Wargroove 2 is worth playing if you want more approachable, turn-based tactics built around the original game’s formula. Reviews praise its strategic depth, colorful presentation, campaigns, Conquest mode, multiplayer, and creation tools. The main reservation is that it feels like a polished expansion rather than a major reinvention—good news for fans of the first game, less compelling for players who want a genuinely different sequel.
What do Wargroove 2 reviews say?
The available critic and player snapshots tell different stories. Metacritic’s Nintendo Switch page showed an 85 Metascore from 13 critic reviews, all categorized positive when accessed in 2026; Metacritic labels that result “Generally Favorable.” Steam showed 69% positive from 407 user reviews when accessed in 2026, which Steam labels “Mixed.” The first figure reflects the Switch critic sample on Metacritic; the second is a changeable Steam user-review snapshot, not a critic score.

Review excerpts praise tactical depth, the attractive presentation, campaign variety, Conquest, multiplayer, and the substantial editors. Reservations include the sequel’s similarity to Wargroove and, in one review, a desire for more distinction between factions. Those are individual criticisms, not a consensus that the game fails to evolve.
Nintendo Life summed up the familiar-but-refined approach in its September 27, 2023 review: “It doesn’t change much from the previous game; it just tightens up some of the existing mechanics and adds a couple of extra wrinkles to an already great formula.” Gfinity’s September 28, 2023 review called it “a challenging love letter to strategy RPGs that have inspired decades of gaming.”

What’s new compared with the first Wargroove?
Wargroove 2 builds on the original’s turn-based tactics with more ways to play and create. The official feature listing describes three interwoven campaigns, new Commanders with tiered Groove abilities, five new unit types, night battles, and unit upgrades through items. It also includes local and online multiplayer for up to four players, plus expanded map, campaign, and cutscene editors.
The story returns to Aurania three years after the conflict in the first game. Steam’s synopsis describes a foreign faction uncovering dangerous technology, while the official announcement identifies the Faahri Republic among the new factions.

Conquest adds a different solo challenge
Conquest is the clearest addition for players who mainly play alone. Steam describes it as a roguelike single-player mode: choices are permanent, and gold and health carry between skirmishes. That structure gives the mode a different rhythm from the campaigns, where the appeal is following a longer story across linked battles.
Editors and multiplayer extend the package
Local and online matches support up to four players, while the expanded editors let players build maps, campaigns, and cutscenes. These tools are a substantial part of the game’s appeal for people who want content beyond the authored campaigns, though the cited sources do not establish how much player-created content is available or active.

- Relic Expedition Cycle – Throughout their journey in the kingdom of Norgan, the Arisen must unearth and appraise forgotten relics to unlock powerful new weapons and skills.
- New Dungeon Challenges – The 12 freshly uncovered Lost Rites dungeons house trials designed by the Pathfinder to sharpen the Arisen’s skills and recover rare equipment once held by past Arisen that now lay dormant.
- Deeper Character Customization – New tattoo and hair options have been added to the already robust character creation tool in Dragon’s Dogma 2 so Arisen and Pawns can have even deeper personalization.
- Now on Nintendo Switch 2 – Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen brings the classic fantasy world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 and the Dark Arisen Expansion to the Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time.
- Pre-order Bonuses – The Norgan Fashion Set - Northern Attire will be available as a pre-order bonus, which can be accessed via in-game storage at launch.
Is Wargroove 2 better than the first game?
It is a broader package, but “better” depends on what you want from a sequel. The additional campaigns, Conquest, units, Commanders, multiplayer options, and creation tools give players more variety. The underlying formula remains recognizable, which can make Wargroove 2 a comfortable return for fans but a modest step forward for anyone hoping for a radical redesign.
- Choose Wargroove 2 if you want more of the original’s tactical play, with new solo and multiplayer options.
- Temper expectations if novelty is your priority: some reviews describe the sequel as safe or very familiar.
- Consider faction variety if distinct faction identities are especially important to you; at least one review excerpt wanted greater differences between them.
Is Wargroove 2 like Advance Wars?
Yes, it is discussed in the context of Advance Wars-style tactics, but that comparison does not describe the whole game. Wargroove 2 has a fantasy setting, Commander Groove abilities, a Conquest mode, three interwoven campaigns, and tools for making custom content. Review excerpts include favorable comparisons as well as a reservation that its debt to Advance Wars remains visible. It is better understood as a game in that turn-based tactics tradition with its own features than as simply a clone.

Where can you play Wargroove 2?
The original PC and Nintendo Switch release was October 5, 2023. Chucklefish later released a Pocket Edition for iOS and Android on July 30, 2025, and describes it as cross-play compatible with PC and console. In a January 29, 2026 update announcement, Chucklefish said an update was rolling out to Nintendo Switch, Xbox, Steam, iOS, and Android, with gameplay parity across those versions and fixes and improvements to mobile crossplay. That announcement confirms those platforms in the stated update context; it should not be read as a guarantee about future updates.
Chucklefish also confirmed a combined Wargroove 1 + 2 physical launch for Nintendo Switch. The announcement does not establish whether a particular retailer still has stock, so check the edition, region, and availability before buying.
