The ASUS ROG Phone 7 was one of 2023’s most complete dedicated gaming phones: it combined Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 performance with AirTriggers, a 165 Hz AMOLED display, a 6,000 mAh battery, bypass charging and a landscape-friendly side USB-C port. In 2026, it is a sensible buy only at a substantial discount, with its regional compatibility and condition checked. Its hardware-support period has ended, and ASUS lists security updates through 2027—not the long support horizon of a new phone.
Was it really the best gaming phone of 2023?
“Best” depends on what a gaming phone is meant to do. If the priority is dedicated controls, long-session ergonomics, cooling options, battery capacity and audio, the ROG Phone 7 has a strong claim as one of 2023’s best dedicated gaming phones—and arguably the most complete choice for players who wanted console-like controls and cooling. That is a criteria-based verdict, not proof that it was the best phone for every gamer.
ASUS announced the ROG Phone 7 series on April 13, 2023, with a US starting MSRP of $999.99. That is its historical launch price, not a current price. Its case rested on a combination of gaming-specific features rather than the processor alone: AirTriggers, Armoury Crate performance profiles, bypass charging, front-facing stereo speakers, two USB-C ports and an optional active cooler. - Best suited to: players who spend long sessions in demanding games and value controls, cooling options and sound.
- Biggest trade-offs: a heavy, large body, gaming-focused rather than flagship-class camera priorities, and limited remaining software support.
- 2026 buying rule: consider it only if the price is clearly below newer gaming phones and you can verify condition, carrier compatibility and return or warranty options.
What the ROG Phone 7 offers
These are ASUS’s published specifications; memory, storage, network bands, bundled charger and included accessories can vary by region and SKU. Check the exact listing rather than assuming every ROG Phone 7 is configured alike. ASUS’s specifications page has the detailed figures.

How it performs in demanding games
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Adreno 740 made the ROG Phone 7 a powerful gaming device at launch. The chipset is no longer current-generation in 2026, but its age alone does not make the phone unsuitable: whether it runs a particular game well depends on that game’s demands, optimization and available settings. Qualcomm’s device listing identifies the platform.
ASUS compared the platform with the ROG Phone 6’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and claimed up to 15% faster CPU performance, 20% faster GPU performance and 15% improved CPU power consumption. Treat those as ASUS’s manufacturer comparisons, not a promise of identical gains in every game or independent test results. ASUS’s product overview gives its comparison.
For a gamer, a brief performance peak is only part of the story. A long session builds heat, and sustained performance depends on the game, selected performance mode, screen brightness and refresh rate, ambient temperature, network conditions and whether an external cooler is attached. No single chipset label or refresh-rate maximum establishes stable frame rates for every title. A game may cap its frame rate well below 165 frames per second even when the display can refresh at 165 Hz.

For a purchase decision, prioritize whether your own games run acceptably over a benchmark claim that does not match your use.

Display, AirTriggers and gaming software
165 Hz is a ceiling, not a guarantee
The AMOLED panel’s high refresh rate can make supported games and system interactions look smoother. A game that runs at a lower frame rate cannot use the full benefit, and selecting a higher refresh rate can consume more power. The 2448 × 1080 resolution is a practical compromise for performance: it gives the 6.78-inch screen a large play area without asking the GPU to render as many pixels as a QHD display.
Refresh rate and touch response are different things: one describes how often the display updates, while the other concerns how it detects input. ASUS specifies 10-point multitouch and glove-touch support, but those specifications do not guarantee a particular competitive advantage or make every title respond identically.
AirTriggers and Game Genie
AirTriggers are capacitive controls along the phone’s edges that can be mapped to on-screen touch points. They give compatible games extra inputs without covering as much of the screen with thumbs. Armoury Crate manages device and game profiles; Game Genie provides an in-game overlay with tools such as performance controls, recording, notification handling and supported touch-mapping or macro features.

Landscape-friendly ports and sound
The phone has both a side USB-C port and a bottom USB-C port, plus front-facing stereo speakers. The side connector is useful when the phone is held horizontally because a charging cable is less likely to interfere with a hand. ASUS says the side port takes priority if both USB-C ports are connected; Google data transfer must use the bottom port. See ASUS’s USB-C port guidance.
The phone’s headphone support is a welcome gaming feature, and the AeroActive Cooler 7 adds a 3.5 mm headphone jack. That cooler is sold separately unless a particular regional bundle or used listing includes it.
Battery, charging and cooling
6,000 mAh and bypass charging
ASUS specifies a typical 6,000 mAh capacity, implemented as two battery units, and 65 W HyperCharge. The large capacity is a real advantage for a gaming-focused phone, but it cannot guarantee all-day gaming: game engine, frame rate, brightness, network connection, temperature and performance mode all affect drain. Charging speed likewise depends on the charger, cable and conditions; use the original or a properly rated compatible charger and cable when aiming for the advertised maximum.

Built-in GameCool 7 and the optional Cooler 7
ASUS describes GameCool 7 as a cooling system combining boron-nitride thermal compound, a vapor chamber, graphite sheets and a centered system-on-chip design. The AeroActive Cooler 7 adds thermoelectric, or Peltier-assisted, cooling over the processor area. These are design features, not guaranteed real-world temperature reductions: cooling helps manage heat and throttling, but cannot remove thermal limits or make a game exceed its software frame-rate cap. ASUS’s overview describes GameCool 7.
The Cooler 7 is most compelling for demanding, sustained play or for someone who wants its physical controls and audio features. It adds active cooling, four shoulder-style buttons, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a built-in subwoofer and passthrough charging. It is compatible with the ROG Phone 7 and ROG Phone 7 Ultimate, according to ASUS’s Cooler 7 specifications.
- Consider it for long sessions, hot environments, demanding games or physical shoulder buttons.
- Skip it if you mostly play short or moderate sessions, want a slim setup or do not want to carry another accessory.
- Include its cost in the decision: there is no dependable current price established here, so compare an actual listing for the phone and cooler rather than assuming the accessory is included.
What it is like as an everyday phone
At 239 g and 10.4 mm thick, the ROG Phone 7 is heavy and bulky compared with many mainstream phones. Its large footprint can be awkward one-handed, and its gaming-oriented design will not suit every buyer. Those drawbacks matter more if you want a phone that disappears into a pocket than if it spends much of its time in landscape orientation.
The camera hardware includes a 50 MP main sensor, ultrawide camera and front camera, but sensor specifications alone do not establish image quality. The available evidence supports treating photography as secondary to gaming, not claiming specific camera results against other phones. If reliable zoom, low-light images, stabilized video or computational photography are central to your purchase, compare independent camera testing of the exact alternatives you are considering.

For gaming, front-facing speakers, headphone support and the side USB-C port are practical positives. For everyday use, verify the exact unit’s wireless charging and water-resistance details rather than inferring them from the product category. Gorilla Glass Victus on the display does not mean the phone has rugged certification.
ROG Phone 7 or ROG Phone 7 Ultimate?
The standard ROG Phone 7 and the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate are different models, not interchangeable names. ASUS identifies Ultimate-specific additions including a rear ROG Vision display and enhanced thermal hardware involving the AeroActive Portal. Regional configurations and bundled accessories can also differ. The Cooler 7 works with both models; see ASUS’s launch announcement and the Cooler 7 compatibility information.
For most buyers, the standard model is the more sensible value candidate if its price and condition are right. Choose the Ultimate only when its particular display, thermal hardware or configuration matters enough to justify the difference. Confirm the model number and included accessories in any listing so you do not pay for one configuration expecting another.
Is the ROG Phone 7 a good buy in 2026?
Support: read the dates precisely
ASUS’s support information distinguishes the hardware-support period from software updates: the ROG Phone 7’s hardware-support period is listed as ending in 2025, while ASUS lists two OS upgrades and security updates through 2027. Hardware support ending does not mean software updates stopped on that date, and updates through 2027 are not the same as extended hardware support or a long future support horizon. Check ASUS’s end-of-support listing and its ROG support page.
There is evidence of later maintenance for some regional software builds. ASUS’s support page lists firmware WW-35.0604.0820.85, released April 21, 2026, with a February 2026 Android security patch for WW/EU/JP SKUs. The listing gives a 5.68 GB package. This is a specific entry for those SKUs, not proof that it is the latest firmware for every region. Check the current page for your exact version before installing: ASUS ROG Phone 7 firmware downloads.
- On the phone, open Settings.
- Select System or About phone, depending on the installed interface, then open Software information.
- Check the build number and software version, and compare the device’s software SKU with the firmware package.
- Do not install a package for a different SKU. ASUS specifies matching software builds, such as WW to WW, CN to CN or TW to TW; updates cannot transfer a device between software SKUs or downgrade it. Back up important data before an upgrade.
Use a price and condition test, not a stale launch price
No dependable current retail price or stock signal is established here. The $999.99 figure was the US starting MSRP at launch in 2023, not a 2026 valuation. Compare live listings for the exact model, storage, condition and included accessories. The phone is attractive only when clearly cheaper than newer gaming phones after accounting for the cooler if you want it, battery condition, warranty and return options.
- Buy the standard ROG Phone 7 if it is substantially discounted, its battery and ports check out, and its regional software and cellular compatibility suit you.
- Buy it with the Cooler 7 only if sustained heavy play or the cooler’s controls and audio features justify the extra bulk and cost.
- Look at a newer ROG or REDMAGIC phone if newer silicon, a fresher Android baseline or a longer remaining product lifecycle is more important than the ROG Phone 7’s specific controls and port layout. - Choose a mainstream flagship if cameras, everyday polish or extended software support matter more than gaming controls and cooling accessories.
- Consider a gaming handheld or tablet for a larger screen or physical controls if you do not need the device to replace a cellular phone.
Check used, refurbished and imported units before paying
A matching product name does not guarantee matching network bands, software, warranty or condition. ASUS says availability and specifications vary by market; consult its warranty and regional support information before buying an import.
