Games announced it was closing Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and Warner Bros. Games San Diego—and canceling Monolith’s Wonder Woman game. The company described the decision as a strategic refocus on a smaller group of major franchises. The announcement is historical; it is not news of new closures in 2026.
Which Warner Bros. Games studios closed?
The February 25, 2025 announcement named three studios:
| # | Preview | Product | Price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Grim Monolith (Urza's Legacy) | $529.99 | Buy on Amazon |
- Monolith Productions: Known for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and F.E.A.R.
- Player First Games: The developer of MultiVersus.
- Warner Bros. Games San Diego: Game Developer reported that the studio was established to work on free-to-play mobile games.
Contemporaneous coverage by the Los Angeles Times, Reuters, as carried by The Guardian, PC Gamer, and Game Developer reported the closures. The studios had distinct work and histories; the announcement did not describe them as a single team or project.
Was the Wonder Woman game canceled?
Yes. Warner Bros. Games said development would not move forward. The company spokesperson told PC Gamer: “Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities.”

The Los Angeles Times reported, citing unnamed people familiar with the project, that Wonder Woman had been rebooted and its director changed early in 2024, had cost more than $100 million, and was still years from release. Those are anonymous-source project details reported on February 25, 2025, not figures confirmed by Warner Bros. Games.
No cited report establishes whether the game’s assets or work were transferred to another studio. The cancellation does not, by itself, show what happened to individual employees or their work.

The company’s stated explanation was a strategic change in direction: it said it was concentrating development and investment on Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones. A Warner Bros. Games spokesperson told PC Gamer, “This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them.” The spokesperson also said, “We greatly admire the passion of the three teams and thank every employee for their contributions.” These are the company’s explanations and expressions of thanks, not independent assessments of the teams.
The Los Angeles Times reported that JB Perrette, Warner Bros.’ head of games and streaming, wrote in a staff memo viewed by Bloomberg News: “We need to make some substantial changes to our portfolio/team structure if we are to commit the necessary resources to get back to a ‘fewer but bigger franchises’ strategy.” That memo’s language reinforces the company’s stated portfolio focus.
Financial context reported at the time
The Los Angeles Times reported that Warner Bros. Discovery recorded a $200-million write-down in May 2024 associated with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The outlet also reported a later $100-million write-down due to the failures of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions and MultiVersus; the cited account does not give an exact date for that later write-down.
These reported losses provide business context, but they do not establish that either write-down alone caused the studio closures or quantify the savings from them.
What is known about employees?
The cited reports do not establish a comprehensive job-loss count or the outcome for every employee. Warner Bros. Games’ statement thanked employees, but that does not confirm whether particular people were laid off, reassigned, or hired elsewhere. Nor do the reports verify that staff or Wonder Woman development moved to another studio.
