The November 2024 claim that Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition was being playtested on PSN was never verified: a Reddit image showed PSN users in an Age of Empires II lobby, but the report did not establish that they were official testers. The game did later launch on PS5, on May 6, 2025—but that release does not prove who was behind the accounts in the image.
What prompted the PSN playtest rumor?
On November 5, 2024, Push Square reported on a Reddit image that appeared to show PSN users in an Age of Empires II lobby. The sighting was suggestive of the game running on PS5, but the report did not authenticate the image or identify the accounts as members of an official playtest.

The image was discussed alongside earlier reporting by The Verge’s Tom Warren. Push Square quoted Warren as saying Microsoft had been “considering launching Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition on rival consoles in early 2025” as part of Project Latitude. That was reporting about a possibility under consideration—not an announcement of a PS5 release or confirmation of a test. Push Square’s November 2024 report is the source for both the image account and the quoted reporting.
Did Age of Empires II come to PS5?
Yes. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition released on PS5 on May 6, 2025, according to Push Square’s PS5 review and game profile. The profile identifies Xbox Game Studios as publisher and Forgotten Empires as developer.

The later release confirms that the PS5 prediction came true. It does not retrospectively verify that the players in the November 2024 Reddit image were official testers; the identity and purpose of those accounts remain unresolved in the reporting.
What should PS5 players know about the released version?
The PS5 edition adapts the game’s controls for a gamepad. Push Square also reports that crossplay requires permanently linking a PSN username to a Microsoft account. These are details of the released game, separate from the unverified playtest claim.

Age of Empires’ support forum includes individual May 2025 reports of PSN sign-in and account-linking problems on PS5. Such posts document users’ experiences, not official confirmation of a widespread or continuing defect.
