Use RTMP or, preferably for encrypted YouTube ingest, RTMPS when your platform and encoder are built around that documented workflow. Neither name guarantees a particular end-to-end delay: the ingest, processing, distribution, network and player all matter.
Should I use WebRTC or RTMP for live streaming?
Start with the destination and the viewer experience you need. If viewers must react quickly—for example, during gaming, Q&A, auctions, live sports or interactive lessons—look for a service that supports WebRTC across the ingest and playback path. If you are sending a conventional encoder feed to YouTube, RTMP/RTMPS is a documented option; YouTube recommends RTMPS when you want encryption to and through Google’s servers.
These are not perfectly equivalent layers. WebRTC is a suite for real-time multimedia exchange; RTMP is commonly encountered as an encoder-to-service ingest workflow. The right comparison is therefore between complete workflows, not just protocol names.
| Decision point | WebRTC | RTMP/RTMPS |
|---|---|---|
| What it is in this context | A real-time communications suite using RTP for media, RTCP for control and feedback, and connection machinery for network traversal. | An encoder ingest path documented by services such as YouTube; RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. |
| Best fit | Time-sensitive interaction, when the service supports WebRTC ingest and viewer playback. | Platform contribution workflows that document RTMP/RTMPS and encoder output. |
| Latency | Designed for real-time exchange, but actual delay depends on the whole service and playback path. | No single RTMP-wide delay is established here; ingest, processing and playback determine the result. |
| Interoperability | WHIP standardizes HTTP-based WebRTC ingest to services and CDNs, but each destination’s implementation must be checked. | YouTube publishes current RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings. |
| Network and security considerations | Connectivity can involve NATs, firewalls and relays. Security configuration is a separate consideration from reachability. | Use RTMPS when encrypted ingest to YouTube is required; plain RTMP is not the encrypted option. |
What WebRTC includes—and what it does not promise
The IETF describes WebRTC as “a protocol suite aimed at real-time multimedia exchange between browsers, and between browsers and other entities” (RFC 8835, January 2021). It is not simply “UDP video.” RFC 8834 requires RTP as WebRTC’s media transport and RTCP as an integral part of the media and feedback system, using secure RTP.

WebRTC’s connectivity design accounts for real-world networks, including NATs, firewalls and relays. Its goal is to communicate over the most direct possible path, but that is a design intent—not a promise that every session will avoid a relay or work identically on every network.
For streaming workflows, WHIP is an important development. Published as IETF Standards Track RFC 9725 in March 2025, the WebRTC-HTTP Ingestion Protocol defines an HTTP-based way to ingest WebRTC content into streaming services or CDNs. It gives services a standardized ingest option; it does not mean every platform accepts WHIP, nor does WHIP itself define every part of the viewer playback workflow.
Is WebRTC lower latency than RTMP?
WebRTC is designed for real-time exchange and can support very low-latency streaming, but there is no reliable protocol-wide head-to-head figure here that establishes “WebRTC is X milliseconds and RTMP is Y seconds.” A stream’s delay is shaped by the full path: encoder, ingest, any transcoding or processing, distribution, player buffering, and the viewer’s connection.
Cloudflare describes its own Stream WebRTC capability as supporting sub-second live streaming. That is a statement about Cloudflare’s service, not an independent benchmark, a universal WebRTC guarantee or a direct comparison with RTMP. Treat latency claims as service-specific and check how the service’s player behaves under the conditions that matter to your audience.

What RTMP settings should I use for YouTube?
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1, up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR encoding; and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not protocol requirements for every destination. Check YouTube’s live encoder page before a broadcast because platform recommendations can change.
| Codec and output | YouTube bitrate guidance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | YouTube recommendation; current encoder guidance crawled in 2026. |
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | YouTube recommendation; current encoder guidance crawled in 2026. |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended | YouTube recommendation; current encoder guidance crawled in 2026. |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps minimum; 12 Mbps recommended | YouTube recommendation; current encoder guidance crawled in 2026. |
These figures are not required bitrates for WebRTC, and a codec or bitrate listed for YouTube should not be assumed to work with another ingest service. Match the encoder to the destination’s current specifications and your available upload bandwidth.
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL and recommends it for encryption to and through Google’s servers. If you select a stream key or ingest option in your encoder, use the values and ingest server provided in YouTube Studio; do not share the stream key, since it authorizes broadcasting to your channel.
How to choose a workflow
Choose WebRTC for interaction—if the full service path supports it
WebRTC is a sensible candidate when the audience needs time-sensitive playback and the platform or CDN supports both the ingest method and a compatible player. Cloudflare documents a WebRTC workflow using WHIP for ingest and WHEP for playback, with examples including gaming, live sports, financial news, e-learning, Q&A and auctions. These are examples of Cloudflare’s service, not a guarantee that another service offers the same capabilities.

Confirm support for your encoder or publishing client, ingest endpoint, playback client, codecs, expected audience size and network conditions. A WHIP endpoint alone does not establish that your existing streaming platform or viewers’ players can use the complete workflow.
Choose RTMP/RTMPS when it is the destination’s documented contribution path
For a conventional live encoder sending to YouTube, RTMP/RTMPS is a practical, documented choice. Prefer RTMPS when you want YouTube’s encrypted ingest path. Configure the codec, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio to match YouTube’s current recommendations and the capacity of your connection.
Compare the whole chain before committing
- Interaction: Does the format depend on fast viewer response, or is a conventional live broadcast acceptable?
- Destination support: Does the service document the ingest protocol and the playback method your audience will use?
- Processing: Does the service transcode or otherwise process the feed, and how does that affect delay and quality?
- Scale and delivery: Can the service deliver to the expected audience, and what playback options does it provide?
- Connectivity: Will the workflow work through the firewalls, NATs and network restrictions likely in your production and audience environments?
- Security: Is the contribution path encrypted, and are stream keys or credentials protected?
Cloudflare’s WHIP setup is service-specific
Cloudflare’s current documentation lists OBS 31.0 or higher and FFmpeg 8.1 or higher for its WHIP workflow. Its OBS examples use Opus audio and H.264 video, with a suggested video bitrate of 3,000–7,000 Kbps. Those versions and settings refer to Cloudflare’s workflow; they are not general WebRTC requirements and should be checked against Cloudflare’s live documentation before setup.
Cloudflare’s documentation describes Stream Live WebRTC as going to general availability and says billing for WebRTC delivery begins October 15, 2026. That date is upcoming as of October 3, 2026, so check the current Cloudflare page for availability and billing status before relying on it.

Keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running 24/7
WebRTC versus RTMP is a choice about a live contribution path; it does not by itself solve the separate task of keeping prerecorded video on air continuously. If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel that loops uploaded videos, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs from the cloud, streams the uploaded file as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. The cloud service loops the uploaded videos, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. There are no quality tiers or re-encoding; the same product is included on every plan and only the billing length changes. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded video, not camera-based live broadcasting.
Plans are available by day, week, month, six months or year, and can be canceled any time. The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). Troubleshooting: common protocol and ingest problems
The service does not accept the protocol your encoder offers
Ingest support is destination-specific. Check the service’s current documentation for the required protocol and endpoint. If you are using WebRTC, verify that the service exposes a compatible ingest interface such as WHIP; do not assume that an RTMP endpoint accepts WebRTC or that a WHIP endpoint works with every client.
WebRTC connects inconsistently on some networks
Firewalls, NAT behavior and relay availability can affect connectivity. Test from the production network and relevant viewer networks, and consult the service’s connectivity requirements. WebRTC’s goal of a direct path does not mean every session can establish one without intermediary infrastructure.
The YouTube stream is unstable or looks poor
Compare the encoder output with YouTube’s current bitrate, codec, frame-rate and keyframe guidance. Check that encoding is CBR, the keyframe interval is two seconds and no more than four seconds, and that the connection has sufficient upload capacity for the selected output. Lower the output bitrate or resolution if the available connection cannot sustain it.
You need encrypted YouTube ingest
Select RTMPS rather than plain RTMP where your encoder and YouTube setup offer it. YouTube identifies RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it for encrypted ingest.

Measure the full path rather than inferring delay from the protocol label. Check encoder buffering, service processing or transcoding, the playback mode and player buffering. A service’s low-latency capability does not guarantee the same delay on every network or device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does WHIP replace WebRTC?
No. WHIP is a standardized HTTP-based method for WebRTC ingest into services or CDNs; it is not the WebRTC suite itself or a complete playback specification.
Is RTMP encrypted?
Plain RTMP is not the encrypted option described by YouTube. RTMPS carries RTMP over TLS/SSL.
