Which vMix license do you need for a 24/7 playlist?
Choose based on what the channel must produce, not simply because it will run around the clock. vMix lists Playlist and streaming in both editions. HD supports output up to 1920 × 1080, while 4K supports up to 4096 × 2160. If your finished stream is 1080p or lower and you only need a repeating playlist, HD covers the listed requirements. vMix’s comparison table gives the edition specifications and current listed license prices.

When 4K is worth the extra license cost
4K is justified when the actual stream output needs to exceed HD or your production depends on capabilities not listed for HD. The vMix comparison lists two recorders and Instant Replay for one camera in 4K, but not in HD. Its edition guide groups 4K support, separate recording of each camera, two simultaneous fullscreen or external outputs, one-camera Instant Replay, PTZ control, and up to four vMix Call callers with 4K, Pro, or Max. Check the edition guide if any of those features matter; do not buy 4K just for the fact that the playlist will be continuous.

What a 24/7 loop can and cannot automate
vMix supports continuous playback, but it is not a full broadcast scheduling system. Its Knowledge Base says Playlist can play videos back-to-back in a constant loop. Video List can treat a list as one input, play videos back-to-back, loop or randomize them, and avoid loading every video at once, which may consume system resources. The same article says vMix is primarily designed for single live events and does not support time-of-day scheduling. That means a basic always-repeating channel is different from a schedule that starts specific programs at set clock times. See vMix’s scheduling explanation (last updated January 17, 2025).
Build a basic repeating playlist
- Prepare the video files you want in the rotation and add them to a vMix Playlist or Video List input.
- Set playback to run videos back-to-back and enable looping; use random playback only if a shuffled sequence is acceptable.
- Test the full rotation and confirm the output resolution and stream settings before leaving the channel unattended.
The cited vMix guidance establishes loop and list playback, not a time-of-day program grid or a guarantee that a computer and internet connection will remain available indefinitely.

Connect vMix to YouTube Live
vMix documents two setup paths. You can create or configure a stream in YouTube Studio, optionally schedule it there, then enter the stream key in vMix; alternatively, you can choose YouTube Live Stream Now in vMix to create the stream from the application. Follow the current vMix instructions for the selected workflow: How to stream to YouTube Live (last updated April 9, 2025). These are setup steps, not an uptime guarantee.
Plan for YouTube archives separately
A 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as one guaranteed, complete YouTube archive. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends making a local recording as a backup, and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also says streams at 1440p and 2160p are automatically archived. For a continuous channel, decide how to manage recording and archive continuity rather than assuming a single all-day stream will produce a complete replay. Check the PC before committing to a 24/7 setup
vMix’s minimum hardware guidance lists Windows 10 or 11, a 2 GHz quad-core processor, 4 GB memory, a dedicated DirectX 10.1-compatible graphics card, and a 1920 × 1080 display. Its recommended specifications include an Intel Core i7 at 3 GHz or higher, 8 GB RAM, an SSD, dedicated Nvidia graphics with 2 GB or more memory, and a 1920 × 1080 display. Actual performance depends on inputs, outputs, recording, resolution, and the computer. See vMix’s hardware requirements before relying on a machine for continuous operation.
An SSD is a reasonable option if you will record locally or keep a local backup, but vMix does not list it as a minimum requirement just to stream a playlist. Neither vMix nor YouTube’s cited guidance establishes a specific drive capacity or model; choose storage based on the recording format, duration, and retention you need.

vMix lists HD at $350 USD and 4K at $700 USD for lifetime licenses. The comparison says lifetime licenses include the first 12 months of free updates; vMix’s product page says the license can be used indefinitely and describes a $60 update upgrade for 12 additional months of version updates after the included period. vMix Max is listed at $50 USD per month and includes 4K, but it is a subscription option rather than the HD-versus-4K lifetime choice.
