War Thunder Infantry is a standalone mode that puts player-controlled soldiers into battles alongside ground vehicles and helicopters. Gaijin announced it as closed-beta content in the Line of Contact update, and its later announcements describe staged testing—not a confirmed general-release date. The details have changed between phases, so player counts, maps and mechanics below are tied to their announcement dates rather than presented as permanent live features.
What is War Thunder Infantry?
Infantry is a separate game mode within War Thunder, built around soldiers fighting alongside the game’s vehicles and helicopters. Gaijin introduced it as closed-beta content in its December 4, 2025 announcement. Official updates through July 2026 continued to describe tests in stages; they did not announce when the mode would leave closed beta.
How the test phases changed
Gaijin’s announcements describe evolving test plans, not one fixed ruleset. The following features are phase-specific and may be revised.
Initial test plan: December 2025
The initial plan described Arcade and Realistic battles, modern equipment, and US and USSR/Russia lineups. The first detailed location was Granitograd, with three Domination objectives: a motor pool building, a school and a shopping mall. Gaijin described multi-level buildings and rooftops for infantry, while vehicles could create routes through fences and debris. These were features of the initial planned setting, not confirmation that later tests used the same map or setup. See the December 5, 2025 development blog.

Second phase: March 2026
In its March 23, 2026 development blog, Gaijin described Domination sessions at two scales: 64 versus 64 (128 players total) and 20 versus 20 (40 players total). The smaller format used one capture point when the larger format was inactive. The post said solo players would be placed into squads automatically and bots would fill vacancies if there were not enough human players.
The same announcement described four classes—Assault Soldier, Sniper, Specialist and Machine Gunner—along with the Al-Massa map, squad spawning and a cap of ten ground vehicles per team at a time. These were second-phase details, not a guarantee that every later phase retained them.

Stability caveat: April 2026
On April 29, Gaijin said technical limitations had kept the team from sustaining 64-versus-64 play for an extended period without bots during the March phase. It planned to raise server load gradually while testing optimizations. That makes 128 players a tested or planned capacity, not proof that the format was continuously available or that it would perform reliably in every session. The April 29 forum update also said mouse sensitivity could be adjusted separately for infantry combat.
Third phase: July 2026
Gaijin’s July 8, 2026 phase announcement described testing on Kivu in a five-point mission mode, with a 64-versus-64 format planned. The post also covered transport for moving soldiers, respawn mechanics under test, and changes to class loadouts, markers and grenade throws. These remain phase-specific announced features, rather than evidence of a finalized public ruleset.

Is there a War Thunder Infantry release date?
No confirmed general-release date appears in the cited phase announcements. The latest one, from July 8, 2026, discusses a third test phase and mechanics still being tested; it does not say when closed beta will end. Treat claims of a specific launch date as unconfirmed unless Gaijin announces one directly.

- Check the date and phase: maps, objectives and mechanics can change from one test to another.
- Separate format from availability: an announced 64-versus-64 session is not evidence that this scale was continuously playable.
- Distinguish the rulesets: Arcade and Realistic were described in the initial plan; later phase posts discuss different maps and formats.
- Read plans as plans: a feature announced for a test is not necessarily a permanent feature or a general-release commitment.
