You can monetize a YouTube channel with subscriptions through channel memberships: eligible viewers pay monthly for perks you offer, such as members-only content, badges, or emoji. To turn the feature on, you must qualify for the relevant YouTube Partner Program (YPP) access tier, be in an eligible location, meet the feature’s requirements, and be accepted by YouTube. Memberships are one option—not the same as ads, one-time fan payments, Shopping, or YouTube Premium revenue.
What are YouTube channel memberships?
Channel memberships let viewers make recurring monthly payments in exchange for members-only benefits that you provide. YouTube lists examples such as badges and emoji; creators may also offer other eligible perks. The membership is a continuing promise of value, so explain clearly what members receive and how often you will provide it before choosing levels or inviting viewers to join.
Memberships are not the same as a viewer paying once to support a video, nor are they the same as a viewer buying a YouTube Premium subscription. The member pays for your channel’s membership and its perks; Premium revenue is allocated when Premium subscribers watch eligible content.
How do I monetize a YouTube channel with subscriptions?
- Check your channel’s access. In YouTube Studio, open Earn and review the YPP and feature eligibility shown for your channel. Requirements depend on your location, channel status, age, applicable terms, content, and the specific feature. Meeting subscriber and viewing thresholds does not guarantee acceptance.
- Apply to YPP when eligible. YouTube reviews channels against its monetization policies. If accepted, review the relevant Commerce Product Module terms and activate the available fan-funding features. Creators already using an older Commerce Product Addendum may have different transition steps.
- Design a sustainable membership offer. Set out the perks and any levels clearly. Choose benefits you can consistently deliver; do not promise access or a publishing schedule you cannot maintain. YouTube’s feature availability and channel or content exclusions may affect whether memberships can be used.
- Explain the offer to viewers. Tell viewers what each eligible membership level includes and how it differs from public content. Avoid treating views, likes, or audience size as a forecast of how many people will pay.
- Review the feature and policy status over time. Use Studio’s Earn area for account-specific status. YouTube can review a channel after acceptance and remove monetization access if the channel no longer qualifies or violates applicable policies.
How many subscribers do I need to make money on YouTube?
YouTube’s current Help guidance, accessed in 2026, describes two relevant YPP routes. These are eligibility thresholds, not guarantees of acceptance or earnings; the expanded route applies where available and feature-specific requirements still matter.

So 500 subscribers may be enough to apply for certain earlier-access features in eligible locations, while the higher route is associated with ad and Premium revenue. Neither number alone means a channel is approved, that every earning feature is available, or that the creator will make money. Check the Earn area for your channel’s actual status and requirements.
How memberships compare with other YouTube monetization options
Each model asks the viewer to support or buy something different. The payment mechanism does not establish which option will earn more: YouTube’s published guidance does not provide typical membership income, conversion rates, or a universal ranking of profitability.

YouTube’s earning guidance says eligible creators may promote products from other brands through its Shopping affiliate program. Availability and eligibility apply; the program is product promotion, not subscription income.
What YouTube’s revenue share does—and does not—tell you
YouTube states that the Commerce Product Module pays creators 70% of net revenues from channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks. This is YouTube’s published revenue share for those features, not a promise of a particular take-home amount. Net revenue is not the same as gross audience spending, and YouTube does not guarantee how much a partner will earn—or that a partner will be paid.

There is no supported typical-income figure or standard conversion rate to use as a forecast. Results depend on actual eligible payments and the applicable terms, not simply subscriber count or the published revenue-share percentage.
Policies and eligibility to keep in view
- Acceptance is not automatic. You must apply to YPP, meet the requirements, and pass YouTube’s channel review.
- Feature access can differ. Location, age, channel standing, content criteria, individual feature requirements, and applicable terms can affect access.
- Terms matter. Fan-funding features require the applicable Commerce Product Module terms and feature activation. Existing users of an older Commerce Product Addendum may see different transition steps.
- Compliance continues after approval. YouTube can review channels over time and remove monetization access when requirements or policies are no longer met.
For your channel’s current eligibility, rely on the Earn area in YouTube Studio and the current YouTube Help terms shown for your account rather than assuming a threshold applies identically everywhere.
