Event rules: the same sword can pass one event and fail another
The two official event policies reviewed take different approaches. Ubisoft’s esports policy is detailed and sets out a visual and physical test. VALORANT Esports’ guidance for Masters Toronto is shorter and focuses on the edge and material of the blade.

In practical terms, a sword that meets the Ubisoft requirements for soft construction and a visible tip could still fail a Masters Toronto check if its material is metal or mostly wood, and a blunt metal prop would fail the Ubisoft policy’s soft-material requirement. Always read the policy for the exact event you are attending.

Legal context: the rules depend on where you are
Sword law is set by jurisdiction and by the specific item. UK government guidance says possession of a “ninja sword” has been illegal since 1 August 2025 unless a specific legal defence applies. That guidance concerns a defined category of item in one country; it does not establish rules for every fantasy sword, blunt prop or licensed replica, and it does not say how other countries treat such objects. Before you buy, carry or display a sword-like object, check the current rules where you live and where you are travelling.
The UK Home Office’s 2025 policy options assessment gives an estimate of 1.6% for the proportion of homicides by sharp instrument that involve a sword, based on Home Office Homicide Index data. That figure concerns homicides in the UK. It is not a statistic about video game swords, replicas or knife crime in general, and it should not be read as a measure of how risky replicas are.

Before you buy, display, carry or bring a sword to an event
- Intended use: decide whether you want a display collectible, a costume toy or a convention prop. The right product changes with the answer.
- Materials and construction: confirm the materials, tip design and whether the item is plugged or has moving parts.
- Dimensions: measure the shelf, case, bag or car space you have. A 105 cm display sword and a 26-inch costume listing need different storage.
- Included parts: check for a sheath, scabbard or display stand, since the listing may not include them.
- Licensed status and seller: check that the product is sold by a seller you trust and whether its licensing is stated.
- Regional availability: confirm the product is sold in your country and that the channel you use ships there. Stock and availability can change.
- Event and legal rules: read the policy for the specific event and the current law where you live or travel before bringing a sword.
Can you buy a real-life replica?
