A Vultr Cloud Compute instance sending a continuous YouTube livestream uses outbound bandwidth. Estimate its monthly transfer from the encoder’s total bitrate and stream duration, then compare that estimate with the current allowance for your exact plan and region. Vultr’s cited documentation states that outbound usage above the allocation is billed at $0.01 per GB, but the sources do not establish a universal allowance or guarantee sustained throughput for any instance. Check the live plan details and your account’s Bandwidth Usage view before you commit.
What Vultr counts toward its bandwidth limit
Vultr counts outbound internet transfer toward bandwidth usage; inbound transfer is not metered against the allowance, according to its bandwidth overage documentation. In this setup, the video and audio sent from your instance to YouTube are outbound traffic. Other outbound traffic from the instance also matters.
Bandwidth allowance is a data-volume budget, not a measure of network speed. Having enough monthly transfer does not establish that an instance can sustain your chosen bitrate or maintain a continuous connection. Vultr’s billing documents do not provide a guaranteed sustained throughput or continuous-stream uptime for a particular instance; verify the network details for the selected plan and test the actual stream.
Estimate monthly transfer from bitrate
For a continuous stream over 30 days, an approximate decimal-gigabyte estimate is:

Estimated GB = total stream bitrate in Mbps × 0.324
This unit conversion assumes the stream runs continuously for 30 days. Use the encoder’s actual total bitrate—video plus audio—not resolution alone. The examples below are estimates before protocol overhead, reconnects, concurrent backup streams, or unrelated outbound traffic.

| Total bitrate | Estimated transfer over 30 days |
|---|---|
| 6 Mbps | About 194 GB |
| 10 Mbps | About 324 GB |
| 17 Mbps | About 551 GB |
If the encoder’s stated bitrate already includes audio, do not add audio a second time. Add a practical margin for overhead, restarts, any backup encoder that transmits simultaneously, and other workloads on the instance. A failover encoder that is idle until needed should not be counted as concurrent traffic unless it is actually sending data.
Choose a bitrate that fits the stream and connection
YouTube’s official encoder recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. For AV1 or H.265, the corresponding recommendations are 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees about Vultr network performance; see YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

YouTube also advises leaving 20% spare upload capacity. Its guidance says, “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” Account for the stream’s total bitrate and any other traffic sharing the connection, including a backup stream if it sends at the same time. For a Vultr instance, confirm the applicable network details and test the route to YouTube ingest rather than treating the monthly data allowance as evidence of sufficient speed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
What Vultr’s published allowance and overage terms say
Vultr’s documentation updated December 16, 2025 describes a 2 TB free bandwidth allocation per account per month, resetting each calendar month without carryover, alongside allocations associated with instances. It describes instance allocations accruing hourly and uses 672 hours per month for billing-allocation calculations; that convention is not the actual length of every calendar month. The documentation does not establish the allowance for every current plan and region, or confirm whether allocations pool in the way a particular account holder expects. Confirm the current terms for your account and selected plan in Vultr’s bandwidth-cap documentation and console.

The same date-stamped documentation states an overage rate of $0.01 per GB for outbound bandwidth above a plan’s allocated quota. Vultr’s overage-rate page phrases it this way: “Bandwidth usage exceeding your plan’s allocated quota is billed at an overage rate of $0.01 per GB.” Treat the amount as a published term in that documentation, not an immutable price; verify the rate and billing rules currently applicable to your account.

- Identify the exact instance and region. Look up its current outbound transfer allocation and any applicable account-level allocation in Vultr’s live plan details. Do not substitute a different region’s or plan’s allowance.
- Calculate the stream’s expected monthly transfer. Multiply the total encoder bitrate in Mbps by 0.324 for a 30-day continuous run, then add a margin for overhead and other outbound workloads.
- Check the account’s current usage. Open Vultr’s console and review the Bandwidth Usage view. Compare observed usage with the current allowance and billing period.
- Test throughput and stream stability separately. Confirm that the instance sustains the selected bitrate to YouTube ingest, and monitor the stream. A transfer allowance alone cannot answer either question.
- Recheck after changes. Recalculate if you raise the bitrate, add another stream or workload, enable a transmitting backup, or change the instance or region.
