The 2024 Warhammer 40,000 dispute began with a newly named female Custodian in fiction and Games Workshop’s assertion that female Custodians had always existed. Those claims describe different things: one was new to what readers had seen explicitly in print; the other framed the character as part of the setting all along. Neither established female Space Marines, a separate lore question.
What happened in the 2024 controversy?
The flashpoint was the 10th-edition Codex: Adeptus Custodes. Its fiction introduced Calladayce Taurovalia Kesh, a Custodian referred to with she/her pronouns. In a report published April 16, 2024, James Whitbrook described Kesh as the first female-identifying Custodian introduced in Warhammer fiction. He also reported that she had no dedicated miniature and did not appear elsewhere in that codex. Gizmodo’s April 2024 report covers the introduction and ensuing dispute.

On April 14, the official Warhammer account answered the debate: “In regards to female Custodians, there have always been female Custodians, since the first of the Ten Thousand were created.” That was an organizational statement, not a quotation attributed to a named executive or designer.
The tension was between a longstanding setting claim and a new explicit presentation. Readers had encountered a named female Custodian in published fiction for the first time, according to Whitbrook’s report; Games Workshop, meanwhile, said female Custodians had always been part of the setting. Calling Kesh a new addition to what readers had been shown is compatible with describing her as longstanding within the fictional world. The friction came from the gap between those two ways of talking about canon.

Are female Custodians and female Space Marines the same lore question?
No. Custodians and Space Marines are distinct groups in Warhammer 40,000, so an answer about one does not settle the other. The 2024 reporting treated female Space Marines as not established canon at that time and noted that the 2022 Horus Heresy: The Age of Darkness rulebook described Space Marine recruits in male biological terms.
A later wording change did not provide a definitive reversal. In July 2025, Whitbrook reported that the third edition of Horus Heresy removed explicit gender language from a passage about Space Marine creation. The revised wording did not explicitly say women could become Space Marines. An omission may leave room for interpretation, but it is not affirmative confirmation. The July 2025 report describes the change and its limits.

What does Games Workshop say the Imperium represents?
In a November 19, 2021 statement, Games Workshop described the Imperium of Man as satire and a warning, not a model to aspire to in real life. The company wrote: “There are no goodies in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.” It called the Imperium “a cautionary tale of what could happen should the very worst of Humanity’s lust for power and extreme, unyielding xenophobia set in” and added: “The Imperium is not an aspirational state, outside of the in-universe perspectives of those who are slaves to its systems.”
The same statement said Games Workshop would not accept prejudice, hatred, or abuse in its company or hobby, and that people displaying real-world hate-group symbols at its stores or events would be asked to leave. These are the company’s stated positions; they do not by themselves determine how every fan interprets the setting or behaves. Read Games Workshop’s community statement.

What the backlash can—and can’t—tell us
Online arguments show that the announcement became a visible dispute. They do not show what all Warhammer players believe. The reporting documents reactions, not a representative survey, and the consulted sources provide no robust population estimate for the size of the backlash or the share of fans on either side. Comment volume and social posts cannot stand in for one.
The debate also brought together separate questions: what published text had explicitly shown, what the setting could be understood to imply, how Custodians differ from Space Marines, and whether Games Workshop’s stated satirical intent matches the ways individuals read or use the fiction. The existence of angry responses cannot settle those interpretive questions on its own.

What has changed since the dispute?
Games Workshop announced a new edition of Warhammer 40,000 in March 2026. Its 2025–26 accounts describe the hobby as collecting, building, painting, and playing with miniatures, and say rules are freely downloadable in eight core languages plus thirteen additional languages. The company has also described Warhammer as “for everyone.” This provides current franchise context; it does not establish new canon about female Custodians or Space Marines, nor does it show that online arguments have ended. Games Workshop’s 2025–26 accounts provide the company’s reporting.
