Waffle is a Wordle-inspired word puzzle, but it plays differently: the letters are already on a grid, and you swap them into place to complete intersecting words. In the standard game at wafflegame.net, you have up to 15 swaps; a perfect solution can take as few as 10.
How do you play Waffle Wordle?
Arrange the letters on the waffle-shaped grid so each horizontal and vertical word is correct. Instead of entering a new guess on each turn, you swap two letters already on the board. A letter at an intersection can affect both a row and a column, so check both words before committing a move.
- Open the standard daily puzzle at wafflegame.net.
- Read the tile colors to see which letters are in the right places and which belong elsewhere.
- Drag letters to swap their positions; letters may be moved anywhere on the board.
- Continue until the across and down words are correct, keeping within the displayed swap limit.
The official support page’s instruction is: “Solve the WAFFLE in 15 swaps or fewer.” Waffle’s official support page also says a standard Waffle can be solved in a minimum of 10 swaps.
What are the rules for Waffle?
Swaps and stars
The standard official puzzle allows up to 15 swaps. Once solved, the official game awards one star for each swap left over. That makes a lower-swap solution more rewarding, but solving within the limit is the main objective.

What do the colors mean in Waffle?
- Green: The letter is in the correct position.
- Yellow-style highlights: The letter belongs in a relevant word but is in a different position.
Because words cross, a tile may be relevant to either its row or its column. Corner letters can therefore be ambiguous. Repeated letters add another wrinkle: the official help examples caution that a highlighted duplicate does not necessarily mean that particular tile is the one needed to satisfy the word. Reassess the feedback as other positions are resolved rather than treating every highlight as a one-to-one clue.

- Preserve green anchors. Treat correctly placed letters as fixed while you consider words around them.
- Build likely patterns. Use common prefixes, suffixes, and letter pairs to narrow down possible words.
- Check both directions. Before swapping, ask what the move does to the horizontal and vertical words that use those tiles.
- Use clearer edges first. Work from edges and corners toward the center when those positions give you stronger constraints.
- Recheck duplicates. Repeated letters can make color feedback less obvious; revisit their roles as the surrounding words become clearer.

Where can you play Waffle?
“Waffle” is used for a family of similar online puzzles, not one universal ruleset. The original game identifies creator “jessian” and says “Mrs Waffle” named it; the available sources do not establish a connection to The New York Times or make Waffle an official NYT game.

- Waffles of Fun: This family scoop up game is high energy, competitive fun for ages 8 and up.
- How to Play: Don your blindfold and bravely wield that spatula. When the timer starts, you and an opponent race to scoop up your designated breakfast pastry (either waffles or pancake cards). When time is up, count up how many you successfully scooped -- you get a point for each one that matches your team, but your opponent will get a point for each one of THEIRS that you picked up. Look out for power up pancake cards, too -- these hold special powers that can either award extra points or take them away!

For the original game’s local reset option, check its settings: choosing local midnight may change when you receive a new puzzle depending on your time zone. The variants listed on the original site are distinct from the standard letter puzzle. Number Waffle uses numbers 1 to 7 in every row and column and has a 20-swap limit; do not apply that limit to the standard game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How is Waffle different from Wordle?
Both are Wordle-inspired daily word puzzles, but the central action differs. In Wordle, players submit word guesses; in Waffle, the letters are visible on the board and the task is to swap them into correct positions across intersecting words. The name “Waffle” is also used by separate implementations, so features such as hints, undo, replay, and puzzle limits depend on the provider.
