wdfcoinstaller01005.dll: Find the Driver Behind the Error

Length8 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

The safe fix for wdfcoinstaller01005.dll errors

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

wdfcoinstaller01005.dll is an old Windows Driver Framework co-installer, not a normal application runtime. If Windows says wdfcoinstaller01005.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the complete hardware driver package that requested it.

The 01005 suffix identifies KMDF version 1.5, a framework version associated with the Windows Vista era. Microsoft documents the relationship between KMDF 1.5 and co-installer version 01005 in its KMDF version history and Stampinf properties.

Do not start by downloading a loose copy of the DLL into System32. The correct file must match the INF, driver, architecture, signing requirements, and hardware package that use it.

1. Identify the device or installer that needs the file

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

The missing filename alone does not identify the hardware. This file has appeared in older USB, modem, biometric, fingerprint, input, bootloader, filter, and other device-driver packages.

  • 𝐀𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚: Rotate the multi-directional antenna to face your router to improve your experience and performance

First, note exactly when the error appears:

  • When Windows starts
  • When you connect a device
  • During driver installation
  • When launching a vendor utility
  • During Sysprep or an imaging operation
  • After an antivirus scan
  • After a Windows upgrade

Then inspect Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Look for an Unknown device, a warning icon, or hardware installed around the time the error began.
  3. Expand categories such as Universal Serial Bus controllers, Modems, Biometric devices, Human Interface Devices, and Other devices.
  4. Right-click the suspected device and choose Properties.
  5. Check the General tab for the device status.
  6. Open the Driver tab and select Driver Details.
  7. Record the manufacturer, device name, driver provider, and any listed .inf, .sys, or .dll files.

If you still cannot identify it, inspect the original installer folder. A legacy driver package commonly contains an .inf file, a .sys driver, a catalog file, and the co-installer DLL. The INF may reference the file through a CoInstallers32 entry.

For deeper diagnostics, open File Explorer and enter:

%windir%INFsetupapi.dev.log

Search the file for:

WdfCoInstaller01005.dll

The nearby lines may reveal the device instance, published INF name, or installer folder involved.

2. Install the current driver from Windows Update

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes

A current Windows 10 or Windows 11 driver may no longer need this Vista-era co-installer. Microsoft states that WDF co-installers are not required on Windows 10 and later in its guidance on removing co-installers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available quality, optional, and driver updates.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Reconnect the affected device or run the installer again.

If the error disappears and the hardware works, the repair is complete. If Windows installs a generic driver but the device loses special functions, obtain the current Windows 10 or Windows 11 package from the hardware manufacturer instead. Some devices require vendor-specific firmware or control software.

When Windows offers no useful driver, Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the work of hunting through multiple hardware support pages by showing which drivers are stale; its free scan identifies issues, while repair and installation require the full version.

3. Reinstall the complete device driver package

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes

This is the most likely fix when the original installation was interrupted, partially removed, or damaged.

  1. Download the driver only from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page or use the original installer supplied with the device.
  2. Confirm that the package is intended for your exact model and Windows architecture.
  3. Disconnect the device if the installer instructions require it.
  4. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  5. Uninstall the related vendor driver or utility if it is clearly identified.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  8. Right-click the affected device and choose Uninstall device.
  9. If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
  10. Select Uninstall.
  11. Restart Windows again.
  12. Run the manufacturer’s complete driver installer as an administrator.
  13. Reconnect the hardware when prompted.

Microsoft describes this basic process in its Device Manager driver guidance.

  • Supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP/ Mac OS X 10.9-10.14

Test the device after installation. A successful repair means the error no longer appears, Device Manager shows no warning icon, and the hardware performs its expected function.

Remove a damaged package from the driver store

Use this only after identifying the correct published INF. Removing the wrong package can disable unrelated hardware.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers
  1. Find the package matching the device manufacturer, class, or driver provider.
  2. Record its published name, such as oem##.inf.
  3. Remove only the confirmed package:
pnputil /delete-driver oem##.inf /uninstall
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Install the complete driver package again.

Microsoft documents the syntax in its PnPUtil reference and warns that careless driver-store removal can cause unpredictable behavior.

4. Check Windows Security quarantine

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes

If the file disappeared immediately after a security scan, Windows Security may have quarantined it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Review recent quarantined items.
  5. Select an item only if its location and associated driver package match the hardware you identified.
  6. Restore it only when the original package is legitimate and signed.
  7. Reinstall the entire driver package afterward rather than relying on a restored loose file.
  8. Run a full scan if the file was found outside the expected installer or driver location.

Microsoft explains quarantine restoration in its Microsoft Defender guidance.

Do not restore an unknown DLL merely because its name matches the error. A tampered or untrusted file is not repaired by being moved back into place.

5. Repair Windows component corruption

Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes, plus a restart

DISM and SFC are useful when several Windows components are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or system files became corrupt. They may not recreate a third-party driver file that was never part of the Windows image.

  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Retry Windows Update or reinstall the affected driver package.

Microsoft’s Windows corruption repair guidance recommends repairing the component store with DISM before checking protected files with SFC.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the device again. If both commands complete without resolving the error, return to the driver package rather than repeatedly running them.

When manually interpreting DISM and SFC results becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan finds instead of making you repeat repair commands without knowing what changed; repair actions require the full version and are not required for this driver-specific problem.

6. Check architecture and package matching

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

Old driver packages may include separate 32-bit and 64-bit copies. Do not mix a DLL from one package with an INF or .sys file from another.

To check Windows architecture:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System → About.
  3. Look at System type.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit components. Those names are confusing, but neither folder is a safe destination for a manually downloaded DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An error saying the file is “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate a wrong architecture, damaged package, incompatible old driver, or corruption. It does not by itself prove malware.

7. Do not use regsvr32 for this file

Time needed: none

regsvr32 is for registering suitable COM or ActiveX DLLs. WdfCoInstaller01005.dll is a driver co-installer invoked through an INF during device setup, not normally a COM server.

Running commands such as these is therefore not a proper repair:

regsvr32 WdfCoInstaller01005.dll

It is unlikely to fix the driver installation and may produce an entry-point, module, or architecture error. Reinstall the complete driver package instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Features are also not the normal remedy. Enabling .NET Framework, Visual C++ runtimes, or DirectX will not replace a missing legacy WDF co-installer unless a separate application independently requires those components.

Why the error happens

The most common causes are:

Cause Appropriate fix
Interrupted or corrupted legacy driver installation Remove the affected device and reinstall the complete vendor package
An old Vista-era package used on Windows 10 or 11 Find a current compatible driver
Wrong 32-bit or 64-bit files Install the matching architecture-specific package
Antivirus quarantine or accidental deletion Verify the source, then restore or reinstall the package
Damaged Windows components Run DISM, then SFC
Stale device instance or damaged driver store Confirm the INF, use PnPUtil carefully, then reinstall
Sysprep or imaging failure Remove or update the obsolete driver from the reference image
Broader system changes or malware Scan the system, use System Restore, or repair Windows

Historically, an INF could copy the co-installer into a Windows system directory during device setup, which explains why some users see the file in System32. That does not mean every Windows installation should contain it.

If nothing above works

Use System Restore if the problem began after a driver or update and a restore point exists:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Search for Recovery.
  3. Select Open System Restore.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the error.
  5. Complete the restore and restart.

On supported Windows 11 systems, you can also use Settings → System → Recovery → Fix problems using Windows Update → Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Microsoft lists these options in its Windows recovery guidance and documents the repair reinstall separately here.

For escalation, record the exact device model, Windows version and build, full error text, installer name, driver provider, and relevant section of setupapi.dev.log. The missing filename alone is not enough to select the correct package.

Frequently asked questions

Is wdfcoinstaller01005.dll a Windows system file?

It is Microsoft-authored Windows Driver Framework tooling, but it was commonly delivered inside older third-party hardware driver packages. It is not a general-purpose application dependency that every Windows installation needs.

What does 01005 mean?

The suffix represents KMDF version 1.5 in the co-installer naming scheme. That version belongs to an older Windows Vista-era driver framework.

Can I download the DLL from a DLL website?

That is not the safe default. A downloaded copy may have the wrong architecture, wrong framework revision, missing signature, altered contents, or no connection to the INF and driver that need it. Reinstall the complete package from Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy it into System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Manual copying can create a mismatched installation and does not repair the driver’s INF registration, catalog, dependencies, or signing. Use the complete driver package.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

Normally, no. This is a driver co-installer, not a normal COM or ActiveX DLL. The INF should invoke it during driver setup.

Does SFC restore this file?

Not necessarily. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while this DLL may belong to a vendor driver package. If SFC finds no problem, identify and reinstall the owning hardware package.

Why does Windows 11 still mention such an old file?

A legacy device, old installer, stale driver-store entry, or imaging workflow may still reference it. Modern Windows driver packages generally should not require WDF co-installers, so the reference itself is a reason to find an updated package.
