There is no evidence-based universal winner. Vultr is the clearer starting point if you want a provider-documented OBS/Broadcaster workflow for a 24/7 stream. Hetzner can be a better fit if the Cloud location and outbound-traffic allowance for your chosen plan suit your audience and quoted price. In either case, choose by the stream’s actual outbound bitrate, where YouTube ingest is reachable, and whether the server only forwards video or must encode it—not by a provider’s marketing guide or SLA alone.
Vultr vs Hetzner: the practical differences
| Decision factor | Vultr | Hetzner |
|---|---|---|
| Documented streaming path | Vultr documents an OBS-based Broadcaster marketplace app and guidance for running a 24/7 stream from uploaded source files. This documents a workflow, not tested reliability for a specific instance. | The cited Hetzner material establishes traffic terms, locations and Cloud service-agreement language; it does not document an equivalent 24/7 YouTube setup. |
| Outbound traffic | Outbound transfer counts toward bandwidth allocations; inbound traffic does not. The documented overage rate is $0.01 per GB beyond the plan allocation. Confirm the allocation and region-specific price for the instance you select. | Included Cloud traffic depends on product and network zone. EU, US and Singapore allowances differ; check the exact model and zone, including any applicable overage terms. |
| Location choice | Check the current region list and quote: Vultr says some product prices vary by location. | Hetzner lists six Cloud locations across four network zones. Traffic between different zones is billed as normal internet traffic. |
| Encoding workload | Vultr identifies dedicated-CPU Optimized Cloud Compute as a use case for video transcoding. That is not proof that a particular plan can encode a particular stream. | The cited evidence does not establish which Cloud plan can encode or transcode a given resolution and frame rate. Test the intended workload on the exact plan. |
| Availability terms | No directly comparable availability commitment for this specific workload is established by the cited material. | The Cloud service agreement states a 99.9% monthly availability objective for Cloud servers, subject to its scope and exclusions. This is contractual language, not a promise of uninterrupted video delivery. |
Vultr’s Optimized Cloud Compute documentation describes dedicated virtual machines for demanding applications, including video transcoding (Vultr provisioning guide). Neither that statement nor Vultr’s streaming guide is an independent benchmark of a particular plan. Hetzner’s published terms likewise need to be checked against the Cloud model and zone you would actually order (Hetzner traffic table; Hetzner Cloud locations).
Estimate monthly egress before choosing a plan
A continuous stream sends data from the server to YouTube for the full time it is live. For a first-pass estimate, multiply the outgoing bitrate by the seconds in the billing period, then convert bits to bytes. At decimal units, 1 Mbps sustained for 30 days is about 0.324 TB. A 10 Mbps stream is therefore about 3.24 TB per 30 days, before audio and protocol overhead or operational variation. This is arithmetic, not a provider quote.
Use the stream’s actual encoded bitrate, add a margin, and compare the result with the allowance for the exact product and location. Do not treat a Hetzner dedicated root-server traffic figure as a Cloud VM allowance: Hetzner documents those separately. Vultr measures bandwidth on outbound transfer and documents an overage charge of $0.01 per GB after the included allocation. Confirm the live allocation and price in the provider’s current console or calculator; Vultr notes that some product pricing varies by data-center location (Vultr bandwidth measurement; Vultr overage policy; Vultr location pricing; Hetzner Cloud billing FAQ).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a region and workload that match the stream
Place the server for the path to YouTube
Consider where your audience is, which YouTube ingest point your stream uses, and the provider locations available to you. A nearby server may reduce network distance, but location alone does not prove a better YouTube ingest route. The cited provider material contains no direct, head-to-head YouTube ingest benchmark. Test from the candidate location rather than assuming one provider’s region will perform better.
Distinguish forwarding from encoding
A server that sends an already encoded file or feed has a different CPU workload from one that encodes or transcodes video. If the server only forwards a pre-encoded stream, verify that the source, process and network can sustain the chosen output. If it encodes or transcodes, test the precise resolution, frame rate, codec and other concurrent work on the exact instance class before committing to continuous operation. A provider’s general compute description does not establish that a smaller shared-CPU VM can encode your target stream.

Set YouTube’s encoder parameters from its current guidance
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate rather than carrying over a generic OBS bitrate recommendation. The retrieved YouTube table, as of 2026-10-03, lists H.264 recommendations of 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. Those examples are specific to H.264 and those formats; look up the applicable row for your own selection in YouTube’s live encoder settings guide.
- Use CBR and set the keyframe frequency to 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- The guide lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 and AV1 options, up to 60 fps. Choose a supported combination and confirm your encoder and workflow can produce it.
- Test with representative motion and audio before relying on the stream. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.
Operate the stream as a service, not just a VM
A cloud instance can remain powered on while the streaming process has stopped. Plan how the stream starts, how it recovers, and how you will learn that it is down. These operational recommendations are not a tested failover setup.

- Use process supervision or an equivalent restart arrangement so an unexpected encoder or player exit does not leave the VM idle indefinitely.
- Keep source files on persistent storage and confirm that they remain available after a reboot or process restart.
- Monitor the process and YouTube stream health; alert on both unexpected process exits and sustained bandwidth or transfer changes.
- Store the YouTube stream key as a secret, restrict access to it, and do not expose it in logs, scripts shared publicly or screenshots. Rotate it if it is disclosed.
- Write down and test a recovery procedure, including how to restart the sender, verify the correct source and key, and confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Which should you choose?
- Start with Vultr if having a directly documented OBS/Broadcaster workflow matters. Its documentation is a useful setup path, not proof that any particular plan will run your stream reliably.
- Consider Hetzner if a nearby Cloud location offers enough included outbound traffic at the live quoted price for your workload. Compare Cloud terms for the exact zone and model, not a separate dedicated-server allowance.
- Test before scaling either option if the VM will encode or transcode, or if a dropped stream would have significant consequences. A short representative test cannot establish long-term reliability, but it can reveal an obvious capacity or configuration mismatch.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is another way to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
