There is no defensible single “best” Warhammer 40,000 faction for 10th edition today. The game has moved on to 11th edition, and the available 10th-edition evidence is either an early 2024 balance snapshot or results from one 2026 tournament. Both can inform a historical comparison, but neither supports a current, edition-wide tier list. If you are choosing an army to play now, check the latest rules and points first; if you are looking back at 10th, judge factions by more than win rate alone.
Is this still a current 10th-edition recommendation?
No. GamesRadar reported in July 2026 that 11th edition had begun, while noting that 10th-edition codexes remained usable amid significant game changes. That makes a 10th-edition “best faction” list a retrospective, not a guide to the strongest army in current play. For current rules, FAQs and errata, use Warhammer Community’s Warhammer 40,000 downloads. Its Munitorum Field Manual page identifies points and leader-attachment information; the page showed an update dated 30 September 2026.

What the 10th-edition evidence actually says
The February 2024 balance snapshot
In a 22 February 2024 Metawatch discussion, Warhammer Community said it preferred a 45–55% win-rate range. It reported that Aeldari and Chaos Space Marines appeared to be moving toward that band after a balance update, while players were still finding success with them. That was an observation about the early effect of that update—not a final ranking of 10th edition, and not a current balance target verified for 11th edition. The same article named event winners from ten factions in that early period, which demonstrates variety in event results, not that all ten were equally strong over the edition.

One 2026 tournament weekend
At the 2026 Scottish Tabletop Championships (SCO), Chaos Daemons recorded a 67% win rate across 33 games, while Blood Angels recorded 33% across 36 games among armies with at least four players. Those numbers describe that event’s participants and matchups only. They are not reliable estimates of either faction’s performance across all 10th-edition events, much less evidence about 11th edition.
Rank #2
- Games Workshop - Warhammer 40,000 - Space Marines: Primaris Intercessors
The event figures are reported in Smite Club 40K’s SCO 2026 tournament report. A tournament report is useful as a snapshot, but a small event-specific sample should not be treated as a universal verdict.
How to judge a faction instead of chasing a tier list
A faction’s win rate answers only one question: how often its players won in a particular dataset. It does not by itself tell you whether the army produces repeatable results, converts event entries into top finishes, or suits the way you want to play. A more useful comparison keeps distinct measures separate:

- Win rate and game count: Read the percentage alongside the number of games, event window and format. A high rate from a small sample is less informative than a similar rate from a broad one.
- Top-cut conversion: This measures how often players reach a high finish, rather than how often they win an individual game. It can tell a different story from overall win rate.
- Consistency and margin: Consider whether results are steady and whether games tend to be close or decisive. A faction’s average can conceal either pattern.
- Format and event mix: Keep singles and team results separate, and account for the kinds of events represented. Results from one tournament do not establish performance across other fields.
- Your own fit: Compare the army’s play style and models with what you enjoy collecting and playing. The available evidence does not establish a universal beginner-friendly faction ranking.
The Infinite Archive’s 2026-W36 Strength Index describes a four-facet approach: win rate, top-cut conversion, blowout differential and consistency. It also states that its default weights are editorial choices, so a combined score reflects the method’s priorities rather than an objective measure of the one best faction. See The Infinite Archive’s faction-strength methodology.

If you are selecting an army for current games, start with the latest 11th-edition rules and points, then choose a faction whose models and play style appeal to you. Competitive indicators can help compare armies, but their usefulness depends on recent, comparable data with game counts, time window and format made clear. The sources cited here do not establish a current 11th-edition ranking or a reliable beginner-ease ranking.

If your question is specifically historical—what looked strong during 10th edition—date the answer. The official February 2024 balance discussion and the single SCO 2026 event snapshot measure different periods and contexts; combining them into one ranked list would imply evidence they do not provide.
