The wechatwin.dll error means Windows cannot start WeChat because its application module is missing, damaged, blocked, or unable to load a required dependency. wechatwin.dll is a WeChat for Windows file, not a Windows system DLL or a Visual C++ runtime file.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first matching case:
- The error appeared after a WeChat update, move, or reinstall: repair or reinstall WeChat.
- Your antivirus recently reported or quarantined
WeChatWin.dll: inspect its quarantine history before reinstalling. - The file exists, but Windows says it could not be loaded or was not designed to run on Windows: suspect a mismatched version, wrong architecture, corruption, or a missing dependency.
- The message names
VCRUNTIME140.dll,MSVCP140.dll, or another runtime file: repair that named dependency from Microsoft. - Several unrelated programs also fail: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.
- You downloaded a loose DLL or used an unofficial WeChat build: remove it and install WeChat from an official source.
What wechatwin.dll is
WeChatWin.dll, written as wechatwin.dll by Windows error messages, is a genuine Tencent WeChat for Windows component. It normally sits beside the WeChat executable in the application’s installation directory or a versioned subdirectory.
It does not normally belong in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- a general Windows DLL directory
The exact installation path varies by release and installation method. Both older 32-bit and newer 64-bit WeChat builds are publicly referenced, so the DLL must match the architecture and version of the installed WeChat executable.
Do not treat the filename alone as proof that a particular copy is safe. A modified installation, unofficial patch, or malicious DLL replacement can use the same name.

Fix 1: Check antivirus quarantine first
Security software may have removed or isolated the file. That does not prove whether the original file was legitimate, so review the detection before restoring anything.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
WeChatWin.dll,wechatwin.dll,wechat.exe, or the WeChat installation directory. - Open the detection and record the date, path, and action taken.
- If the file came from an official Tencent installation and the security product identifies the detection as a false positive, use Actions and choose Allow on device or Restore, if offered.
- Update Windows Security, then run a scan of the complete WeChat directory.
If the detection is uncertain, do not restore the file manually. Uninstall the questionable installation and reinstall WeChat from Tencent’s official Windows distribution channel or the official WeChat listing in Microsoft Store.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall WeChat
This is the most likely solution when the error began after an update, interrupted installation, or move to another drive.
Try an overwrite or repair installation
- Close WeChat.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- In Processes, select any WeChat process and choose End task.
- Download or open the current WeChat installer from Tencent’s official Windows channel, or open its Microsoft Store listing.
- Run the installer.
- If it offers Repair, Update, or an overwrite installation, choose that option.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch WeChat from the newly installed shortcut rather than an old shortcut pointing to a previous folder.
If WeChat starts, the missing or damaged module has been restored. If the same error remains, perform a clean reinstall.
Perform a clean reinstall
Back up or export important chat data first where possible. Do not delete user-data folders casually.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for WeChat.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Check that the old WeChat program directory is no longer being used. Do not delete personal data unless you know exactly what it contains.
- Install WeChat again from Tencent’s official Windows distribution channel or Microsoft Store.
- Start WeChat using the new shortcut.
Do not copy WeChatWin.dll from another computer or another WeChat release. A file from a different build can produce an entry-point, compatibility, or dependency error even though its filename is correct.

Fix 3: Read the complete error for a dependency failure
A Windows loader message can mention WeChatWin.dll even when the real problem is a file that WeChatWin.dll needs.
Look for names such as:
VCRUNTIME140.dllMSVCP140.dllapi-ms-win-*.dll- another specifically named Windows or runtime component
If the message identifies a Visual C++ file, install or repair the matching package from Microsoft’s Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable Downloads.

A 32-bit application requires the x86 runtime even on 64-bit Windows. Installing x64 does not replace x86. If other installed applications need both architectures, both packages may be installed.
Restart Windows after repairing the dependency, then test WeChat again. If the message names only wechatwin.dll, do not assume Visual C++ is the cause.
Fix 4: Match the WeChat architecture and version
A 32-bit WeChat executable cannot use an arbitrary 64-bit replacement, and a DLL taken from a different WeChat release may not match its executable.
Check for a mismatch when:
- the file was copied from another PC;
- WeChat was moved between folders;
- an old shortcut launches a previous installation;
- the problem started after combining files from different versions;
- the error says the module is not designed to run on Windows;
- the file exists but Windows reports an invalid entry point.
The safest correction is to reinstall the complete current package. Do not place an x86 or x64 copy in System32 or SysWOW64, and do not mix files from separate WeChat installations.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail
System repair is appropriate when multiple applications report damaged system files, Windows components fail to update, or the problem extends beyond WeChat. It usually will not restore WeChatWin.dll, because SFC protects Windows system files rather than ordinary third-party application files.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test WeChat.
Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC sequence in its System File Checker guidance.
Running these commands repeatedly will not replace a missing WeChat application file. If they report repairs but WeChat still fails, reinstall WeChat.

Fix 6: Update Windows and relevant drivers only for broader failures
A driver is not normally the direct cause of a missing WeChatWin.dll. Consider driver or Windows updates only if WeChat triggers a wider crash, graphics failure, or system instability.
Install Windows updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows and test WeChat.
Check devices in Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Network adapters, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not remove a working driver solely because wechatwin.dll is missing. What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, a wrong version, or the wrong architecture. A replacement may silence one message while leaving the damaged WeChat installation unchanged.
Use the official Tencent Windows distribution channel or Microsoft Store instead.

Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not generic storage locations for application DLLs. Copying WeChatWin.dll there can create DLL search-order conflicts and will not repair the matching WeChat installation.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. WeChatWin.dll is an application runtime module, not a documented COM server.
Running this command:
regsvr32 WeChatWin.dll
will normally fail with an entry-point message or accomplish nothing. It does not restore a missing WeChat installation.

Collect these details before contacting support:
- the exact error text;
- Windows version and build;
- WeChat version;
- whether it came from Tencent or Microsoft Store;
- whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit;
- the full installation path;
- antivirus quarantine results;
- whether the problem began after an update, move, or reinstall;
- whether the DLL exists in the WeChat program directory;
- whether other applications fail.
Then test a clean official installation in a new directory. Review Event Viewer by searching for Event Viewer from Start, opening Windows Logs, selecting Application, and checking errors recorded at the time of the failure.

Is wechatwin.dll part of Visual C++?
No verified evidence supports that classification. Repair Visual C++ only when the complete error specifically names a Visual C++ dependency.
Can SFC restore wechatwin.dll?
Usually no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, not ordinary third-party application files. Reinstall WeChat to restore its own files.
