If your Vimeo Livestream Studio stream has no sound on YouTube, first check whether the silence affects every viewer. Then trace the audio from its source through Studio’s input and program meters, the encoder output, and YouTube’s Live Control Room. Silent headphones alone do not mean the stream is silent: Studio’s local monitoring is separate from stream audio.
Start by finding out who cannot hear the stream
Ask another viewer to check the live stream from a different device or network. Compare what they hear with the YouTube preview and your own playback. That separates a viewer-side playback problem from audio missing in the stream itself.
- Only one viewer hears silence: Have that person check the device’s volume and mute state, the browser or app, selected audio output, and network playback. Vimeo’s live-audio guidance recommends checking whether all viewers have the issue; differences can be related to an individual viewer’s network conditions.
- Everyone hears silence: Trace the signal upstream through Studio, the encoder output, and YouTube ingestion.
- Your headphones are silent, but the meters move: Check local playback and monitoring before changing stream settings. Headphone monitoring is not the same as program audio.
If the problem continues or viewers report different symptoms, capture player debug logs while the problem is happening. Vimeo recommends providing support with the encoder, operating system, and playback browser details. Do not include your private stream key in screenshots or support material.
Check the audio source and routing in Livestream Studio
Confirm the intended input and channel assignment
In Livestream Studio, inspect the intended source in the Inputs settings and Audio Mixer. Studio supports per-input audio settings. In stereo mode, left and right channels can be assigned to the input fader; in mono mode, individual channels can be assigned. Confirm the right microphone, camera audio, mixer, or audio-only input is selected, that its channel assignment matches the connected source, and that its meter responds when sound is present.

If the device is missing, first verify that the operating system recognizes it and that any required driver is installed. Vimeo notes that some audio devices need drivers; Studio can add an audio-only input from a supported system device.
Follow the signal to the program output
Watch the meters from the input through the production mix to the stream/program output. Vimeo describes Stream Out / Record Out as the typical representation for program audio monitoring. If the source meter moves but the program output does not, check the relevant mixer routing, mute state, and level controls. A moving input meter only proves that Studio receives a signal at that point; it does not prove that the signal reaches the program mix.

Separate silent headphones from silent stream audio
If Studio meters show audio but your headphones do not, check the operating system’s selected playback device and Livestream Studio’s headphone volume and source-monitoring buttons. The operating system’s playback-output controls differ between Windows and Mac, so make sure the selected output is the device you are actually using.
Studio’s headphone buttons determine which sources you hear locally. Vimeo states that this local monitoring control does not stop audio from going to the stream or recording. Verify the actual stream using YouTube’s preview or another viewer rather than diagnosing outgoing audio from headphones alone.

Check YouTube Live Control Room for ingestion errors
Open YouTube Live Control Room for the event and inspect stream health and any audio-related messages. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance identifies missing or multiple audio streams, unsupported audio codecs, sample-rate problems, and audio with more than two channels as possible ingestion errors.
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s published encoder guidance recommends AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo, it recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and a 128 Kbps audio bitrate. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not proof that any one setting caused the silence. Use the actual Live Control Room message and your encoder’s configuration to guide changes. YouTube’s published recommendations differ for 5.1 surround sound; its guidance supports 5.1 only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS.

Check that the event’s current YouTube Stream URL and Stream Key are entered in Studio. Vimeo’s Studio-to-YouTube instructions say this workflow changed as of October 2024 to use the YouTube Stream URL and Stream Key. Older instructions may therefore describe a different setup. Never share or publish the stream key.

Inspect audio in the encoder itself and listen to a local recording if one is available. YouTube recommends checking the stream directly in the encoder and looking for audio or video issues in the local archive.

- The encoder preview and recording are silent: Focus first on the source, capture device, input selection, mixer routing, or encoder configuration. The audio is already missing before it reaches YouTube.
- The encoder preview and recording have audio, but viewers do not: Check YouTube’s ingestion health messages and the outbound connection. YouTube distinguishes problems with source or encoder output from cases where an apparently healthy encoder stream may have an outbound internet problem.
Change one item at a time so each test tells you something. Vimeo’s troubleshooting guidance suggests restarting the encoder, testing with as few workflow components as practical, removing and re-adding the audio source to establish a fresh connection, and matching capture-device output settings such as bitrate and sample rate to encoder settings. Also check the cables and equipment feeding the inputs.
Inspect physical connections and escalate with useful details
If the signal disappears at an input, check that the cable is seated, undamaged, and appropriate for the device. Check the equipment feeding that input, too. External microphones may require their own power or specific settings; Mic versus Line selection, sample rate, and cable choice can matter. Try a known-good cable only when the signal path points to a physical connection fault; replacing a cable is not a general fix for every silent stream.
If multiple viewers still hear silence despite a healthy local source and encoder preview, assess upload stability and the outbound internet connection. When contacting Vimeo support, provide the encoder, operating system, and playback browser, and capture debug logs while the issue is occurring. Keep the YouTube stream key private.
