A useful weapons comparison table compares systems with similar roles, names the exact model and variant, and shows where each figure came from. It is a reference aid, not a universal ranking: a rifle, machine gun, and launcher do different jobs, so placing them on one “best weapon” scale obscures more than it reveals. For video-game readers, real-world specifications should also be kept separate from a game’s own stats and balance rules.
What a weapons comparison table can—and cannot—tell you
A table can make it easier to scan documented differences between specified weapons: role, design characteristics, listed specifications, or historical and program status. It cannot establish that one system is universally superior unless the comparison defines what “superior” means, identifies the conditions, and supports the judgment with evidence.
Keep factual entries distinct from evaluation. Caliber, mass, dimensions, or a listed operating system are technical data when a source documents them. “More reliable,” “more effective,” or “better” are judgments that need a defined context and evidence; they should not be inferred from a specification alone.
In a video game, the table may instead compare the values assigned by that game’s developers—such as damage or handling—if those values are available from a reliable, version-specific source. Real-world data does not establish how a weapon behaves in a particular game, and game statistics should not be presented as real-world performance.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the scope before choosing the columns
State the category, purpose, geographic or historical period, and exact models and variants included. A chart intended to identify weapons needs different fields from one comparing a procurement program or a game’s item stats. Do not mix those purposes without labeling the difference.
Compare systems with similar roles first. In a 2011 account, the U.S. Army described a course that paired weapons within categories including assault rifles, grenade launchers, squad-level machine guns, heavy machine guns, and sniper rifles. The course discussed operating systems, history, strengths, and weaknesses in that training context; it was not a universal ranking or current procurement recommendation. Matt Stracco, an Armament University education and training technician, said: “Unlike past classes that have focused on one or the other, this will be the first time that the weapons are looked at side by side.”

That category-first approach is especially useful when a table has several entries: compare like roles across consistent fields, then explain any meaningful exceptions. If unlike classes must appear together—for example, to document a collection—identify the chart as an inventory or identification reference rather than a winner comparison.
Use columns that answer the reader’s question
There is no universal template. Select only fields that serve the table’s purpose and can be sourced. For a broad reference chart, possible fields include:

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Category and role: the class the system belongs to and the purpose being compared.
- Exact model and variant: enough detail to distinguish versions whose specifications may differ.
- Country or manufacturer: include only when documented by the source.
- Design characteristics: such as operating system, where a source states it.
- Chambering or ammunition class: use the source’s precise terminology.
- Dimensions and mass: include units and clarify the configuration measured when the source provides it.
- Status: distinguish development, production, and service status, and date the claim.
- Source and evidence date: record the reference and the date or edition behind each entry.
Add a legend for abbreviations, units, and any terms that could be interpreted more than one way. Leave out a column rather than fill it with guesses. If two sources use different definitions or configurations, make that difference visible instead of treating their numbers as directly comparable.
Small example: a comparison framework, not a ranking
The U.S. Army’s 2011 account supports the following structure for a category-based comparison, but it does not provide model-specific specifications in the material summarized here. The example therefore shows what to record, not invented values for particular weapons.

| Comparison element | What the table should record | Evidence available in the Army example |
|---|---|---|
| Category | Pair systems that serve a similar role; name the category. | The course paired weapons within categories including assault rifles, grenade launchers, squad-level machine guns, heavy machine guns, and sniper rifles. |
| Model and variant | Give the precise designation for each entry. | Specific model and variant designations are not stated in the account. |
| Operating system and history | Enter sourced descriptions, identifying the reference and date. | The account says these subjects were discussed; it does not supply model-by-model details. |
| Strengths and weaknesses | State the comparison context and supporting evidence; avoid an unqualified “winner.” | The course discussed strengths and weaknesses in a training context, not as a universal ranking. |
This is the difference between a useful structure and a misleading chart: empty evidence is marked as absent, not silently replaced by assumptions.

The Defense Logistics Agency’s ASSIST catalog lists MIL-W-13855 as an active general specification, with a document date of 10 May 2016. The page’s displayed data-update date was 30 September 2026. The specification’s scope includes small-arms weapons and, as applicable, aircraft armament subsystems and related attachments, accessories, equipment, parts, and assemblies. Those catalog details do not substitute for checking the current revision documents before quoting particular requirements; catalog status and update information can change.
Specialist references also have defined coverage. The BICC SALW Guide, developed with the Bundeswehr Verification Center, supports identification of types, makes, and models and describes visual and technical specifications, but says it is not an exhaustive list of small arms and light weapons worldwide. Small Arms Survey’s Weapons Identification Sheets, published in August 2008, cover selected examples across categories including rifles, pistols, machine guns, and launchers. They are a dated identification resource, not a current comprehensive inventory. Its November 2018 introductory identification guide explains that identifying arms is complex and that no single guide can cover every weapon or ammunition item encountered in field contexts.
For a current yearbook example, Janes lists Weapons: Infantry 2026-2027 as covering infantry weapons in development, production, and service and offering detailed specification comparisons. Its publisher listing states 767 records in total and eight new records; those are Janes’s counts for that yearbook, not an independent count of all infantry weapons. Edition contents and counts are specific to that publication.
Do not confuse weapon inventories with program comparisons
A weapon-identification chart, a technical specification table, and an acquisition-program comparison answer different questions. The U.S. Army Acquisition Support Center handbook archive describes program profiles in terms of purpose, capability, program status, projected activities, and interdependencies. Those fields are suited to comparing programs, not identifying small arms. The archive lists handbook editions through 2023, so an edition should be named when its information is used.

Before drawing a conclusion from any table, check its intended purpose, coverage, model and variant labels, source dates, and whether the entries share a comparable role. Identification references can help readers recognize and research selected arms, but their stated limits mean they should not be treated as exhaustive inventories.
