Nintendo announced Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics at its September 12, 2025 Nintendo Direct, and the collection launched on February 17, 2026. It is a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack benefit for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, but playing requires one of two dedicated Virtual Boy viewing accessories. Nintendo’s announcement said the service would be available only in the United States and Canada.
What Nintendo announced—and what has happened since
Nintendo’s September 12, 2025 Direct recap introduced a selection of games from its stereoscopic 3D Virtual Boy system for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. At the time, Nintendo said the games would arrive over time, with players using Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2 controllers and a dedicated accessory inspired by the original hardware. The collection launched on February 17, 2026. Nintendo’s current US software listing gives that release date and lists the download at 109 MB for both Switch and Switch 2.

What you need to play
You need both an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership and one of Nintendo’s Virtual Boy accessories. A standard paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is enough to buy an accessory, but Expansion Pack is the tier Nintendo specifies for access to the game library. Nintendo says the accessories are sold through Nintendo Store in the United States and Canada to eligible paid members; free-trial members are not eligible.

No. Nintendo requires one of the dedicated Virtual Boy accessories to play the collection. The accessory is part of the viewing setup, not an optional way to enhance games that otherwise run in a standard Switch display mode. Nintendo describes the two choices in its accessory overview and FAQ.
