What YouTube changes about the decision
A relay service’s ability to stay connected is not the same as YouTube’s ability to preserve the feed as a replay. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous feed beyond that threshold should not be treated as one complete, reliably archived video.

If you need VODs, plan separate sessions shorter than 12 hours and verify the resulting archives in YouTube Studio. That creates more operational work: each session needs a start and end plan, and any gap or restart can affect continuity for live viewers. If uninterrupted viewing matters more than a single archived replay, treat the live feed and the archive as separate deliverables.
When Vimeo or Restream is the better choice
Choose Restream when a long relay session is the priority
Restream’s guidance says it does not cap stream duration, making it easier to plan a continuous feed than Vimeo’s stated 12-hour Advanced and Premium limits. Its caveat matters for operations: schedule a controlled daily restart rather than assuming a stream should run indefinitely without intervention. Restream’s reviewed setup page does not establish a comparable destination ceiling, so confirm your exact multistream requirements with the provider.

Choose Vimeo when its event and destination setup fits
Vimeo can simulcast a live event to YouTube. Its direct YouTube integration supports up to 10 destinations, while its RTMP method supports up to 20. Those published limits can matter if you need to send the same event to many destinations. For 24/7 operation, however, Vimeo documents the extension as an Enterprise add-on; confirm eligibility and terms before building your schedule around it.
Vimeo recommends using appropriate equipment, testing early, rehearsing, and monitoring stream health. Those practices are relevant to either provider: a service choice does not remove the need to watch for encoder, network, account, or platform interruptions.

Preflight checks for a YouTube stream
Resolve account access and activation before configuring a continuous schedule. Restream’s YouTube setup guidance says live streaming must be enabled, first-time YouTube activation can require phone verification followed by a 24-hour wait, and the connected Google account must own the YouTube channel—not merely have manager or editor access. These requirements can delay launch for a team-managed channel.
- Confirm YouTube live access. Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel and complete any phone verification or first-time waiting period before the planned launch.
- Connect the owner’s account. Use the account that owns the channel when connecting YouTube to Restream; do not assume a manager or editor login is sufficient.
- Set up the encoder or relay. YouTube’s encoder workflow provides a server URL and stream key. Enter them in the relevant encoder or RTMP setup and keep the key private; limit access to people who need to operate the stream.
- Test the scheduled start. For Vimeo RTMP, check YouTube Live Control Room because a scheduled stream may still require a manual Go live action.
- Rehearse recovery. Test monitoring and restart procedures before going unattended. The available vendor guidance does not establish uninterrupted uptime for either service.
Archives, monetization, and content rights
Keep the archive plan separate from the live plan
A stream lasting 12 hours or longer may not be automatically archived as a complete YouTube replay. If the full recording matters, arrange a separate recording or divide the programming into shorter sessions, then confirm the archive in YouTube Studio rather than relying on the relay service to create it.

Monetization depends on YouTube eligibility
YouTube’s encoder help says a channel in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize a live stream. Using Vimeo or Restream does not itself establish eligibility or substitute for YouTube’s program requirements.
Check rights before looping material
Before putting a video or playlist on a continuous feed, make sure you have the rights needed for the material and its audio, and review YouTube’s applicable rules. A relay service does not grant content rights or guarantee that a stream will avoid copyright claims or other platform action.
