Yes—in the ordinary sense, Aatrox began as a mortal Shuriman champion. Riot’s biography does not explicitly identify his original species as human, so the most precise canon description is that he was a Shuriman champion before Ascension. He later became one of the Ascended, was known as a Darkin, and was ultimately bound to his sword.
What was Aatrox before he became Ascended?
Riot’s official Aatrox biography introduces him as a mighty champion of Shurima. He was brought before the Sun Disc and transformed into one of the Ascended. The biography does not call him human outright; “formerly mortal Shuriman champion” is the careful way to describe his origin without claiming more than the canon states.
The biography then gives his name: “Aatrox was his name.” His identity therefore began before the transformation, as a champion of Shurima, rather than as the sword-bound being players encounter in the present.
How did Aatrox become a Darkin?
Ascension was not the end of Aatrox’s story. The surviving Ascended were changed by their conflict with the Void. After Shurima fell, Aatrox and the other Sunborn fought among themselves; mortals came to call them Darkin. Aatrox was eventually imprisoned in the sword he had carried into battle.

Is Aatrox’s current body still his original body?
No. Aatrox’s essence is bound to the weapon, and when he takes control of a wielder, he reshapes the host’s flesh. Riot’s champion page describes him as walking Runeterra “with stolen flesh” in an approximation of his former form. His present appearance is therefore not his original mortal body; it is a body made from a host and modeled on the form he had as an Ascended.
The story “The Cage” also presents Aatrox’s experience of inhabiting a stolen body. The distinction is useful: Aatrox is the ancient being whose essence was sealed in the sword, while the flesh he uses now belongs to a host he has taken over.
