To beat Volbaino in The First Berserker: Khazan, learn his hammer and nail sequences, dodge fire-infused strikes, and leave any arena level that catches fire. The fight uses two connected levels, so the ladder and drop-down routes are part of the encounter—not just scenery.
Where to find Volbaino
Volbaino is the boss in Phraugh Village and is listed as the game’s fourth main boss. Neoseeker’s walkthrough routes through the village to a temple boss room. The guides covering the encounter were published in 2025; details could differ if a later game update changes the fight.

How to handle his attacks
Focus on recognizing the end of each sequence. Use Brink Guarding against the regular strings if your timing is reliable, then punish during recovery. Fire-enhanced strikes call for a different response: dodge them rather than relying on a guard, since the fire can add burn damage.
Hammer and nail strings
One described sequence starts with a horizontal swing, continues with two alternating vertical swings, and ends with a jump attack. Watch the full string before committing to an attack of your own. A successful guard through the sequence can create an opening after the final hit.

Spike plant and ground smash
When Volbaino plants his spike and follows with a ground smash, dash away from the resulting shockwave. Move back in once the attack has passed and he is recovering.
Low spin, slams, and lunge
Another sequence begins with a low 360-degree spin, then six vertical attacks, followed by a Brink Attack. The walkthrough recommends guarding the slams and dodging away from the lunge, which is described as unblockable. Use the recovery after the lunge to get a punish rather than trying to trade hits.

Grab and whirlwind
A grab and a powerful whirlwind are also flagged as threats. Treat their startup as a cue to prioritize avoiding damage; the available walkthrough guidance does not establish a precise timing counter for either move.
How to survive the fire phase
Fire is both an attack threat and an arena-positioning problem: Volbaino’s strikes can deal fire damage, and sections of the floor can become hazardous. When the level you are standing on ignites, move to the other level using the ladder or a drop. Starting on the upper level and dropping down when it becomes unsafe is one practical route, but the correct exit depends on your position. If the lower level is burning instead, climb back up.

Do not remain on burning ground to preserve a punish window. Once you are on safe flooring, resume watching his attack sequence and take openings after it ends.

Neoseeker suggests placing Fire Cleanse and Fire Resistance potions in quick slots and mentions the Necklace of Sealed Fire as a resistance option. These are preparation suggestions, not required equipment or a proven optimal loadout.
No specific weapon is established as necessary for this boss. Dual wield, greatsword, and spear each support different combat emphases across the game; use the weapon you have developed and can time confidently. The central challenge is responding to Volbaino’s sequences and relocating when the arena level becomes unsafe.
