“VR streaming” can mean four different things: watching 360° or VR180 video in a headset, sending PCVR gameplay from a computer to a headset, casting the headset’s view to another screen, or broadcasting that view to a live audience. Choose the workflow that matches what you want to do; the apps, equipment, and network requirements differ.
Choose the right VR streaming workflow
| What you want to do | Stream direction | Typical route |
|---|---|---|
| Watch immersive video | Online video service to headset | YouTube VR or another compatible video app or browser |
| Play a PCVR game wirelessly | Windows PC to headset | Steam Link, with a supported headset and suitable Wi-Fi |
| Show the headset view on a TV, phone, or computer | Headset to another display | Meta Quest casting or Meta Quest Developer Hub for a developer workflow |
| Livestream gameplay to viewers | Headset to a live platform | A supported broadcasting app, such as BeamXR Live where currently available |
Confirm that your headset is on the exact app’s supported-device list before installing an app or buying accessories. Compatibility is not universal.
How to watch 360° or VR180 videos in a headset
Use YouTube VR on a supported headset
YouTube lists Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, PICO 4, and Apple Vision Pro for YouTube VR. On Quest, the app supports immersive and panel viewing; viewers can search by voice or keyboard and filter results for 360°, VR180, 4K, 3D, and captions. YouTube says the app supports 8K resolution on Quest 3 and describes up to 4K for purchased movies on Meta Quest. These are device- and content-specific capabilities, not a promise that every video is available at those resolutions. Check the app’s current supported-device list and the quality options on the video you select (YouTube: Get started with YouTube VR).
- Install YouTube VR from the headset’s app store, after confirming the headset is supported.
- Open the app and search for a video, or use its immersive-video filters.
- Choose the available quality and viewing mode. Use immersive mode for supported 360° or VR180 content; use panel mode when you want a screen-style view.
Choose the right format and player
A flat video shown on a large virtual screen is still flat video; it does not become 360° content just because it is viewed in a headset. A 360° video can surround the viewer, while stereoscopic 3D depends on the file’s format and an app that supports it. For playback outside YouTube, use a headset-compatible video app or browser that supports the particular content and format. Steam separately documents Steam 360 Video for immersive playback on SteamVR-compatible headsets (Steam Support: Streaming Videos on Steam). Bigscreen Beta is another optional Quest app whose Meta Store listing describes local video playback, including side-by-side and over-under 3D files, Windows desktop streaming, and YouTube viewing. Check the listing for current availability and details in your region (Meta Store: Bigscreen Beta on Meta Quest).

How to stream PCVR games to a headset
Use Steam Link wirelessly
Steam Link streams games in a Steam library from a Windows PC running Steam and SteamVR to supported Meta, HTC, and PICO headsets. This is for PCVR gameplay; it is not a general method for watching every online 360° video. Steam’s minimum requirements include Windows 10 or newer, a supported PC GPU, a router using a 5 GHz channel with Wi-Fi 5 minimum, and a supported headset. Steam recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E (Steam Support: Steam Link For Meta, HTC and PICO Headsets).
- On the Windows PC, sign in to Steam and make sure SteamVR is installed and ready.
- Connect the PC and headset to the same network. For wireless streaming, check that the router uses 5 GHz and meets Steam’s Wi-Fi 5 minimum; Wi-Fi 6 or 6E is Steam’s recommendation.
- Install Steam Link on the supported headset.
- Open Steam Link in the headset and follow its connection prompts to find and connect to the PC.
- Launch a supported game from the Steam library and adjust the experience if the connection is unstable or uncomfortable.
Before buying a new router, check the existing PC-to-router-to-headset arrangement and whether it meets Steam’s requirements. A router upgrade alone cannot guarantee a particular result; wireless performance and latency depend on the whole network and local conditions.

Use Meta Horizon Link when its PC-connected workflow fits
Meta documents a separate PC-connected setup using a Meta VR device and Meta Horizon Link on Windows, which can connect by USB or Wi-Fi. For the specified wired setup, Meta’s hardware guidance calls for a USB-C data cable rated for 5 GB/s or higher. This cable guidance applies to that workflow; it does not mean every Quest video or PCVR use requires a cable (Meta Horizon OS Developers: Hardware Setup).
How to cast the headset view to a TV, phone, or computer
Use consumer casting to share what you see
Casting sends the headset’s view to another display in real time. Meta describes sharing a device view to a phone, tablet, TV, or browser. The exact available destinations and controls depend on the device and current software; follow the sharing options shown on your headset and the receiving device. Casting is outward from the headset, unlike watching a video inside it (Meta Horizon OS Developers: Sharing).

Use Meta Quest Developer Hub for a desktop developer workflow
Meta Quest Developer Hub (MQDH) also documents casting to a desktop for development and recording. This is a developer tool, not the only consumer casting option. For wireless casting, Meta says the headset and desktop should share Wi-Fi and ADB over Wi-Fi should be enabled in Device Manager. MQDH provides bitrate, resolution, and frame-rate controls and can record video to headset storage. Meta’s documentation says microphone audio is not yet supported in its recording flow, so do not rely on that flow to capture your voice (Meta Horizon OS Developers: Debugging Tools).
- Install and open Meta Quest Developer Hub on the desktop used for development or recording.
- Connect the headset and desktop to the same Wi-Fi network for the wireless procedure.
- In Device Manager, enable ADB over Wi-Fi as directed by the tool.
- Open the casting controls, choose bitrate, resolution, and frame rate appropriate to the connection, then start the cast or recording.
- For recordings that need spoken commentary, use a separate audio workflow; MQDH’s documented recording flow does not support microphone audio.
How to livestream Quest gameplay to an audience
Livestreaming broadcasts the headset experience to a public or private audience platform; it is not the same as casting to a nearby screen. Meta identifies livestreaming as a device-sharing capability. BeamXR Live is one example: a Meta developer story describes it broadcasting Quest VR or mixed-reality experiences to Twitch, YouTube, and other platforms, with overlays, live chat, and clipping. That story does not establish that BeamXR is the only available app or that every feature and platform is currently available to every user. Check the app listing and supported destinations before setting up a stream (Meta Horizon OS Developers: How a Five-Person Team Built the Go-To Streaming App on Meta Quest).

Separate developer guidance from consumer guarantees
Meta’s media requirements are developer guidance for apps on Meta devices, not a universal home-network specification. Its page, updated August 28, 2026, sets a 4 Mbps minimum threshold for rectilinear 2D content; recommends 48–60 fps for immersive video; and describes 30–60 pixels per degree as a target range constrained by the device’s decoder and display. Meta also says AV1 will work on Quest 3 and above only. Do not treat the 4 Mbps figure as a guarantee that all VR video will work at that connection speed, or assume that every headset can decode every format (Meta Horizon OS Developers: Media requirements and guidelines for streaming apps).

Expect conditions to affect latency and smoothness
Meta warns developers that performance and latency vary with users’ environments. For immersive apps, handling poor connectivity matters: an experience should avoid freezing or judder and preserve consistent positional tracking where possible. A fast-looking video connection is not the only consideration for interactive VR, where latency and tracking stability affect comfort.
Meta’s Quest streaming policy requirements are specific to covered apps. The policy calls for notices about streamed content and connectivity, and says streamed content from virtual devices or cloud sources is not allowed for covered apps unless Meta expressly approves it in writing. This is not a general prohibition on consumer VR streaming services; it is a rule developers must assess for apps in scope (Meta Horizon OS Developers: Quest streaming policy).
Common VR streaming problems and fixes
- The headset app is missing or will not install: Check the app’s official supported-device list and regional listing. Do not assume support for one Quest or PICO model applies to every headset.
- A YouTube video looks flat instead of immersive: Confirm that the video is actually 360° or VR180 and select an immersive viewing mode where available. A virtual panel does not turn flat footage into 360° video.
- Steam Link cannot find the PC: Confirm Steam and SteamVR are running on the Windows PC, both devices share the same network, and the headset app is installed. Recheck Steam’s operating-system, GPU, headset, and Wi-Fi requirements.
- PCVR has stutter or unstable latency: Check whether the router is using 5 GHz and meets Steam’s Wi-Fi 5 minimum. Steam recommends Wi-Fi 6 or 6E. Also inspect the complete PC-to-router-to-headset connection; changing one device does not ensure smooth performance.
- Wireless Meta desktop casting fails: For the MQDH developer workflow, verify that desktop and headset share Wi-Fi and ADB over Wi-Fi is enabled in Device Manager.
- A recording has no voice audio: Meta says MQDH’s documented recording flow does not yet support microphone audio. Arrange separate voice capture if commentary is required.
- A broadcast destination or feature is unavailable: App support can change and may vary by platform or region. Confirm the current official listing and platform support rather than relying on a case study as a compatibility guarantee.
- Immersive video judders or freezes: Lower the selected quality if the app allows it, check the connection, and verify that the headset and app support the chosen format and codec. Meta’s developer guidance warns that performance varies by environment.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is for a different job from headset casting or PCVR: it keeps a YouTube channel live 24/7 by looping videos you upload. It does not broadcast a live camera view or stream to Twitch, Facebook, or other platforms. The setup is three steps:
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home, so your computer and internet connection do not need to keep the stream running. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
