VP9 Codec Explained: What YouTube Creators Need to Know

VP9 is relevant to YouTube 4K playback, but creators generally do not need to upload VP9. Here’s how it differs from YouTube’s H.264 upload recommendation.

No—you generally do not need to upload in VP9 to get good quality on YouTube. YouTube’s current upload guidance recommends an MP4 container with H.264 video. VP9 matters on the playback side: YouTube says viewers need a VP9-capable browser or device to watch new 4K uploads in 4K. An upload codec and the codec YouTube prepares or serves for playback are different things.

What VP9 is—and what it is not

VP9 is a video compression codec developed by the WebM Project. A codec describes how video is encoded and decoded; it is not a file container or a special YouTube export preset. MP4 is a container, while H.264 and VP9 are codecs that can encode video.

For creators, the practical distinction is between the file you upload and the versions YouTube makes available for viewers. YouTube’s upload recommendations identify H.264, while its 4K playback note identifies VP9 support as a viewer requirement for new 4K uploads. The guidance does not establish that uploading a VP9 file is necessary, or that a creator can force YouTube to use VP9 for a particular playback rendition.

What YouTube currently recommends for uploads

YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings list MP4 as the container and H.264 as the video codec. YouTube recommends matching the frame rate of the source. Its bitrate values are upload recommendations—not VP9 playback bitrates.

Frame rate Match the source frame rate
2160p SDR, standard frame rates 35–45 Mbps
2160p SDR, high frame rates 53–68 Mbps

The two 2160p bitrate ranges above apply to SDR uploads in YouTube’s guidance; do not treat them as universal targets for HDR, other resolutions, or live encoding. Check the current YouTube page for the full recommendations for the resolution, frame rate, and color format you are uploading.

YouTube also says: “To view new 4K uploads in 4K, use a browser or device that supports VP9.” That describes viewer compatibility. It does not say creators must encode uploads as VP9, nor does it document a creator setting that guarantees a particular playback codec.

What VP9 can offer—and what the claim means

Google describes VP9 as a format for web and mobile video, including ultra-high-definition video, and notes support for 10-bit and 12-bit encoding and HDR. Google says VP9 “can reduce video bit rates by as much as 50% compared with other known codecs.” Keep the qualification: “as much as” is a broad maximum claim, not a result guaranteed for every source, encoder, setting, or comparison.

A lower bitrate can be useful where bandwidth or storage is constrained, but the outcome depends on the content and encoding choices. Motion, fine detail, frame size, frame rate, quality target, encoder speed, and playback-device decoding capability all matter. The sources cited here do not provide a current independent benchmark comparing VP9 and H.264 across creator content, so there is no defensible universal percentage or “always better” verdict.

When a creator should consider encoding VP9

Ordinary YouTube uploads

For a typical upload, begin with YouTube’s published MP4/H.264 recommendations and a frame rate that matches your source. This is the straightforward route supported by the platform’s general upload guidance; a separate VP9 encode is not a stated requirement.

A specific VP9 distribution workflow

Consider encoding VP9 directly when you have a concrete reason to deliver VP9 files—for example, a distribution or adaptive-streaming workflow that calls for that codec. Google publishes VP9 encoding guidance, including FFmpeg/libvpx examples. Treat those as technical guidance for creating VP9 files, not as a YouTube upload mandate.

Video on demand versus live

Google’s VP9 recommendations for file-based video-on-demand encoding are not a live-streaming recipe. Encoding a single output also differs from building an adaptive ladder of multiple resolutions, where a player can choose among renditions as network conditions change. Larger frame sizes can improve image detail, but they require more delivery bandwidth and more processing power to decode.

Google’s VP9 VOD settings: useful starting points, not YouTube rules

Google’s file-based VP9 settings recommend constrained-quality (CQ) encoding with bitrate bounds. Its examples include CQ 31 at 1080p and CQ 24 at 1440p, and its broader recommendations describe a two-pass workflow and 240 frames between keyframes for a web/mobile example. These are Google’s starting points for its stated VOD use case—not required YouTube settings and not settings to copy into a live encoder without checking that encoder’s guidance.

The appropriate choice depends on the source, target devices and networks, number of renditions, quality goal, and the time and hardware available for encoding. Test representative footage from your own channel and inspect the result at the intended viewing sizes rather than assuming that one CQ value or bitrate works for every video.

How to choose between H.264 and VP9

Decision factor What to consider
Upload compatibility and simplicity YouTube’s general recommendation is MP4 with H.264; use it as the default for ordinary uploads.
Quality at a given bitrate Results vary with footage and settings. Google makes a qualified maximum bitrate-reduction claim for VP9, not a guarantee for an individual creator’s video.
Encoding time and hardware Compare the time and compute needed for your chosen encoder and quality target; no single cost or speed result applies to every setup.
Resolution and frame rate Higher frame sizes require more delivery bandwidth and decoding capability. Match your workflow to the source and intended viewing conditions.
Viewer device support YouTube’s guidance specifically says a VP9-capable browser or device is needed to view new 4K uploads in 4K.
One file or adaptive delivery A single-resolution file and an adaptive set of renditions solve different distribution needs; choose based on the delivery workflow.

VP9 and YouTube: historical context

In a post dated April 6, 2015, Google described YouTube’s decision to encode videos in VP9 and reported that viewers had watched more than 25 billion hours of VP9 video in the preceding year. Those are historical, company-reported figures, not current viewing totals. The same post described VP9 as bringing HD and 4K quality at half the bandwidth of other codecs known at the time; that dated statement should not be read as a present-day independent comparison. Google also published a historical announcement about transcoding live streams into multiple resolutions and VP9/DASH ingestion. It is platform history, not current instructions for creators to ingest live video in VP9.

Can you make YouTube serve VP9?

The current YouTube upload guidance establishes that VP9 support matters for viewing new 4K uploads in 4K, but it does not document a creator control or promise that a particular upload will receive a particular playback codec. An export setting, upscale, or channel size is not established by that guidance as a way to guarantee VP9 playback. Use YouTube’s current upload recommendations and check the playback device when troubleshooting a viewer’s inability to select 4K.

Common VP9 and upload misunderstandings

  • “YouTube recommends VP9 uploads.” Its general upload page lists MP4 and H.264. VP9 appears in its separate note about viewer support for new 4K uploads.
  • “The upload bitrate table tells me the VP9 playback bitrate.” YouTube explicitly frames those figures as recommendations for uploads.
  • “VP9 always halves bitrate at identical quality.” Google’s stated reduction is “as much as 50%”; actual results depend on the material and encoding workflow.
  • “Google’s VOD settings work for live streaming.” The file-based recommendations do not address live encoding or specific device and network needs.
  • “I can force VP9 by exporting at a certain resolution.” The cited YouTube page does not establish such a control or guarantee.

What this means if your content is a YouTube live stream

VP9’s file-based VOD recommendations do not specify how to configure a live encoder. For a live stream, follow current YouTube Live encoder guidance for the encoder and stream type you use; do not transplant the VOD CQ values or keyframe example as though they were live requirements. If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded video live around the clock, the key decision is the streaming workflow, not whether a VOD VP9 setting will force YouTube playback to use VP9.
