VR is easiest to choose when you start with your existing hardware and the experiences you want—not with a specification sheet. If you own neither a console nor a gaming PC, a current standalone headset is usually the simplest first step. A PS5 owner should look at PlayStation VR2, a capable PC owner can consider PC VR, and someone mainly seeking a premium personal cinema or Apple productivity features may prefer Apple Vision Pro.
This guide explains the differences, equipment, setup, comfort, safety, privacy and starter content you need to make a sensible choice.
What virtual reality actually is
A VR headset shows a slightly different image to each eye and tracks your head position, creating the perception of a three-dimensional world. Motion controllers add buttons and tracked movement so you can point, grab, throw, draw and press objects. Some systems also track your hands directly.
VR, mixed reality and spatial computing
| Type | What you see | Typical uses |
|---|---|---|
| Virtual reality | A fully computer-generated environment | Games, simulations and immersive films |
| Mixed reality | Digital objects over or within a view of your real room | Fitness, games and home visualization |
| Cinematic mode | A large virtual screen showing ordinary 2D content | Movies, television and flat games |
| Spatial computing | 3D windows and objects anchored in space | Work, communication and media |
Inside-out tracking uses cameras on the headset to follow your position and controllers without external base stations. Room-scale VR lets you move inside a defined physical area. Seated, standing and room-scale are different play modes, not interchangeable labels. A 180- or 360-degree video can be immersive without being interactive VR.

Choose the right route into VR
| Your priority | Most relevant platform | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Simplest first experience | Standalone headset | Battery life and mobile-class hardware |
| You already own a PS5 | PlayStation VR2 | Requires the console and a cable |
| SteamVR simulators and enthusiast games | PC VR or a PC-compatible headset | PC cost and troubleshooting |
| Wireless PC play | Standalone headset with PC streaming | The gaming PC and a good network are still required |
| Premium Apple media and productivity | Apple Vision Pro | Cost, comfort and a different gaming ecosystem |
Standalone VR and mixed reality
A standalone headset runs applications without a console or gaming computer. It is generally the best fit for first-time buyers, families seeking simple setup, casual games, fitness, mixed-reality apps and immersive video. You still need a platform account, Wi-Fi for downloads and updates, and regular charging. Storage, facial fit, lens clarity and comfort can matter more than headline resolution.
“Wireless” here means the headset operates by itself. Wireless PC VR is different: the headset receives rendered video over a network, but a VR-capable computer remains essential. Current model names, storage, bundles and prices change, so check the manufacturer’s live store immediately before buying. Beginner buying context is available at VR.org and its gaming comparison.
PlayStation VR2
PS VR2 is designed for PS5, not PS4. PS VR and PS VR2 are separate platforms, and PS VR games do not automatically work on PS VR2. It suits PS5 owners who want console VR, OLED display characteristics, headset feedback and Sense controllers. Sony’s compatibility and setup details are at the compatibility guide and the PS VR2 support page.
Room-scale play requires at least 2 m × 2 m. On PS5, set the area through Settings > Accessories > PlayStation VR2 > Set Play Area. For Windows PC use, you need Sony’s PS VR2 PC adapter, a DisplayPort 1.4 cable (sold separately according to Sony), USB 3.0, Bluetooth 4.0 or later, Steam, SteamVR and the PlayStation VR2 App. Sony lists Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit, 8 GB RAM and minimum-class processors around Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100, with supported graphics hardware; it recommends an RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT or better for stronger performance. Drivers and supported hardware can change, so verify the live requirements at Sony’s page. Some PS5 features do not carry over to PC.

PC VR
PC VR offers SteamVR, demanding driving and flight simulators, engineering software and enthusiast games. It also demands more: graphics settings may need tuning, USB and DisplayPort connections can fail, and wireless play depends on router quality and distance. Do not label a computer “VR-ready” from its CPU or GPU name alone; check the exact headset and game requirements. SteamVR is distributed through Steam.
Apple Vision Pro
Apple Vision Pro is primarily a premium spatial-computing and media device rather than the obvious first choice for conventional VR gaming. It supports visionOS apps, Apple TV, Safari, Photos, immersive experiences and Mac Virtual Display. Apple describes eyes, hands and voice as core inputs in its visionOS overview.
It can be compelling for a personal cinema, spatial videos and Apple services, but it uses a different app and input ecosystem from mainstream Quest and SteamVR gaming. Compatible games may use hand tracking, gaze-and-pinch interaction, Apple Arcade or a connected controller instead of conventional motion controllers. Check current price, regional availability, comfort options and content on Apple’s support hub before treating it as a purchase.
What you need before buying
- The headset and, where required, tracked controllers.
- A charging cable and power source.
- A platform account; some first setups also require a phone or computer.
- Reliable Wi-Fi for downloads, updates, casting, multiplayer and wireless PC streaming.
- A clear area with room for the mode you intend to use.
- Optional headphones or earbuds.
- Glasses clearance or prescription inserts if needed.
Budget for comfort and convenience rather than assuming accessories are mandatory: replacement facial interfaces, improved straps, battery straps, lens inserts, controller grips, cases, charging docks, longer cables and headphones are common optional upgrades. Check compatibility and return terms for each accessory.

Set up your first headset safely
Before putting it on
- Charge the headset and controllers.
- Install the required companion app and sign in or create the platform account.
- Update system software and firmware.
- Remove furniture, cables, pets, drinks and fragile objects.
- Use even room lighting. Avoid direct sunlight aimed at lenses or tracking cameras.
- Decide whether the session is seated, standing in place or room-scale.
- Scan the room and set floor height and the software boundary.
- Adjust the strap and lens spacing until the image is clear; attach controller wrist straps.
A boundary reduces risk but cannot detect every hazard or stop a collision. Keep a physical buffer beyond it, and never play near stairs, ceiling fans, glass, televisions or moving pets. Sony’s PS VR2 guidance is at its support page. Apple warns that environmental systems may miss glass, mirrors and stairs; see Apple’s safety guidance.
Apple Vision Pro requirements
Apple’s setup instructions require a charged battery, the power cable connected to the audio strap, an Apple Account with two-factor authentication, strong Wi-Fi and an obstacle-free area. ZEISS Optical Inserts may be needed for prescription or reader correction. The setup guide, published May 15, 2026, is at Apple Support.
PS VR2 on Windows
- Connect the PC adapter to a USB 3.0 Type-A port.
- Connect DisplayPort 1.4 directly from the PC to the adapter.
- Connect the adapter’s power supply.
- Connect the headset to the adapter with USB-C and turn it on.
- Open the PlayStation VR2 App and follow its setup.
- Install or open Steam and SteamVR.
- Pair both Sense controllers over Bluetooth.
- Press the PS button to open the SteamVR dashboard.
Sony’s PC instructions and SteamVR controls are documented at the PC support page.
Prevent motion sickness and protect comfort
Artificial movement without matching body movement, low or inconsistent frame rates, camera bobbing, rapid turning, poor fit and long first sessions can all cause symptoms. Start with a stationary tutorial, seated mode, teleport movement and snap turning. Choose short sessions, reduce visual effects and camera movement, and take frequent breaks. A fan or fixed airflow cue helps some people, but no setting eliminates sickness for everyone.

Stop immediately at nausea, dizziness, headache, eye strain or discomfort. Remove the headset, rest and resume another day with gentler content. Do not try to push through symptoms; some people remain motion-sensitive.
What to try first
A sensible progression
- Complete the headset tutorial.
- Try a stationary interactive demo.
- Play a short rhythm or puzzle game.
- Watch a seated film or immersive video.
- Try a mixed-reality app.
- Enter a private or moderated social space.
- Attempt stronger locomotion only after stationary experiences feel comfortable.
Good beginner categories
- Painting, sculpting and creative tools.
- Guided meditation and light fitness.
- Virtual tourism, museums and educational experiences.
- Short immersive documentaries.
- Seated cockpit or theater experiences.
- Social spaces with blocking, muting and reporting controls.
Leave these until later
Rollercoasters, free-flying, high-speed smooth locomotion, falling simulations, rapid artificial camera movement and long sessions are poor first choices. Horror can also be overwhelming if the user is already anxious.
Movies and video: know what “VR film” means
- 360-degree video: a spherical recording you look around inside.
- 180-degree stereoscopic video: a forward-facing view that can provide a stronger depth effect.
- Immersive film: may add spatial audio, volumetric capture or interaction.
- Virtual cinema: a large simulated screen showing standard 2D films and television.
- 3D movie: stereoscopic video viewed on a virtual screen or as an immersive experience, depending on the app.
A headset does not automatically include every streaming service’s VR app. Catalogues vary by country, platform, subscription and operating-system version. High-resolution downloads consume storage and require a fast connection. For long viewing, comfortable fit, clear subtitles and good audio matter as much as novelty. Apple documents Apple TV, Cinema Environment viewing and visionOS media in its user guide.

Look for virtual screens and productivity, social communication, fitness, travel and museums, education and training, meditation, creative tools, remote collaboration, browser media, accessibility features and mixed-reality home design. Distinguish native standalone apps from PC applications streamed to a headset, console applications, flat-screen apps in a virtual theater and web content opened in a browser. Those labels affect performance, controls, storage and compatibility.

Accounts, privacy, children and purchases
- Confirm the exact platform edition before buying. A PS VR title is not automatically a PS VR2 title, and a flat game is not automatically a VR game.
- Set purchase controls before handing over the headset; check whether child accounts can access adult-owned content.
- Review camera, microphone, voice-chat and room-scanning permissions.
- Teach social users to mute, block and report abusive or unwanted behavior.
- Check current age guidance rather than treating a headset as universally suitable for children. Meta’s comfort and safety material is at its safety guide.
Apple provides Screen Time and Content & Privacy Restrictions for purchases, apps, explicit content, web content and Game Center, with availability varying by country or region and some controls not carrying over to child accounts: Apple’s guidance.
Troubleshoot the common failures
Tracking or boundaries are wrong
- Re-scan the room and reset floor height.
- Improve even lighting without aiming sunlight at the headset.
- Remove mirrors and reflective or visually repetitive objects.
- Clean tracking cameras and lenses using the manufacturer-approved method.
- Charge, restart and update the headset and controllers.
- Keep controllers within the headset’s tracking view where required.
The image is blurry or performance is poor
- Reposition the headset, adjust lens spacing and clean the lenses.
- Check whether the title is native or streamed from a PC.
- Lower render resolution or disable motion smoothing when performance is unstable.
- For wireless PC VR, test router placement, Wi-Fi congestion and distance.
A controller or PC connection fails
Check battery charge, re-pair the controller and restart. On PC, verify USB 3.0, DisplayPort 1.4, Bluetooth, graphics drivers, SteamVR runtime selection and the PlayStation VR2 App. Sony specifically recommends reducing render resolution or disabling motion smoothing for some PS VR2 SteamVR problems; see its troubleshooting instructions.
Accessibility and final buying check
Assess each game or app individually for glasses clearance, prescription inserts, headset weight, facial pressure, seated or one-handed play, subtitles, caption size, colour-vision needs, height and reach calibration, hand tracking, controller alternatives and hearing accessibility. “Supports accessibility” is not a universal guarantee, and an app requiring crouching or room-scale movement may be unsuitable even when the headset itself fits well.
- Do I already own a PS5, capable gaming PC or neither?
- Are my priority games, immersive films, fitness, social spaces, work or Apple media?
- Can I clear a safe area and store the headset securely?
- Will the fit work with my glasses, head shape and preferred play position?
- Have I checked the exact game, platform edition, storage and accessory requirements?
- Have I included optional comfort upgrades, software and any subscriptions in the total cost?
- Can I use the retailer’s return window or a demo to test comfort?
- Have I set privacy, age and purchase controls before another person uses it?
The older introductory overview at TechRadar remains useful for basic terminology, but its age makes it unsuitable as a current buying or setup authority. Start with your hardware and comfort requirements, then choose the library and ecosystem that actually support the experiences you want.
