Either can run a 24/7 YouTube stream, but neither guarantees uninterrupted service. A spare PC uses your existing hardware but relies on home power, internet and your maintenance. A VPS moves the encoder off your home connection, but adds compute and potentially substantial outbound-transfer costs. Choose based on measured costs, tested encoding performance and which failure dependencies you can manage.
What YouTube requires from either setup
YouTube receives a stream from an encoder; it does not require the encoder to run on a local PC or a VPS. What matters is the delivered protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval. The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations for H.264 ingestion settings, not a guarantee of picture quality or a required minimum upload speed.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant-bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings and the capabilities of your encoder before configuring output, since guidance and supported options can change.
In YouTube’s words, “Make sure you choose a quality that will result in a reliable stream based on your internet connection.” A connection’s upload capacity needs to carry the stream consistently, with practical headroom for variation and other traffic. Don’t assume a universal headroom multiplier: test the actual connection and content, including representative audio and movement. YouTube also advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream,” and to monitor stream health and messages while live.

Spare PC: use what you own, accept the home dependencies
A suitable spare PC can be an economical choice if it encodes the chosen feed comfortably and your home upload path is stable. It still needs to remain powered, connected and maintained. Home power and ISP interruptions can stop the encoder or break its connection to YouTube; updates, reboots and recovery are your responsibility.
- Before committing: run the encoder with your intended settings and representative content, and check CPU load and output stability over an extended test.
- For power interruptions: a UPS may bridge a short outage. Size it for the measured load and the runtime you need. It does not prevent an ISP outage, equipment failure or a longer power loss.
- For internet reliability: test sustained upload performance and consider other household traffic. The relevant path is the PC’s upload to YouTube, not just the download speed shown in a plan.
- For recovery: decide how you will notice a failed stream, restart the encoder and confirm that YouTube is receiving it again.
VPS: remove the home host, not the work of operating it
A VPS runs the encoder on a provider’s machine, so the encoder-to-YouTube connection does not rely on your home power or ISP. You still need adequate compute for the actual encoding workload, monitoring, restart and recovery procedures, and a plan that covers sustained outbound traffic. A low advertised compute price is not proof that a plan can encode your stream; test the selected plan with your content and settings.

DigitalOcean is one provider example, not a universal VPS benchmark. Its pricing page, retrieved October 3, 2026, lists bundled Droplet plans starting at $4/month with outbound transfer starting at 500 GiB/month. DigitalOcean’s bandwidth documentation says additional outbound Droplet transfer is $0.01 per GiB, the allowance is pooled across a team, and inbound transfer is free. Plan availability, prices and allowances can change; check the provider’s current plan terms and accounting rules before buying. The smallest plan is not established as adequate for video encoding.
Estimate VPS transfer before choosing a plan
For a continuous stream, a useful arithmetic estimate is Mbps × 0.45 ≈ decimal GB per hour. At 10 Mbps, that is about 4.5 GB per hour, or about 3,240 GB over 30 days, before protocol overhead and unit-conversion differences. This is a calculation from bitrate, not a YouTube-published statistic. A stream sent from a VPS to YouTube is provider outbound traffic where that provider bills it. Compare the estimate with the plan’s included allowance, exact units, pooling rules and overage rate.

Compare total cost and operational fit
There is no universal monthly cost for a spare PC: its power draw and your electricity rate matter. Likewise, the DigitalOcean figures above describe one provider’s published plan and transfer terms, not the cost of every VPS or a guarantee that a plan will suit your encoder.

Include a modem, router or other equipment only if its consumption is incremental to this project. Add a hardware purchase or replacement only if one is actually needed. Without your measured wattage and electricity rate, a monthly electricity figure would be guesswork.

Make the choice—and plan for failure
Choose a spare PC if it already handles the encoding workload, your home upload is adequate, and the electricity and maintenance trade-offs work for you. Choose a VPS if separating the encoder from home power and internet matters more, and you have verified both compute capacity and sustained transfer costs. Neither option is categorically more reliable: there are no comparable uptime measurements here for a local setup versus a VPS, and your local power/network history and chosen provider and plan differ.
- Whichever you choose: run a pre-launch test with representative audio and movement, watch YouTube’s stream-health information, and confirm how you will detect a drop.
- For local hosting: know how to restore the encoder after a PC restart, power interruption or home internet outage.
- For a VPS: test the real encoder workload on the selected plan and configure a way to restart and reconnect it; moving off the home connection does not eliminate provider or stream failures.
