WASD and arrow keys swapped? Here’s how to fix it

Try Fn + W first, then test in Notepad. Learn how to identify a keyboard-level swap, fix game-only bindings, check profiles and remappers, and recover custom QMK/VIA keymaps.

Press Fn + W once, then test the keyboard in Notepad or another text field. That shortcut restores normal WASD and arrow-key behavior on many compact and gaming keyboards. It is not a universal Windows shortcut, however: the correct combination depends on the keyboard model.

If the swap also occurs outside a game, it is usually an active keyboard mode, onboard profile, firmware keymap, or remapping utility—not a Windows language-layout problem. If it happens only in one game, fix that game’s controls instead.

First, confirm that the keys are actually swapped

A true WASD/arrow swap usually looks like this:

  • W moves the caret, cursor, or character upward instead of typing w.
  • A, S, and D act like the Left, Down, and Right arrow keys.
  • The arrow keys type W, A, S, or D.
  • All four WASD keys and the corresponding arrow keys are affected.

That is different from a keyboard-layout problem, where punctuation, symbols, accented letters, or other characters appear incorrectly. It is also different from keycaps being installed in the wrong positions: keycaps change the labels you see, but do not normally change the electrical signal sent by the switch underneath.

To separate a game problem from a keyboard problem, close the game and test in Notepad, a browser address bar, or another plain text field. If the keys behave normally there, the keyboard is probably fine and the game or one of its input profiles is responsible.

The quickest fix: try Fn + W

  1. Close the game or application.
  2. Open Notepad or click into a browser address bar.
  3. Press Fn + W once.
  4. Test the keys again.

Normal behavior is:

  • W, A, S, and D type their letters.
  • The arrow keys move the caret or selection.

This works because some keyboards include a built-in alternate layer that exchanges WASD and arrow-key functions. MSI documents Fn + W as a WASD/arrow switch on the FORGE GK300. A Redragon K642WGO manual also documents the shortcut, and Sharkoon documentation describes interchangeable WASD and arrow functions.

Do not assume it works on every keyboard. Some models use a different function key or sequence. For example, the ASUS Cerberus manual documents Fn + F1, followed by Fn + Tab, for transferring WASD functions to the arrow keys. The same shortcut can have an entirely different purpose on another keyboard.

If Fn + W does nothing

Stop trying random combinations such as Fn + Esc or Fn + Windows. On another model, those keys might reset the keyboard, lock the Windows key, change lighting, switch a wireless mode, or select a profile.

Find the exact keyboard model

Look for the model number:

  • On the underside or rear label.
  • On the original packaging.
  • In the manufacturer’s keyboard software.
  • On the product page or support page for the keyboard.

Then search the official manual for terms including WASD/arrow swap, WASD mode, arrow-key mode, interchangeable WASD, alternate layer, gaming mode, profile, key lock, and factory reset.

One-click scans. No signup required.

Follow the documented sequence for that exact model. If the manual provides a reset procedure, use it only after checking the less destructive mode and profile controls. A factory reset can erase macros, lighting settings, onboard profiles, and custom keymaps.

Why this happens on compact and gaming keyboards

Many compact keyboards have limited space and may make the arrow cluster inconvenient to reach—or omit a conventional arrow cluster altogether. A built-in WASD/arrow switch lets the user use the familiar movement keys as arrows in games, text editors, or other applications.

Because the feature can be stored in the keyboard’s firmware or onboard memory, the swap may remain active after you close the keyboard utility, restart Windows, disconnect the cable, or switch between wired and wireless modes. That is why reconnecting the keyboard is useful for troubleshooting, but is not a guaranteed way to turn the mode off.

Determine whether the game or the keyboard is responsible

What you observe Most likely cause What to do
WASD and arrows are swapped only in one game Game controls, a game profile, or an input layer Restore the game’s defaults or rebind movement in its controls menu.
The swap occurs in Notepad, a browser, and several applications Keyboard mode, onboard profile, firmware, or system-level remapper Try the keyboard’s documented swap command, then inspect remapping software.
The swap appears on the Windows sign-in screen, in BIOS, or on another computer Keyboard firmware, onboard memory, or hardware Use the model-specific reset or profile controls and test another keyboard.
A different keyboard works normally on the same PC The original keyboard is the main suspect Check its profile, firmware mode, and manufacturer support procedure.
Several keyboards have the same behavior on one PC Windows software or a system-level remapper Disable PowerToys, AutoHotkey, macro utilities, overlays, and other input tools.

This is a practical isolation guide rather than a manufacturer-certified diagnosis. Microsoft’s keyboard troubleshooting guidance also recommends reconnecting USB devices, trying another port, bypassing a hub, and testing the device on another computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If it happens only in one game

  1. Open the game’s Settings, Controls, Keyboard, or Key bindings menu.
  2. Choose Restore defaults if the game offers it.
  3. Otherwise, assign movement manually: Forward to W, Left to A, Backward to S, and Right to D.
  4. Check for multiple control profiles and make sure the corrected profile is active.
  5. Check Steam Input, controller-mapping software, accessibility tools, mods, or overlays that may be supplying alternate input.

Do not install a global Windows remapper to solve a game-only problem unless the game lacks a usable key-binding option. A global remap can affect every application and may interfere with games that read keyboard input through a different API.

Check keyboard software and saved profiles

A keyboard utility can remap keys, run macros, switch layers, or load a profile automatically at startup. Check both the software profile and any profile saved to the keyboard’s onboard memory.

Logitech G HUB

In Logitech G HUB, select the keyboard, open Assignments, and inspect the affected keys. Switch to the default profile and remove assignments or macros that make WASD send arrow keys, or arrows send WASD.

Corsair iCUE

In Corsair iCUE, select the keyboard, open Key Assignments, and inspect or remove remaps and macros. Also check the device’s onboard assignments. Corsair documents that onboard key assignments can remain active when iCUE is not running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Razer Synapse

In Razer Synapse, select the keyboard, select the affected key, choose the desired keyboard function, and save the corrected profile. Razer’s current support information also notes the transition from Synapse 3 to Synapse 4 in 2026, so use the version and instructions identified for your device.

Other manufacturer utilities use different labels, but the checks are similar:

  • Switch to the default or standard profile.
  • Remove WASD-to-arrow and arrow-to-WASD assignments.
  • Disable macros affecting those eight keys.
  • Check device-memory or onboard profiles as well as software-only profiles.
  • Save the corrected profile to onboard storage if the keyboard supports it.

Check PowerToys, AutoHotkey, and other remappers

Microsoft PowerToys can cause this symptom if Keyboard Manager already contains a WASD/arrow mapping. To test that possibility:

  1. Open PowerToys.
  2. Open Keyboard Manager.
  3. Review the active mappings under Remap a key.
  4. Delete any mappings involving W, A, S, D, or the arrow keys.
  5. Temporarily turn off Keyboard Manager or close PowerToys.
  6. Test the keyboard again in Notepad.

Microsoft states in its Keyboard Manager documentation that closing PowerToys or disabling Keyboard Manager stops its remappings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the swap disappears, also inspect:

  • AutoHotkey scripts.
  • Macro and gaming utilities.
  • Controller-mapping tools such as Steam Input.
  • Accessibility or productivity software.
  • Remote-desktop and virtual-machine keyboard tools.
  • Game overlays that include input profiles.

If you cannot identify the program, a Windows clean boot can help isolate a startup application or third-party service. Re-enable items in groups after testing so you can identify the software responsible.

PowerToys fallback: create a two-way swap

Use PowerToys only after confirming that the keyboard’s built-in swap mode is not active. Otherwise, a hardware swap combined with a software swap can produce confusing or apparently normal behavior in one application and incorrect behavior in another.

To create a Windows-level workaround:

  1. Install and open Microsoft PowerToys.
  2. Open Keyboard Manager and turn it on if necessary.
  3. Select Remap a key.
  4. Select Add key remapping.
  5. Add all eight mappings below.
  6. Select OK or apply the changes.
  7. Test in Notepad or another text field.
Physical or selected key Key to send
W Up
Up W
A Left
Left A
S Down
Down S
D Right
Right D

Both directions are required. If you map only W to Up, you create an orphaned key: no key will produce W. The complete pair swaps the two inputs in both directions.

  • Swap Switches Without Soldering, Hype Clicky Feedback - The upgraded socket accepts almost any switch, and stock Blue switches deliver a distinct tactile bump and audible click on every keystroke.

  • Optional Software for Power Users - Everyday use needs zero software, but for advanced RGB effects and deeper macro profiles, companion software is available whenever you want to go further.

PowerToys is a workaround, not a repair to the keyboard’s internal mode. It must remain running in the background, does not work at the Windows sign-in screen, and generally cannot remap the physical Fn key. Microsoft also warns that Keyboard Manager may affect game performance and may not work correctly with some games or keyboard APIs. If the target application runs as administrator, PowerToys may also need to run with administrator privileges; see Microsoft’s PowerToys administrator-mode guidance.

Do not change the Windows keyboard language first

A Windows keyboard layout determines how key codes are interpreted as characters and symbols. It normally does not turn the physical W key into the Up Arrow key. That distinction follows Microsoft’s explanation of keyboard layouts and QMK’s explanation of how keyboards send key codes for the operating system to interpret.

Windows layouts are worth checking when:

  • Punctuation appears in unexpected places.
  • A US keyboard behaves like an international layout.
  • The wrong language is selected.
  • Accented letters or symbols are incorrect.

The current Windows path is Settings → Time & language → Language & region → language options → Keyboards. You can cycle through installed layouts with Windows + Space. Changing that setting is unlikely to repair a literal WASD/arrow exchange and may only change the symbols you type.

Filter Keys, Sticky Keys, and Num Lock are usually not the cause

These settings are often suggested in generic keyboard troubleshooting, but they do not normally explain a clean exchange of four letter keys with four arrow keys:

  • Filter Keys changes how Windows handles brief or repeated keystrokes.
  • Sticky Keys changes how modifier combinations are entered.
  • Num Lock affects certain numeric-keypad behaviors.

They may explain delayed, repeated, or unusual modifier input, but not a deliberate WASD-to-arrow mapping. Microsoft describes these accessibility features in its keyboard accessibility settings documentation.

Advanced case: QMK, VIA, Vial, and custom keyboards

On a QMK or VIA-compatible keyboard, the mapping may be stored in firmware rather than Windows. Custom boards can have multiple layers, a navigation layer, a momentary layer key, a persistent EEPROM keymap, or a custom keycode that exchanges WASD and arrows.

QMK’s keymap documentation explains that active higher layers take precedence over lower layers. Its keymap FAQ also covers swapped keys and EEPROM-stored mappings.

Use this recovery path:

  1. Open VIA, Vial, QMK Configurator, or the keyboard’s official configuration utility.
  2. Inspect the active layer, not just the base layer.
  3. Check the positions for WASD and the arrow keys.
  4. Look for a navigation layer or a stuck layer key.
  5. Restore the default keymap and save it to the keyboard.
  6. If necessary, clear the EEPROM using the board’s documented method.
  7. Reflash firmware only when the exact keyboard model, revision, bootloader, and recovery procedure are confirmed.

QMK documents several ways to clear EEPROM, including Bootmagic, an EEPROM-clear keycode, and bootloader controls. The correct method varies by board and can erase all custom configuration, so do not use a procedure from a similar-looking keyboard.

Gaming laptops and keyboards without an obvious Fn key

Gaming laptops may expose the swap through a laptop-specific function layer, keyboard utility, gaming mode, or vendor control center rather than a separate external-keyboard shortcut. Test the built-in keyboard and an external keyboard separately:

There is no reliable universal Fn shortcut for every laptop. The physical Fn key is often handled by the keyboard or laptop firmware before Windows receives a normal key event.

macOS: check the keyboard first, then use Karabiner-Elements

On a Mac, first test the keyboard’s own Fn + W shortcut or the model-specific sequence. If the problem is only with modifier keys, use System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Modifier Keys and choose Restore Defaults; Apple’s modifier-key documentation covers that control.

macOS’s built-in modifier settings are not a general WASD/arrow remapper. For an arbitrary two-way remap, Karabiner-Elements provides keyboard-specific rules:

  1. Open Karabiner-Elements.
  2. Choose Simple Modifications.
  3. Select the affected keyboard.
  4. Add the same eight two-way mappings shown in the PowerToys table.
  5. Use Karabiner’s EventViewer if the keyboard reports unexpected key codes.

As on Windows, this is a software workaround. It does not disable a keyboard’s internal swap mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Linux: identify the device before remapping it

On Linux, an evdev-level tool such as evremap can inspect and remap keyboard input across Wayland, X11, and the Linux console. It generally requires elevated permissions and is unnecessary if the keyboard’s own mode can be switched off.

The Ubuntu manpage documents these useful commands:

evremap list-devices
evremap list-keys
evremap debug-events
evremap remap config-file

Use list-devices and list-keys to identify the correct keyboard before creating a configuration. The evremap documentation explains its scope and command usage. Avoid applying a system-wide mapping until you have confirmed that the swap is not stored in the keyboard firmware.

Reconnect the keyboard, but treat it as a test—not the fix

For a wired USB keyboard:

  1. Unplug it.
  2. Wait a few seconds.
  3. Reconnect it directly to the computer.
  4. Try another USB port.
  5. Bypass a USB hub or dock.
  6. Test it on a second computer if possible.

For a wireless keyboard, reconnect the receiver, try wired mode if available, and check whether the active profile is preserved between connection modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These steps can reveal a connection problem or show whether the behavior follows the keyboard. They do not necessarily clear an onboard swap mode. Keyboards with onboard memory may restore the same profile after being disconnected.

When is the keyboard actually defective?

A deliberate four-key exchange is more likely to be a mode, profile, firmware keymap, or remapper than a failed switch. Hardware becomes more likely when:

  • The swap follows the keyboard to another computer.
  • It also appears at the sign-in screen or before Windows loads.
  • The manufacturer’s documented swap and reset procedures do not change it.
  • The keyboard has additional independent failures, such as keys that do not register or send inconsistent signals.

Before contacting support, record the exact model and revision, connection type, operating system, whether the swap appears outside games, and which documented reset steps you tried. Do not flash firmware unless the file and instructions match the exact model and revision; an incorrect firmware image can create a more serious recovery problem.

WASD and arrow-key troubleshooting checklist

  • Test outside the game: use Notepad or a browser address bar.
  • Try the common shortcut: press Fn + W once.
  • Identify the model: use the label, box, or keyboard software.
  • Read the manual: search for WASD swap, arrow mode, alternate layer, profile, or reset.
  • Check software: inspect PowerToys, G HUB, iCUE, Synapse, AutoHotkey, macros, overlays, and controller tools.
  • Check onboard memory: save a corrected default profile if supported.
  • Reconnect and isolate: try another port, bypass a hub, and test another computer.
  • Use a reset carefully: expect custom profiles, macros, lighting, or keymaps to be erased.
  • For custom keyboards: inspect VIA/QMK layers and EEPROM before reflashing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What key switches WASD and the arrow keys back?

On many gaming and compact keyboards, pressing Fn + W once toggles the swap. It is not universal, so check the exact keyboard manual if it does not work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did my WASD keys suddenly become arrow keys?

You may have accidentally enabled the keyboard’s built-in WASD/arrow mode, changed an onboard profile, activated a firmware layer, or enabled a remap in keyboard software. A game-only change is more likely to be a control-binding issue.

Will unplugging the keyboard reset the swap?

Not necessarily. Reconnecting, changing USB ports, bypassing a hub, and testing another computer are useful diagnostic steps, but onboard profiles and firmware settings may survive disconnection.

Can a Windows keyboard language cause WASD and arrow keys to swap?

Usually no. Windows keyboard layouts mainly change characters and symbols. A literal exchange of WASD and arrow inputs usually points to a keyboard mode, remapper, game binding, or custom firmware layer.

How do I fix the swap if my keyboard has no Fn key?

Use the model’s official configuration software or manual to find its profile, alternate-layer, swap, or reset control. If the swap is caused by Windows software, PowerToys can provide a workaround, although it cannot generally remap a physical Fn key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will resetting the keyboard erase my settings?

It may. A factory reset can remove onboard profiles, macros, lighting settings, and custom QMK/VIA keymaps. Back up or record your configuration and use only the procedure for the exact model.

Is the keyboard broken if the swap happens on every computer?

Not automatically. A persistent onboard mode or firmware keymap can behave this way on every computer. If the correct model-specific reset does not help and the behavior follows the keyboard, contact the manufacturer or consider replacement.

The Bottom Line

Start with the least destructive fix: test outside the game, press Fn + W once, and test again. If that fails, identify the exact keyboard model rather than trying random shortcuts. Then check its profile or firmware mode, followed by PowerToys and other remapping software. Use PowerToys, Karabiner-Elements, or a Linux remapper only as a deliberate software workaround—not as a substitute for turning off an active hardware swap.
