Valve’s monthly VRS is the official roster-performance ranking used for Direct VRS Invites; HLTV publishes its own world table weekly, based on its stated mix of year-long achievements, recent form and LAN results. For Major invitations, VRS is the relevant system—not HLTV’s ranking.
What is the difference between VRS and HLTV rankings?
The central difference is their purpose. Valve defines VRS in its Tournament Operation Requirements as its official system for ranking roster performance, published monthly and used as the basis for Direct VRS Invites. HLTV’s world ranking is a separate ranking of competitive teams published by HLTV; it is not a Valve standings release.
Valve’s Major rulebook gives VRS two tournament functions: regional standings are used to sort rosters for invitations, while the global standings are used for pre-event seeding after teams have accepted invitations. HLTV’s table can help describe competitive form, but it does not determine those Valve invitations or seedings.
How often are the rankings updated?
Valve publishes VRS monthly under its tournament requirements. HLTV says its world ranking is updated weekly. As a result, HLTV’s position for a team may change between Valve VRS releases. A newer HLTV update does not supersede or revise the official VRS snapshot.

What does each ranking measure?
Valve VRS
Valve’s published requirements establish VRS as the official ranking used for Direct VRS Invites, with regional lists also used for Major invitations and the global list for post-acceptance seeding. Those requirements do not make HLTV’s stated scoring factors a description of Valve’s formula. The exact VRS sub-factor calculations are not set out here, so a more detailed formula comparison would be unsupported.

HLTV world ranking
HLTV’s methodology page says its world ranking considers teams’ achievements over the past year, with severe decay in points throughout each month; recent form over the last two months; and results at the last ten LAN events. HLTV also says past points are retained only when a three-player core remains, and that online matches and tournaments count with a diminishing factor.
These windows and continuity rules are specific to HLTV’s published methodology. They should not be read as VRS rules or converted into a claim that either system measures the other’s criteria.

Why can the same team rank differently?
- Different goals: VRS serves Valve’s invitation and seeding process, while HLTV publishes its own competitive world ranking.
- Different update schedules: HLTV updates weekly; VRS is monthly, so the rankings may reflect different points in time.
- Different stated evidence: HLTV describes a year-long achievement record, recent form and a last-ten-LAN window. Valve’s requirements establish VRS’s official role, not that same formula.
- Different roster continuity rules: Valve defines a roster as five specific athletes, regardless of their current or later association with a team organization. HLTV describes a three-player core as the condition for retaining previous ranking points.
- Different geographic views: Valve uses regional lists for invitations and a global list for seeding. Make sure you are comparing the same scope rather than a regional VRS position with a global HLTV position.
Because the systems have separate methods and purposes, their ranks—and any points they display—do not share a conversion scale. A team’s position in one cannot be translated into an equivalent position or points total in the other.
How do regions affect VRS and Major invitations?
For Major invitations, Valve’s rulebook uses regional VRS lists to sort rosters. It assigns a roster to a region according to the majority of its players. If the roster is tied, the rulebook resolves the assignment using the region with greater Major representation, ordered Europe, then Americas, then Asia.

- SUMMON THE DRAGON LORE — Engineered for elite competitive play, the Gigantus V2 Large - Counter-Strike 2 Edition is the ultimate weapon for rushing B
- TEXTURED MICRO-WEAVE CLOTH SURFACE — Optimized across all mouse sensors for pixel-precise accuracy and total tracking responsiveness, the weave’s high thread count let the mouse glide with ease across the mat for quick, fluid swipes
- THICK, HIGH-DENSITY RUBBER FOAM — At 3mm thick, the mats remain uniformly flat even over imperfect surfaces—a sturdy foundation for consistent mouse movements
- ANTI-SLIP BASE — When things get chaotic, pull off clutch plays with a stable base that’s crucial to competitive gaming
After invitations are accepted, Valve uses the global VRS for pre-event seeding. This distinction matters: an invitation comparison is regional, while that subsequent seeding uses the global list. HLTV’s world ranking is not a substitute for either VRS view.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is HLTV’s VRS ranking official?
No. HLTV’s ranking is HLTV’s own world ranking, not Valve’s VRS. Valve’s Tournament Operation Requirements call VRS its official roster-performance ranking and make it the basis for Direct VRS Invites. HLTV’s ranking may be useful as a separate view of team performance, but it does not have Valve’s official tournament role.

How to compare a team’s positions responsibly
- Identify the question. For Direct VRS Invites or Valve Major procedures, check the applicable Valve VRS list and tournament rules. For HLTV’s assessment of teams, consult HLTV’s world ranking.
- Match the scope. Check whether the VRS position is regional or global before comparing it with HLTV’s world table.
- Check the date. Note the VRS publication and the HLTV update date; their monthly and weekly cadences mean the figures may cover different snapshots.
- Track the roster, not just the organization name. Valve’s roster is defined by five athletes, while HLTV’s continuity rule refers to a three-player core.
- Keep each scale separate. Compare positions only as positions within their own systems; do not treat points or rank numbers as interchangeable.
Live placements are time-sensitive. The standings should be checked on their respective official pages for the date and event in question rather than treated as permanent values.
