There is no evidence-backed universal “best build” for Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader: the right choice depends on the role you want, your character’s starting archetype, later progression, and which DLC you own. Use the archetype framework to choose a direction, then check that advice against the game version and your party’s needs.
How builds work in Rogue Trader
Archetypes are the game’s class-like progression system. They shape character growth, characteristics, skills, and abilities, so a build is a progression path rather than just a weapon choice. The first archetype also affects which Tier 2 options become available.
| Progression tier | Levels | What it means for a build |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | 1–15 | Your starting archetype establishes the character’s early role and Tier 2 options. |
| Tier 2 | 16–35 | You choose a specialization that develops the character’s role in a more specific direction. |
| Tier 3: Exemplar | 36–55 | All characters enter Exemplar progression. |
These level ranges and archetype summaries come from the unofficial, community-maintained archetype guide, which warns that it is a work in progress and may contain errors.

What Tier 2 paths specialize in
Tier 2 is where a broad role gains a more defined combat identity. The community archetype guide summarizes several options as follows:
| Tier 2 archetype | General direction |
|---|---|
| Arch-Militant | Alternates attack types. |
| Assassin | Prioritizes targets through sniper or melee approaches. |
| Bounty Hunter | Marks prey, gains extra actions, and debuffs armor. |
| Executioner | Focuses on damage over time. |
| Grand Strategist | Uses combat zones and strategems. |
| Master Tactician | Builds around momentum and tactical advantage. |
| Overseer | Builds around a familiar. |
| Vanguard | Emphasizes melee defense and counterattacks. |
These descriptions help narrow a direction, but do not establish which path performs best at a given difficulty or level.

Plan around DLC when choosing a build
DLC can change the options available. Owlcat’s Lex Imperialis feature describes the Overseer familiar system and Arbites-origin synergies; the community archetype guide also documents Bladedancer and Executioner as additions from Void Shadows.
Overseer and familiar choices
Overseer is not one fixed pet build. Owlcat describes different familiar routes tied to character origins and archetypes:
- Arbites can use a cyber-mastiff.
- Psykers can use a psyber-raven.
- Officer and Operative routes can use a cyber-eagle or servo-skull swarm.
Familiars have commands and abilities of their own, while protocols provide additional customization. The familiar choice and the character’s role therefore both matter when planning an Overseer.
Arbites specialties
Owlcat describes three different directions for Arbites characters:

The community wiki reports the main game version as 1.6.0 and its latest update as 1.6.1.514, released July 20, 2026. Its main page is unofficial, was last edited September 7, 2026, and cautions that coverage may be incomplete or incorrect. For volatile mechanics, use it as an index and cross-check against Owlcat’s official notes.
A practical way to choose and assess a build
- Pick the combat job. Decide whether the character should deal damage, support allies, control or debuff enemies, or absorb pressure.
- Check the progression path. Confirm that the Tier 1 archetype opens the Tier 2 specialization you want.
- Account for dependencies. Check whether the concept relies on a particular weapon, familiar, origin, or DLC before committing.
- Match it to the party. Consider how the build complements the other characters rather than judging it in isolation.
- Check the version and scope of advice. A role summary is not a tested, difficulty-specific talent plan; be cautious with older recommendations after a major patch.
The available evidence does not establish full level-by-level companion builds, verified talent-by-talent optimizations, or a difficulty-specific ranking. Treat any detailed optimization beyond these broad mechanics as a recommendation to evaluate against your own game version and goals.
