War Commander: Rogue Assault launched on iPhone, iPad and Android on December 21, 2016, after almost three years of development and extensive prototype testing. Kixeye’s mobile strategy game combined a 100-plus-mission campaign with base building, player-versus-player attacks, alliances and a distinctive system for directly redirecting individual units during battles.
What made the launch unusual
War Commander: Rogue Assault was designed as a free-to-play, real-time strategy game for mobile devices, but it aimed at the feel of a PC-style 3D strategy title rather than a menu-driven base game. Players constructed and defended a headquarters, assembled forces, attacked rival bases and controlled units while the battle was in progress.
The game’s launch coverage appeared on December 22, but platform release records identify December 21, 2016, as the release date for iPhone, iPad and Android. MobyGames’ release record documents those platform dates.
Nearly three years of iteration
Kixeye worked on the project for almost three years. According to GamesBeat’s launch account, approximately 2.5 years were spent testing prototypes in smaller markets, repeating design changes and using focus groups before the global release.

The effort was large by the studio’s earlier standards: roughly 50 people reportedly worked on the game for an extended period, compared with the 12–15-person teams associated with Louis Castle’s earlier PC real-time strategy projects.
Louis Castle’s role
Louis Castle, co-founder of Westwood Studios and co-creator of the original Command & Conquer series, did not create the game from the beginning. Kixeye CEO Will Harbin first asked him to review the project. Castle joined as a consultant in 2014 to help reshape its art direction and later became creative director. A contemporary preview from CGMagazine describes that transition.
How the launch version played
Base building and headquarters attacks
Players built a base, installed defenses and deployed armies against other players. In the principal attack objective described at launch, destroying the opposing headquarters determined success. Alliances added a social layer to the competitive game.
Direct control instead of fire-and-forget deployment
Units could act on their own, but players could tap an individual unit and then tap a destination or target to redirect it. That intervention was the game’s central difference from mobile strategy systems in which a player deploys troops and waits for automated combat to finish.

A campaign of more than 100 missions
The single-player component contained more than 100 missions, giving players a structured route through the game alongside multiplayer base attacks.
War Zone multiplayer
The launch design also included a War Zone concept in which multiple players could participate in the same battle. It supported cooperative player-versus-environment encounters as well as the broader multiplayer experience.
Construction speed and monetization
Kixeye emphasized immediate construction rather than the multi-hour or multi-day timers common in many mobile base-building games. Unit production and repairs were likewise described as taking no more than a few seconds at launch.
That did not mean the game was free of monetization. Players could buy items that accelerated progress. Castle said Kixeye did not intend purchases to directly buy victory, but the game still launched as a free-to-play title with in-app purchases. The current store listing also includes paid Basic, Elite and Legendary subscription tiers.

3D graphics and device compatibility
Kixeye marketed fully 3D visuals intended to approach the presentation of a PC real-time strategy game. Castle acknowledged that older phones might not run the game well, so the team created four graphics tiers to broaden compatibility.
Device support remains a practical concern. The official support center has separate troubleshooting guidance for “Device not compatible” errors on Google Play and the App Store, and warns that an unlisted device may run the game without optimal performance. Consult the War Commander: Rogue Assault support center before installing on an unsupported handset or tablet.
Where the game stands now
The game remains listed on both major mobile storefronts. Google Play currently lists Android and Windows availability, with Windows described as powered by Intel technology. The U.S. App Store listing supports iPhone and iPad and says the app is not verified for macOS.
Store metadata is changeable, but the currently indexed Google Play listing reports more than 10 million downloads, about 201,000 reviews, a 4.0 rating and an update dated June 16, 2026. Those figures are storefront information rather than permanent specifications.

The branding and storefront history are complicated. Kixeye was acquired by Stillfront Group in June 2019. Current Google Play and App Store pages still identify KIXEYE or KIXEYE Canada Ltd. as developer or seller, while the current terms of use name Imperia Online JSC of Sofia, Bulgaria, as the service provider and say Imperia Online develops and updates the game. The safest description is that this remains a Kixeye-branded title whose current legal and support operation is documented through Imperia Online.

Protect a base before reinstalling
Progress recovery is not automatic. The official account-recovery guidance says a base may be recoverable only if it was previously linked to Facebook, Game Center on iOS or Google on Android. Deleting an account does not restore a lost base. Link the base before reinstalling or changing devices.
Be careful when two bases appear
If the currently displayed base is linked to the same recovery service used by an older base, the game may ask which base to keep. The support article warns that the base not selected will be lost, so do not choose casually.
Contact support in the app
- Log in to the game.
- Tap the avatar near the top-left.
- Tap ACCOUNT.
- Under Tickets, tap SUPPORT.

Performance checks
- Use a stable connection with at least 6 Mbps bandwidth.
- Update the app before attempting a reinstall.
- Check whether the device meets the store’s compatibility requirements.
- Link the account to a recovery platform before deleting the app.
Weak Wi‑Fi, unstable connectivity, outdated game data and device limitations can all contribute to performance problems. Reinstalling without a linked recovery account can put locally saved progress at risk.
Do not confuse the two War Commander games
The browser game War Commander and the mobile game War Commander: Rogue Assault are separate titles. Progress cannot be transferred between them.
Why the launch still matters
War Commander: Rogue Assault was an ambitious attempt to compress PC-style real-time battlefield control, a substantial campaign and persistent base warfare into a phone game. Its long prototype period, four-tier graphics strategy and direct unit commands show how deliberately Kixeye pursued that goal. The result was not a pure single-player campaign or a pure PvP product, but a hybrid built around fast construction, live tactical intervention and ongoing multiplayer competition.
