For most creators, OBS Studio is the better choice for looping a video on YouTube Live. Add the file as an OBS Media Source, enable Loop, and use the encoder details from YouTube Live Control Room. VLC is useful inside OBS when you need a playlist or VLC-backed media support; it is not necessary for a simple single-file loop.

YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify a separate encoder setup for India. Choose resolution and bitrate for the upload connection available where you will stream, rather than assuming a country-wide speed.

VLC vs OBS: which should you use?

Need Better fit Why
Loop one local video file and send it to YouTube Live OBS Studio Its Media Source has a direct Loop option, and OBS provides the scene and encoder workflow for the stream. OBS Media Sources
Play a playlist through OBS OBS with VLC Video source The VLC Video source supports playlists and has Loop Playlist enabled by default; VLC must be installed. OBS Media Sources
Choose an ingestion protocol YouTube’s stream configuration RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended ordinary workflow. HLS is an alternative for workflows that call for it, but has higher latency. YouTube encoder settings · YouTube HLS setup

This is a workflow recommendation based on the documented OBS and YouTube features, not a hands-on performance comparison. The available guidance does not establish that VLC cannot stream directly, nor does it provide CPU/GPU benchmarks or unattended-run reliability comparisons. OBS is the clearer default because its documented workflow combines looping media and YouTube encoder settings.

Loop a video in OBS and send it to YouTube Live

1. Create the scene and add the file

  1. Open OBS and create a scene for the stream.
  2. In the Sources box, select + and choose Media Source. Give it a name and select OK.
  3. In the Media Source properties, enable Local File, browse to the video, and turn on Loop. OBS lists support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. OBS Media Sources
  4. Confirm the video fits the canvas as intended. Check that its audio is present and at a sensible level in the OBS mixer.

2. Get the YouTube stream details

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or manage the stream there and use the stream configuration displayed for your encoder.
  2. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if available, and connect or enter the stream details requested by OBS. Use RTMPS where supported, following YouTube’s endpoint and application-path instructions. YouTube’s RTMPS integration guidance specifies port 443. YouTube RTMPS ingestion
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it, show it in a screenshot, or share it; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings.

3. Set the output for your connection

Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations as the baseline. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum interval of four seconds. Its bitrate table varies by output resolution; choose the matching current entry rather than copying a bitrate intended for another resolution. YouTube encoder settings

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

In OBS, these controls are under Settings > Output and Settings > Video. Set the output resolution to the resolution you intend to send, select H.264 and CBR in the streaming encoder settings, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds. Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s table, then make sure the actual upload connection at the streaming location has enough capacity for it. If the connection cannot sustain the selected output, reduce resolution or bitrate and check stream health again. The cited guidance does not establish a special India-only setting.

4. Test the complete loop before relying on it

  1. Start the stream as a test or private/unlisted broadcast if appropriate for your channel, and confirm the preview appears in Live Control Room.
  2. Let the clip reach its end and verify it returns to the beginning cleanly. Listen to the transition and watch for a black frame, silence, clipped audio, or an unexpected pause.
  3. Test with the same motion and audio characteristics as the intended broadcast. Monitor YouTube’s stream health messages and make adjustments before scheduling or promoting the stream.

When VLC makes sense inside OBS

Use VLC as a playback source when you need OBS to play a playlist or want the VLC-backed source’s media support. Add a VLC Video source from the Sources + menu, add the media items to its playlist, and check Loop Playlist if you want playback to repeat. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default, and notes that VLC must be installed for this source. OBS Media Sources

For a single file, the regular OBS Media Source is simpler: it has an explicit Loop property and does not require the separate VLC installation. The protocol and YouTube delivery settings are still governed by the encoder configuration, not by a presumption that VLC is faster.

RTMPS or HLS?

For an ordinary SDR live stream, use RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried through SSL and recommends it for YouTube Live. YouTube encoder settings

Use HLS only if the workflow requires it, such as a relevant HDR path or another supported HLS use case. HLS sends segmented video rather than a continuous RTMP stream, so YouTube warns that it has higher latency. Its published HLS setup requirements specify segment durations of 1–4 seconds and no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube HLS setup

Copyright, reused content, and channel rules

Looping a file technically does not grant permission to broadcast its contents. Before streaming, confirm you have the rights to the video, music, artwork, and any other material in it, including material that may trigger a Content ID claim. YouTube may restrict or interrupt a live stream when it detects copyrighted content. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and channel monetization policies; monetization eligibility and originality are separate from whether OBS can send the stream.

Do not assume that a continuous loop is automatically eligible for monetization. Reused or repetitive programming can raise policy issues depending on the content and channel as a whole. Check current YouTube rules for your case rather than relying on the encoder setup as proof of compliance.

Troubleshooting a looping YouTube stream

  • The video stops at the end: Reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. If you are using VLC Video, check Loop Playlist.
  • The source is blank or unsupported: Confirm the file path is valid and the file opens locally. OBS documents common formats, but an unusual codec or damaged file may still fail; test that exact file before going live. If using VLC Video, verify VLC is installed.
  • YouTube receives no signal: Check that OBS is streaming to the correct YouTube stream configuration and that the stream key is current. Re-enter or reset a potentially exposed key; verify the protocol and RTMPS endpoint/application path against YouTube’s instructions.
  • Stream health reports buffering or dropped frames: Compare the selected bitrate with the current YouTube recommendation for your resolution and the upload capacity at the actual streaming location. Reduce bitrate or output resolution if the connection cannot sustain the selected setting.
  • The image is soft or does not match the source: Check OBS output resolution and ensure YouTube’s bitrate recommendation corresponds to it. The source may not contain more detail than its original resolution.
  • Audio is missing or the loop transition is jarring: Check the source audio and OBS mixer meters, then inspect the file’s beginning and end. Correct the recording or transition if the discontinuity is in the media itself.
  • Latency is higher than expected: Confirm whether the stream uses HLS. HLS uses segments and has higher latency than continuous RTMP ingestion; use RTMPS for the ordinary workflow unless your requirements call for HLS.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays your uploaded video, not a camera feed.
