Well Dweller is a single-player, dark-fairy-tale Metroidvania starring Glimmer, a small bird armed with a matchstick. It is a solo-led project: developer Kyle Thompson says he handles the art, code and design, while his brother Eric makes the music. That distinction matters—the game is not a one-person production in the literal sense.
What kind of game is Well Dweller?
Glimmer journeys through a decaying kingdom to rescue family members captured under a wicked queen’s rule. The adventure combines exploration, platforming, combat, puzzles and secrets, with new abilities opening routes and changing how Glimmer moves. Thompson described its focus simply: “It’s a Metroidvania, so the game is very focused on exploration, platforming, and combat.” (80 Level interview, September 17, 2026)
The contrast is central to the premise: a cute, tiny protagonist in a morbid, storybook world. Thompson has cited classic fairy tales, Blasphemous and the graphic novel Beautiful Darkness as inspirations. He initially considered a rabbit protagonist, but chose a bird because it offered more interesting movement possibilities.
Exploration and progression
Abilities do more than unlock sealed passages: Thompson says he designed them to remain useful in ordinary play and alter movement. Players can also collect trinkets to upgrade and combine abilities, meet characters with their own purpose and backstories, fight bosses, and uncover illustrated woodcut storybook pages. These are the developer’s stated design aims, rather than an independent assessment of how successfully each one works.

Who made Well Dweller—and is it really a solo game?
Kyle Thompson is the game’s developer, but “made by just one person” needs a qualification. In an interview published September 17, 2026, he said: “I make all the art, code, design, etc., and he makes all the music.” The collaborator is his brother Eric, who Thompson says has made music for his games over the past seven years, beginning with Sheepo. So Well Dweller is best described as solo-led, with a dedicated music collaborator.
Thompson also made Islets and Crypt Custodian. He says Well Dweller was built in GameMaker, with Spine for animation and Photoshop for art. He described gameplay design as the most difficult part because the mechanics needed to work together; the game was playable nearly to the end about halfway through development, leaving the remaining time for refinement. He also reworked the matchstick mechanic late in development after its original damage-triggered extinguishing behavior felt lopsided. As Thompson put it, “it just takes lots of playtesting and tons of rounds of revisions to get everything right.”
