Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters is a single-player, turn-based tactical RPG about commanding a customizable Grey Knights squad against a spreading plague. Its appeal is the mix of squad tactics, precision attacks and campaign decisions, wrapped in a strongly 40K-styled presentation. Published reviews generally praise the combat and atmosphere, but also flag difficulty spikes, balance or technical problems, and repetition—so it is a better fit for players who welcome demanding tactical battles than for anyone seeking a brisk, forgiving campaign.
What kind of game is Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters?
Released for Windows on May 5, 2022, Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters was developed by Complex Games and published under Frontier Foundry. Epic Games Store describes it as a single-player, turn-based tactical RPG in which you lead the Grey Knights against the Bloom, a galaxy-spanning plague. Epic’s product listing outlines both the campaign-management layer and the battles themselves.
Between missions, you improve your base, research, choose where to deploy, and develop Grey Knights through classes, equipment and abilities. In combat, your squad uses skills and psychic powers alongside ranged and melee attacks. The game’s advertised precision-targeting system lets you select particular shots or melee attacks, while destructible objects, vehicles and environmental hazards can affect the battlefield. The Bloom also changes environments and gives enemies new attacks and abilities, according to the official product description.
That combination gives the game two connected tests: building a squad and making campaign choices that prepare it for the next fight, then using its tools efficiently under pressure. The setting is more than a visual layer: the Grey Knights, their powers and their enemies shape the abilities and tactical choices the game puts at the center.

What do reviews say?
Metacritic’s page, checked on October 8, 2026, showed an 81 Metascore from 37 critic reviews and a 7.0 user score from 98 user ratings. Its displayed critic breakdown for those 37 reviews listed 33 positive, four mixed and zero negative. The site’s broader critic index showed 41 reviews overall, a different count from the 37-review score breakdown. These are snapshots of a changing aggregator, not permanent scores. See Metacritic’s game page for its current figures.
Positive assessments tend to highlight the tactical combat, 40K identity and presentation. Metacritic quotes PC Gamer’s May 4, 2022 review calling it “A layered and engaging space opera that triumphs both on and off the battlefield.” That is PC Gamer’s verdict as reproduced by Metacritic, not an official description of the game.
Other reviews offer more caution. A Games Machine excerpt on Metacritic raised technical issues, balance, AI and repetitive missions; Wccftech praised the distinct tactical approach but warned of difficulty spikes. One user-review excerpt criticized repetitive music and maps as well as slow pacing. These are specific reviewers’ assessments, not proof that every player will encounter the same problems.
Is Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters like XCOM?
It shares the broad appeal of squad-based, turn-based tactics: position a team, use specialized abilities and try to win difficult encounters with careful decisions. PC Gamer’s 2026 Warhammer-games ranking also describes its tactical structure as XCOM 2-like, while noting lengthy missions and some repetitive mission design. But reducing Daemonhunters to “XCOM with a 40K skin” misses its emphasis on precision targeting, psychic powers, melee options, the Bloom’s changing threats and campaign management. The useful comparison is whether you enjoy tactical squad-building and can tolerate long, punishing battles—not whether the two games are identical.

Who is likely to enjoy it—and who may not?
- A strong fit: players who want turn-based squad tactics, character specialization, equipment choices and a campaign layer between battles.
- Especially appealing: Warhammer 40,000 fans drawn to the Grey Knights, the Bloom, and a presentation built around that setting.
- Think twice: players who dislike difficulty spikes, lengthy encounters or the possibility that missions and other elements may feel repetitive.
- Hard to recommend on the available evidence: anyone choosing primarily for proven technical smoothness or highly consistent balance; published criticism includes concerns in both areas, and this article does not claim independent testing.
