“Failed: Unknown Error” is a generic message, not a diagnosis. First open the newest failed-run log and identify the last useful error; then match the fix to that detail. Also check that Wabbajack and the modlist are in new folders near a drive’s root rather than protected Windows locations.
1. Find the log from the failed attempt
- Open the folder where Wabbajack is installed.
- Open the subfolder for the Wabbajack version you used, then open its
logsfolder. - Sort by date and open the newest log created by the failed attempt.
- Read the final entries. If the run failed while downloading, the log may list failed download links near the end.
Wabbajack’s Troubleshooting FAQ is the official guide for interpreting several common failure details. The generic message alone does not establish whether the problem was a path, a missing file, a download, or something else.
2. Check the folder locations
Windows applies extra restrictions to certain standard folders, including Desktop, Documents, Downloads, OneDrive, and Program Files. Wabbajack’s FAQ calls these “protected folders” and warns they can interfere with operation.
Move the Wabbajack executable and the modlist installation to new folders near the drive’s root. The FAQ gives C:Wabbajack for the executable and C:modlistsmy-new-modlist for a modlist as examples. The key is avoiding protected locations; simply choosing any folder on C: is not a guarantee.

3. Match a download failure to the log
One or a few files failed
Use the failed links listed in the log to identify the specific files. Remove incomplete copies of those downloads before retrying, so Wabbajack does not reuse a partial file. If the log indicates a particular file is unavailable, check whether it still exists at its original source; do not assume every download error has the same remedy.
Every Nexus download failed
If the log shows all Nexus downloads failing, Wabbajack’s FAQ recommends logging out of Nexus and signing back in, then retrying.

Many unrelated downloads failed
For widespread download failures, the FAQ discusses changing the Nexus CDN location or reducing the number of simultaneous download threads. Use these options only when the log points to broad download trouble; changing them will not fix an unavailable mod file or a protected-folder problem.
4. Check whether a required mod file is still available
A file may have been removed, archived, or placed under moderation, making it unavailable to download. If the log identifies a required file that is no longer available, the modlist may remain impossible to install until its author recompiles the list without that file. Whether a manual download is possible depends on the file and the instructions in the log.

5. If the log does not make the cause clear
Ask for help in an appropriate Wabbajack or modlist support channel and include the relevant log details. Do not share account credentials or private tokens. If the same generic message appears again, the log is still the useful evidence; the message itself does not point to a universal remedy.
A 2021 user report describes the same message alongside an HTTP 404 while fetching a Wabbajack mirror definition and a failed archive download. That is one example of a download-related failure, not evidence that all unknown errors are downloads: the report.
