Watcher at the Edge is an optional boss in the Sands of Karak in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Reach its hidden area with Silk Soar, then play the Needolin beside the dormant warrior to start the fight. Defeating it rewards the Grey Memento.
Where to find Watcher at the Edge
The encounter is in a hidden area of the Sands of Karak. You need Silk Soar to reach it; the boss waits dormant when you arrive. Both the Hollow Knight Wiki and Game8’s guide describe this route and encounter.
How to wake Watcher at the Edge
- Reach the hidden Sands of Karak area after acquiring Silk Soar.
- Approach the dormant Watcher and play the Needolin to awaken it and begin the fight.
How to beat Watcher at the Edge
The Hollow Knight Wiki lists jumping and burrowing approaches, a three-swing combo, a leaping downslash, a feint, and a block followed by retaliation. Most of those move names are descriptive labels used by the wiki, not confirmed in-game names.
Read the attack, then punish recovery
Game8’s general recommendation is to sprint away as an attack is prepared and strike after its animation ends. The key is to avoid committing while the Watcher is still attacking: create space, let the move finish, then use the recovery window to deal damage.

Use the arena carefully
The Hollow Knight Wiki reports that the boss has 900 health, a game-reference value rather than an independently measured figure. It also notes a Sandcarver pit on the left side of the arena: knocking the Watcher into it damages the boss before it burrows back into an attack. Treat the pit as an opportunity, not a required tactic.
You are not locked into the encounter. The wiki says Hornet can leave through the arena entrance, so retreat if you need to regroup.

The documented reward for defeating the boss is the Grey Memento, according to the Hollow Knight Wiki and Game8.
What the game’s journal says
The Hollow Knight Wiki reproduces this Hunter’s Journal entry for the Watcher: “Old warrior guarding the border of their domain, stiffened by time and awoken by song. They held long at their vigil, far beyond the age of their brethren, yet still when roused they swung their blade with remarkable ease.” The same wiki identifies the figure as the last living member of the Order of Karak; that lore attribution is secondary-source reporting.
