The reveal introduced Kaatri, a warrior who makes a pact with the witch Tasha, and confirmed a planned 2027 release for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox. The game is a single-player, third-person action-adventure set in the D&D world of Darkon; later Gamescom coverage offered the first look at gameplay.
What did the Warlock trailer reveal at The Game Awards?
The reveal trailer established the game’s dark-fantasy premise and cinematic tone. Wizards of the Coast described Warlock as an original action-adventure, not a tabletop campaign or an announced sequel. Players control Kaatri, an experienced warrior who makes a pact to wield otherworldly magic against dark powers. Actor Tricia Helfer performs Kaatri through full performance capture, according to the official announcement.
The announcement named PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox as platforms in development and gave 2027 as the planned release year. The official game site still lists 2027. Neither source gives a specific launch date.
What kind of game is Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons?
It is a third-person, single-player action-adventure in a D&D-inspired open world. The official site places the story in Darkon and says Kaatri is searching for someone she has lost when she makes her pact with Tasha.

The premise draws on the tabletop warlock’s connection to a patron, but the video game’s rules and spell system should not be assumed to reproduce the tabletop class. The Dungeons & Dragons Player’s Handbook is an optional reference for the tabletop class, not a requirement for playing the game.
Why did the studio choose a warlock?
Invoke Studios head Dominic Guay told TechRadar in a September 2026 interview that the team began with the goal of building a magic-using character because “creative magic use was at the core of what we wanted to do in gameplay,” then settled on warlocks. The class also offered a story engine: Kaatri must approach a powerful being and negotiate for power.

That freedom has to be bounded in a game. Guay said the team needed to limit the magic system because D&D magic can do so much: “We wanted the player to be creative, but at the same time, we can’t do everything, right?” These are the studio’s design aims, not a promise that every tabletop spell or use of magic will appear in the game. Hasbro president John Hight framed the class in the announcement as one whose “powerful, otherworldly magic” comes at a cost. That is promotional characterization of the game’s premise, rather than a detailed statement of tabletop rules. Hasbro’s announcement includes Hight’s description.
What did the later gameplay preview show?
The reveal trailer was cinematic; it was not the gameplay demonstration. Xbox Wire’s August 28, 2026 Gamescom preview described a hands-off demo and reported that magic is intended to work across combat, traversal, and environmental puzzles. The examples show the kind of flexible interaction the developers are pursuing:
- Telekinesis can throw scenery at enemies or move a boulder into position as cover.
- It can pull water to put out a fire, or combine with another spell to create a route for platforming.
- Witch Bolt interacting with metal and rain illustrates how spells and environmental conditions may combine.
These are observations from a preview demo, not hands-on testing or confirmation that every interaction will be available in the finished game. The official site currently highlights Otherworldly Leap, Tasha’s Leash, and Witch Bolt as examples, while noting that its spell list is partial. It also describes a mix of melee weapons and magic. How will exploration work?
The Gamescom preview says the developers want players to gather clues and find their own routes rather than simply follow waypoints from one story beat to the next. Guay has also described the open world as smaller and denser, a choice he connected to reducing handholding and encouraging exploration. That is the studio’s design rationale, not an independently measured map size or a confirmed set of navigation options. GamesRadar+ reported Guay’s comments on world size and guidance.

The current planned launch is 2027. The official announcement lists PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox; Xbox Wire specifies Xbox Series X|S in its Gamescom platform listing. These are announced platforms, not a basis for inferring exclusivity, performance, or feature differences. No exact release date has been announced in the cited sources.
