Yes—YouTube still lists PlayStation 3 as a supported device as of August 18, 2026. That listing does not guarantee the app will work on every console, account or region. If the dedicated YouTube app is already available on your PS3, try it before relying on the console’s old web browser. The app, Store access and some features may differ from current PlayStation instructions.
Does YouTube still work on PS3?
Google’s supported-device list includes PlayStation 3. Google also cautions that YouTube may not be available on every model of a listed device. In practice, an individual PS3’s result can depend on whether the app is installed or still offered in its region, the console’s network and account state, and whether the legacy app remains compatible with YouTube’s service.

That is different from saying YouTube has been universally discontinued on PS3—and also different from promising that it will work on every PS3. Google’s instructions usually refer to “PlayStation” or game consoles generally, not to each PS3 menu or app version. Treat them as general guidance and expect some screens or features to differ.
Use the dedicated app if you have it. The PS3 browser is an uncertain fallback: modern YouTube pages may not work properly in an old browser, and there is no current PS3 browser compatibility guarantee in the cited guidance.

What you need
- A working PS3 connected to a television or monitor. Depending on your setup, the video connection may be HDMI, component or composite; Sony’s PS3 setup guide covers HDMI connections.
- An internet connection configured on the console. Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet may be used if available in your setup.
- The YouTube app, if it is installed or available to download on your console.
- A PSN account if the console requires one to access the Store or an online service.
- Optional: a phone, tablet or computer for account activation, or a USB keyboard for easier text entry.
Find or install the YouTube app
- Turn on the PS3 and confirm that it connects to the internet.
- On the XMB, look in TV/Video Services, Video or the equivalent media-app area. The exact location can vary with system software and layout.
- Select YouTube if it is there and launch it.
- If it is missing, check the PlayStation Store or the console’s available applications, where supported. Sony announced a dedicated PS3 YouTube app in 2013, but that historical announcement does not establish that every console can still download it today.
If the app does not appear in the Store, do not assume there is a reliable official reinstall route. Sony announced that the PS3 Store would close in selected markets beginning in 2026 and in other countries in July 2027; the announcement says previously purchased content is expected to remain downloadable for the foreseeable future, but it does not guarantee future availability of this app. See Sony’s Store update. Avoid random “YouTube PKG” downloads or unofficial replacement apps: their security, compatibility and account-safety risks are difficult to verify.
Sign in without typing your password on the PS3
If the app offers an activation-code option, using a phone or computer is usually easier than entering a Google password with the controller.
- Open YouTube on the PS3 and choose Sign in.
- Select Sign in with your phone or the equivalent option, if shown.
- On a phone, tablet or computer, scan the QR code or visit yt.be/activate.
- Enter the code displayed on the TV and approve the account connection.
The PS3 app is a legacy client, so its labels or sign-in choices may differ from Google’s current TV and game-console activation instructions. If activation fails, check that you entered the current code, that both devices have internet access, and that you can sign in to the Google Account on another device. Restarting the console and router can also help.

If activation is unavailable, the app may offer on-screen account entry. Use it only if you are comfortable doing so. Also, connecting a Google Account to a PlayStation account is not the same as signing in to YouTube: Google says the YouTube app still requires its own sign-in. See its PlayStation YouTube guidance.
You can try opening the app without signing in. Google describes guest or signed-out use for supported TV and game-console apps, but that does not confirm the option appears in every PS3 version. If guest access is absent, the client may require sign-in.
Search and control videos
Open the app’s search function, enter a query with the on-screen keyboard or a connected USB keyboard, then choose a result. Google documents searching and playback controls for PlayStation generally, but do not assume that every newer-console feature—such as voice search—is present on PS3.

Button behavior and menus can vary by app version. Google’s current PlayStation page describes features across PlayStation devices; it is not a promise that every control appears in the PS3 client.
After signing in, you may be able to access subscriptions and other account features, but the PS3 library can be more limited than a modern app. Google says purchased YouTube movies and shows can be viewed through the YouTube app on PS3. Purchases cannot be made on game consoles: buy on another device, then, if the PS3 app has the relevant menus, look under Library → Your Movies & Shows → Purchased. Do not infer 4K support from Google’s generic PlayStation guidance. The PS3, its legacy app, the video and your display determine actual playback quality; a 4K television does not make PS3 output 4K.

Can your phone control YouTube on PS3?
YouTube supports phone linking, pairing or TV-code control on some TVs and game consoles. The exact option is not confirmed for every PS3 app. If YouTube shows a pairing or TV-code setting, follow the app’s instructions and Google’s device-linking guidance. If it does not, use the DualShock controller or a USB keyboard instead; do not assume that a modern phone-casting feature will be available.

The app is missing
- Restart the PS3, then check the media-app area again.
- Confirm the console can connect to PSN and that other online services work.
- Check the PlayStation Store or available applications for YouTube, if Store access is available in your region.
- Check for a PS3 system-software update.
- If YouTube still cannot be found, there may be no official download route for your console or region. Store closures make future availability less certain; do not use unverified app packages as a substitute.
The app opens, but videos will not load or play
- Restart the PS3 and router; check whether another video plays.
- Check whether other PS3 online services work. If they do not, address the console’s network connection first.
- Try wired Ethernet, if practical, and reduce other network traffic.
- Sign out and back in, or try another YouTube account to see whether the problem is account-specific.
- If the app has a reset option, try it. Remove and reinstall the app only if the official console interface still offers that option.
Google’s general YouTube troubleshooting guidance recommends steps such as restarting the device, checking app support and resetting the app. On PS3, “update the app” may not be possible if no newer legacy-client release is offered.
Sign-in or activation fails
- Use the activation-code route if the app provides it; enter the current code at yt.be/activate.
- Confirm both the PS3 and the phone or computer are online, then restart the console and router.
- Verify that the Google Account works on another device.
- If the app has an old account saved or an account limit, remove an unused account and try again.
- Do not treat PSN account linking as YouTube app sign-in; sign in inside YouTube separately.
The app is slow or crashes
Slow menus on a legacy console do not by themselves prove the PS3 is defective. Give screens time to load rather than repeatedly pressing buttons, close other applications, keep the console well ventilated, and try wired networking. A USB keyboard can also make search less cumbersome. If the app repeatedly crashes or remains unusable after a restart, a current streaming device is likely a more practical fix than repeated reinstall attempts.

The PS3 browser cannot load YouTube
Use the dedicated app if it works. The PS3 browser is old and may not support what the modern YouTube site requires, but there is no need to treat browser failure as proof that the app also fails. If both routes fail, use another supported device.
Picture quality is poor
Check your connection and try another video, but remember that quality depends on the source, network, app, console decoding and display connection. The PS3 is not a route to 4K YouTube simply because it is connected to a 4K television. If image quality or modern video formats matter, a current streaming player is a better fit.
Keep the PS3 or use a newer streaming device?
Keep using the PS3 if the app already works, you want occasional basic playback, and the console is already connected to the TV. It costs nothing extra and can be convenient on an older setup.
Choose a current streaming device if YouTube is important, the app is missing or repeatedly fails, or you want faster search, reliable current sign-in, updated features and longer-term app support. Google lists categories including Roku, Google TV devices, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV and newer PlayStation consoles as YouTube-capable. Check that any device suits your TV’s inputs and your household; an HDMI adapter alone will not modernize the PS3’s app.
A PS4 or PS5 makes more sense if you also want newer PlayStation gaming or already own one. Buying another used PS3 repeats the same legacy-support uncertainty, while buying an expensive console solely for YouTube is usually unnecessary when a streaming player would do. No current product prices are included here; availability and pricing vary by region and date.
Bottom line
As of August 18, 2026, YouTube still lists PS3 as supported, but that is not a guarantee for each console. If the official app is available and plays videos, use it for basic viewing. If it is missing or unreliable, avoid unofficial packages and switch to a currently supported TV app, streaming device or newer console rather than counting on future PS3 Store access.
