vssui.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with the Volume Shadow Copy Service, so downloading a replacement from a random DLL site is usually the wrong fix. Repair Windows first, then diagnose the backup program, VSS provider, or legacy script that produced the error.

What this file actually does

The file is described internally as VSS Admin and is part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System. Microsoft documentation identifies VSSUI as the configuration user interface for Shadow Copies for Shared Folders, a feature connected to the Volume Shadow Copy Service, or VSS.

VSS creates point-in-time snapshots that Windows Backup, System Restore, and third-party backup applications can use. vssui.dll is only one Windows component involved in that environment. It is not the entire VSS subsystem and should not be confused with:

  • vssadmin.exe, the command-line administration tool
  • vssapi.dll, a VSS application programming interface component
  • swprv.dll, part of the system software provider
  • volsnap.sys, the Windows kernel storage component used by the system provider

The system VSS provider is built into Windows. Third-party backup products can also install their own VSS providers, writers, drivers, and user-mode components. That distinction matters when the error occurs only inside one backup application.

Microsoft has documented separate x86 and x64 copies of Vssui.dll in historical Windows and Windows Server releases. That does not establish one universal current version, size, or path. The correct file depends on the Windows release, edition, architecture, servicing branch, and installed updates. Not every current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation should be assumed to contain the file in the same location.

vssui.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. Installing one of those redistributables is not a proper way to obtain it.

Causes by symptom

What you see Most likely explanation Best first action
Windows Backup or System Restore reports the file missing A damaged or incomplete Windows component, or a VSS failure Install updates, then run DISM and SFC
One backup application fails while other Windows functions work A damaged backup product, VSS writer, or third-party provider Update or repair that backup application and inspect VSS
An old script runs regsvr32 vssui.dll A legacy repair procedure is being used on a newer or different Windows build Stop following the script and use current Windows repair guidance
LoadLibrary("vssui.dll") failed appears The named file may be missing, or one of its dependencies may be unavailable Repair Windows and identify the calling program
The file disappeared after an antivirus alert Quarantine or malware damage is possible Check Protection History and scan before restoring anything
The error began after a driver or software change A provider, filter driver, or system configuration may be affected Use System Restore if an appropriate restore point exists
A game or application alone reports the file The program may be invoking Windows incorrectly or have its own damaged installation Update or reinstall the program after repairing Windows

Read the error precisely

Several messages are associated with this problem:

LoadLibrary("vssui.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found.

Another form is:

The module "vssui.dll" failed to load.
Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files.
The specified module could not be found.

“Module could not be found” does not always mean that vssui.dll itself is absent. Windows can show the same wording when a dependency required by the file cannot be loaded. A missing runtime component, incompatible binary, damaged system file, or incorrect architecture can produce a similar result.

Do not respond by copying the named DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or the application folder without identifying the caller. That can create a second problem while leaving the original dependency or VSS failure untouched.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Start with Windows servicing because a failed update or incomplete component installation can leave system files inconsistent.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart when Windows requests it.
  6. Return to Settings > Windows Update and check again until no additional ordinary updates are offered.
  7. Reproduce the backup, restore, or application error.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install available updates and restart.
  6. Check again after restarting.
  7. Test the operation that originally failed.

If the error started immediately after an update, note the update and the date before removing anything. Do not uninstall updates as a first response to a missing DLL. Repair the component store first unless Windows is unable to boot or the update itself clearly caused an unusable system.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the safest general repair for a missing or damaged Windows-owned component. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as a source.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window because the percentage may pause for a while.
  3. Restart Windows when the command completes.

Run SFC

After restarting:

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
  2. Enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Test the backup, System Restore operation, or application again.

Possible SFC results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC did not find damaged protected files. The problem may be a dependency, VSS provider, backup application, or legacy script.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, check Windows Update, and use a matching Windows installation source if needed.

Microsoft’s instructions for repairing missing or corrupted system files are available through its System File Checker and DISM guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running these commands manually is useful, but repeatedly guessing which component changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC commands remain the standard Windows repair path.

If DISM cannot find repair files

DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source. If Windows Update is damaged or unavailable, DISM can require a matching installation source with the appropriate /Source and /LimitAccess options.

Do not use an arbitrary ISO or installation image from a different Windows release. The source must match the installed Windows version and architecture closely enough for servicing. If you cannot provide a matching source, repair Windows through supported installation media rather than copying an isolated DLL.

Fix 3: Check whether VSS itself is working

Once Windows files are repaired, determine whether the failure is specific to vssui.dll or belongs to the wider VSS system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:

vssadmin list providers

This lists registered VSS providers.

Then run:

vssadmin list writers

This lists VSS writers and their states.

Finally, run:

vssadmin list shadows

This lists existing shadow copies, where available.

Microsoft documents these commands in its vssadmin reference.

How to interpret the results

  • If providers and writers list normally and the writers are stable, the issue may be limited to the application that called VSS.
  • An unexpected third-party provider points toward the backup product or storage software that installed it.
  • A writer in a failed state points toward the associated Windows service or application rather than automatically proving that vssui.dll is missing.
  • A failure affecting only one backup product usually suggests that product’s VSS requester, provider, driver, or configuration.
  • Do not delete VSS registry entries or run an old “reset all VSS” batch file without understanding every command. Some legacy procedures can affect active backup jobs or existing restore points.

Microsoft explains the relationship between VSS providers and components in its Volume Shadow Copy Service overview.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the backup application

If Windows Backup and System Restore work but Veeam, Macrium, CrashPlan, NetBackup, or another backup application fails, repair the application before changing Windows manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check for an application repair option

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Select the affected backup program.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair or Reset when provided.
  7. Run the backup job again.

Some desktop applications do not expose these options. In that case:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Select the backup application.
  4. Choose Change, Repair, or the vendor’s maintenance option.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test a new backup job.

If repair is unavailable or does not help, download the current installer from the backup vendor’s official support channel, export or record the backup configuration if the product supports it, and reinstall the application. Do not remove a provider or driver manually from the registry.

An application that invokes LoadLibrary("vssui.dll") may be using an obsolete assumption about Windows. Updating the application can replace that old call with a supported VSS procedure.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine

A missing file after a security alert may have been quarantined, but absence alone does not prove malware. A damaged Windows installation, failed update, or cleanup utility can also remove or alter components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review Protection History

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Expand recent detections and review the file path, detection name, and action taken.

Do not restore vssui.dll automatically. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item can reintroduce a real threat. Only consider restoration after verifying the file’s provenance and digital signature, and only if the detection is clearly a false positive.

Run a full scan:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Scan options.
  4. Choose Full scan.
  5. Select Scan now.

If compromise is suspected or Windows Security cannot clean the system while Windows is running, use Microsoft Defender Offline. Microsoft describes quarantine decisions in its Protection History guidance and explains the offline scan in its Microsoft Defender Offline instructions.

After scanning, run DISM and SFC again. Security cleanup can leave system components incomplete, and Windows repair is safer than restoring a file from an unknown source.

Fix 6: Update a related storage or backup driver only when indicated

Driver reinstallation is appropriate when the VSS provider, storage filter, or backup product identifies a driver problem. It is not a general remedy for every vssui.dll message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories such as Storage controllers, Disk drives, and System devices.
  4. Look for a warning icon or a device associated with the backup or storage vendor.
  5. Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
  6. Review the General tab for a device status message.
  7. Review the Driver tab for the provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Update Driver only for the device implicated by the VSS or backup error.

Do not uninstall a storage controller, disk filter, or backup driver simply because its name is unfamiliar. Record the device and driver details first, and use the manufacturer’s supported package when Windows Update does not provide the correct one.

Driver hunting can involve comparing hardware IDs, checking vendor packages, and determining which of several installed drivers is actually stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing a damaged backup application or VSS provider.

Fix 7: Understand 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

A 32-bit application may require a 32-bit component even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit replacement. Windows uses separate locations for many system binaries:

  • System32 generally contains 64-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows.
  • SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows.

These names are confusing, which is why manually placing a downloaded file is unsafe. Do not install both architectures indiscriminately.

Check the calling program:

  1. Identify the application, script, service, or scheduled task that produced the message.
  2. Determine whether that program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  3. Confirm that it supports the installed Windows release.
  4. Repair or update the program using its supported installer.
  5. Let Windows servicing restore Windows components instead of choosing a folder by trial and error.

Historical Microsoft file tables show that x86 and x64 Vssui.dll entries differed across older Windows releases. Those historical examples are not a universal current version or size for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Fix 8: Treat regsvr32 vssui.dll as a legacy procedure

regsvr32 registers certain self-registering COM DLLs. It is not a universal command for repairing DLLs, and many Windows system DLLs do not expose the required DllRegisterServer entry point.

An attempted command may return:

The entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.

That result does not mean that the file should be downloaded or that Windows is missing a generic runtime.

Older Windows Server and backup documentation sometimes included:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 vssui.dll

in version-specific VSS repair procedures. Such instructions were intended for particular legacy systems and may require the executable architecture to match the DLL. They should not be applied blindly to Windows 10 or Windows 11.

If an administrator is maintaining an old Windows Server installation and has a documented procedure for that exact build, verify the architecture and source first. For modern Windows, use DISM, SFC, Windows servicing, or the current backup vendor procedure instead.

A successful regsvr32 message would only show that registration completed. It would not prove that VSS providers, writers, storage drivers, or backup jobs work correctly.

Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a driver installation, application installation, update, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs to review expected changes.
  7. Select Next, then Finish.
  8. Allow Windows to restart.
  9. Test the failed operation.

System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, and settings. It does not normally remove personal files, but applications and updates installed after the selected restore point may be affected. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.

Do not use System Restore as a substitute for checking whether a backup product has a damaged configuration. It is most useful when the timing clearly matches a system change.

Fix 10: Perform a repair reinstall when servicing remains broken

If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, or Windows has multiple system-component errors, an in-place repair may be safer than manually taking ownership of system folders and replacing files.

Before proceeding:

  1. Back up important personal files.
  2. Confirm the Windows edition and architecture.
  3. Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
  4. Ensure you have enough free storage.
  5. Use installation media that matches the installed Windows release as closely as possible.
  6. Choose the option that preserves personal files and applications when offered.

On Windows 11, some systems provide:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Recovery.
  4. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  5. Select Reinstall now, if available.
  6. Follow the prompts and restart.

Microsoft says this option can reinstall the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where the feature is available. See its Windows repair reinstall instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If that option is unavailable, use supported Windows installation media and select the appropriate in-place repair path. A repair install is preferable to copying a DLL from another computer because it repairs the component relationships and servicing metadata as well as individual files.

Never download an isolated vssui.dll

Random DLL download sites create several risks:

  • The file may contain malware or have been modified.
  • It may belong to another Windows build.
  • It may have the wrong architecture.
  • It may be missing required dependencies.
  • It may be unsigned or have an invalid signature.
  • It may make the application error disappear while VSS remains broken.
  • Copying it into a system directory can damage servicing and future updates.

The safe official sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, matching Windows installation media, supported Windows recovery features, and—on older systems—the matching Microsoft servicing package. If a third-party backup application owns the failing provider or requester, use that vendor’s current installer and repair procedure.

FAQ

Is vssui.dll a Microsoft file?

Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows and the VSS administration user interface. Its presence does not mean that every Windows release has the same file, path, version, or architecture.

Is vssui.dll a virus?

Not by identity alone. It is a legitimate Windows component, but malware can use a file with the same name. Check its location, digital signature, Windows Security history, and the result of a full scan. Do not infer malware merely because the file is missing.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

No. vssui.dll is not one of those runtime components. Repair Windows and the application that produced the error instead.

Does regsvr32 vssui.dll fix the problem?

Usually not on modern Windows. It was included in some legacy VSS procedures, but registration is not the same as repairing VSS. A successful registration does not prove that backup writers and providers work.

Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is visible?

The message can refer to a dependency of vssui.dll, not only to the named file. Architecture mismatch, damaged system components, and unavailable dependencies can produce the same wording.

Should I copy the file from another computer?

No, unless you are following a supported Microsoft recovery procedure using a verified, matching Windows source. Two computers can have different builds, editions, architectures, and servicing levels.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What if only one application reports the error?

Repair or reinstall that application, then inspect its VSS providers and writers. A single-product failure is more likely to involve the product’s requester, provider, driver, or compatibility than a universal Windows DLL failure.

When should I contact support?

Escalate when DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, VSS writers remain failed after restarting relevant services, storage health is questionable, or an in-place repair does not resolve the issue. Provide the exact error, the program that produced it, the Windows edition and architecture, recent system changes, and the output of vssadmin list providers and vssadmin list writers.
