No official source published for Visions of Mana names a single best class for Val. Square Enix’s own material establishes what each class is tied to and what switching does, but it does not rank the classes against one another. The most useful way to choose is to match a vessel’s effect and its class’s weapon to the enemies and the playstyle you prefer.
Is there a best class for Val?
There is no evidence-backed universal answer. The official sources available for this guide describe the classes and the effects of several vessels, but they do not test classes against each other, publish damage figures, or recommend a single setup for every enemy. Any statement that one class is “the best” would be an opinion, not a finding.
What the sources do support is a simple decision: each vessel changes Val’s class, and each class brings a different weapon and set of abilities. Your choice is therefore a trade-off between the vessel’s battlefield effect and the class identity that comes with it.
Val’s base class and the eight vessel classes
Val’s base class is Moribito. Square Enix’s official character page lists eight further classes, each linked to one elemental vessel. The class names below are the English names used in this guide; the official page presents them in Japanese, so check the in-game menus for the localized labels in your version.

What changing class actually does
Square Enix states that equipping an Elemental Vessel changes a character’s class, and that a class changes the character’s weapon and abilities (official game systems page). In its PlayStation Blog interview, the developers add that equipping a vessel also changes the character’s costume. The same interview says every vessel can be equipped by every character, so the eight classes are available to the whole party, not only to Val.
Because the class is set by the vessel, switching is a deliberate act with a clear cost: you give up the weapon and abilities of the class you were using. The official pages do not say whether a class change can be made in the middle of a fight. Check the in-game help text before planning around mid-battle switching.

Vessel effects you can compare
The developers’ July 29, 2024 interview, published on the PlayStation Blog, describes the design intent of three vessels in detail. The table shows what each source states for all eight.

|---|---|---|
| Jinn Boomerang (Wind) | Berserker | Not stated in the sources reviewed |
| Luna Sphere (Moon) | Rune Knight | Not stated in the sources reviewed |
| Undine Bottle (Water) | Aegis | Not stated in the sources reviewed |
| Salamander Candle (Fire) | Duelist | Not stated in the sources reviewed |
| Dryad Wand (Wood) | Lord | Not stated in the sources reviewed |
| Gnome Shovel (Earth) | Swordmaster | Defense, with a rocky shield (producer Masaru Oyamada, PlayStation Blog, July 29, 2024) |
| Wisp Lantern (Light) | Weapon Master | Ray links that reflect damage between enemies (PlayStation Blog, July 29, 2024) |
| Shade Sight (Darkness) | Paladin | Gravitation that draws enemies into a black hole (PlayStation Blog, July 29, 2024) |
Three effects are documented, and they illustrate the range of what vessels do. Gnome Shovel is built around protection. Wisp Lantern punishes groups by passing damage between linked enemies. Shade Sight pulls enemies together. For the other five vessels, the official material reviewed here gives no effect description, so comparisons involving them should wait until you can read the in-game descriptions.
Vessels are not only for combat. Square Enix describes them as tools for exploration and for field mechanisms, which means a vessel can matter even when you are not fighting.

Weapon feel and abilities
Each class changes the weapon Val uses, which is the most direct source of how a class feels in play. The official pages do not describe the handling of each weapon in detail, so judgments about reach, speed, or combo style should come from your own time with each class.
Abilities are tied to the Elemental Plot. According to the official systems page, the Elemental Plot becomes available once class change is unlocked, and developing it teaches abilities and special moves. Progress is connected to each element. The same page describes two broad ability sources:
- Abilities that improve stats or otherwise help in battle.
- Abilities that come from developing the Elemental Plot or from equipping certain items.
Special moves consume MP and come in several types, including magic and traps. The official pages do not give the Elemental Plot point costs, the order in which abilities unlock, or the chapters in which each class becomes available. Those details should be checked in the game itself.

Choosing a vessel for the fight in front of you
The developers designed the vessel effects to encourage switching between characters, and they state that they avoided making switching compulsory. Director Ryosuke Yoshida said: “That said, we took care not to make it so important that switching became compulsory.” That means no encounter should require a particular vessel, though some will reward one. The following framework is editorial guidance built on the documented effects, not a tested ranking.
- Enemies that threaten the party with heavy hits: consider Gnome Shovel (Swordmaster), whose documented concept is defense.
- Groups of enemies you can line up: consider Wisp Lantern (Weapon Master), whose ray links pass damage between enemies.
- Scattered enemies that are hard to reach: consider Shade Sight (Paladin), whose gravitation draws enemies toward one spot.
- Fights against a single target, or enemies whose effects you have not yet read: choose the class whose weapon and abilities you find most comfortable, and check the in-game description for the other five vessels before committing.
If you prefer a playstyle over a battlefield effect, let the weapon decide. Because every character can equip every vessel, you can keep a favorite class on Val and rotate the others across the party.
What this guide cannot confirm
The official material reviewed here does not establish a chapter-by-chapter class unlock order, Elemental Plot costs, class-specific damage numbers, endgame builds, or boss-by-boss matchups. Any article that gives those figures without a named source is repeating guesses. Version-specific balance changes are also outside what these sources cover, so check patch notes if a class seems to have changed.
