revise after printing, so digital counterparts should carry current instructions when controls or game behavior change.

How to bring manuals back without making games less accessible

Any revival should meet the needs of players who rely on readable, discoverable instructions and tutorials they can revisit. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guidelines recommend readable language for critical UI and instructions, tutorials that are available on demand and teach core mechanics, and game-related user guides and support that are easy to find online. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guidelines make a useful standard for printed and digital documentation alike.

  • Make print an addition, not a gate. Put essential controls and guidance in the game, and keep relevant support online.
  • Design for browsing. Use clear organization, readable text, illustrations that explain rather than decorate, and a quick route to the information players need.
  • Keep the digital version discoverable and current. Link it from the game and support pages, and update it when instructions change.
  • Preserve the artifacts. When a game is reissued or documented, manuals can sit alongside packaging, design materials, and other records that show how the game was made and presented.

Print cannot replace an on-demand tutorial or an accessible online guide, and those digital resources cannot fully reproduce the pleasure or historical value of a well-made booklet. A thoughtful edition can make room for both.
