Malaysia-focused surveys suggest that gaming performance and price matter when people choose gaming devices, and that monitors are an important part of the experience. They do not establish whether Malaysian PC gamers generally prefer higher frame rates or better graphics. The available figures are useful context, not a current portrait of PC gamers alone.
What Malaysian survey evidence says about gaming priorities
The clearest local evidence comes from a Lenovo Malaysia survey reported by SoyaCincau in July 2021. Among its respondents, 74.01% named performance as the main factor influencing a gaming-device purchase. Price also featured in respondents’ choices: 28.80% selected RM1,000–RM3,000 as their preferred device price band, and 25.52% selected RM3,000–RM5,000. These are responses from that survey, not current estimates for all Malaysian gamers or PC buyers. SoyaCincau’s account of the 2021 survey does not isolate PC gamers’ visual-quality preferences.
Device use in the same survey also shows why its results should not be read as a PC-only finding: 36.85% of respondents said they mainly gamed on desktop, 28.92% on laptop, and 21.89% on a mobile device. The sample and figures describe the survey’s respondents; they do not establish the distribution among Malaysian gamers today.
Why monitors are part of the appeal
In the 2021 survey, 40.45% of respondents said they could not game without a gaming monitor. SoyaCincau’s report connects monitor refresh rate and response time with the gaming experience. These features relate to how quickly a display updates and responds, making them relevant to perceived smoothness and responsiveness. The survey does not specify a universally preferred refresh rate, nor does it show that respondents chose responsiveness over visual fidelity.

For a PC setup, refresh rate and response time are therefore useful monitor comparison criteria, but they answer a different question from graphics quality. The cited local evidence indicates that monitors matter to many respondents; it does not identify one ideal specification for Malaysian players.
How broad gaming data changes the picture
Malaysia’s gaming audience includes more than PC players. Deloitte’s Let’s Play! 2022 country profile, published in 2023 using 2022 study data, reports that 93% of Malaysians were aware of video games and 63% were commercially engaged. It gives average monthly gaming-related spending among video gamers as MYR 116 and identifies mobile as the most common medium by reach and playing time. Those measures describe video gamers broadly, not PC hardware preferences. Deloitte’s Malaysia country profile is useful context, but mobile’s prominence cautions against treating the national gaming audience as synonymous with PC gamers.

A regional study offers another reminder that players are not one uniform group. Samsung Newsroom Malaysia’s 2023 account of the ONE Esports Southeast Asia and Oceania Gaming Insights Survey, conducted in 2022, reports distinct gamer types in Malaysia and says 56% of surveyed gamers played at least a few times a week. This is regional survey reporting, not a PC-only measure of Malaysian visual preferences. Samsung’s account of the gaming insight study helps frame differences in frequency and player segments, rather than settle which graphics or performance settings they prefer.
Graphics quality or frame rate: what can be concluded?
No cited source establishes a Malaysian PC-gamer-wide preference for higher frame rates over higher visual fidelity, or the reverse. The local survey’s broad performance-priority finding is not a direct graphics-versus-frame-rate comparison. “Performance” can mean different things to different players and does not, by itself, show what image quality or frame rate they value.

It is more accurate to treat the choice as dependent on the player and game than to declare a national winner. Someone who values a responsive display may weigh refresh rate and response time heavily; someone focused on image detail may prioritize visual settings. The evidence here does not quantify how common either preference is among Malaysian PC gamers.

Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey is monthly global platform data. It can describe hardware reported by participating Steam users, but it does not by itself reveal what Malaysian PC gamers prefer: global participation is not a Malaysia-specific sample, and hardware adoption is not a direct measure of visual priorities. Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey should not be treated as a proxy for local opinion.
