The Great Western Greenway, nearby Croagh Patrick, the town’s riverside Mall, and local food and music make up the main visitor mix. This guide is about the Irish town—not Westport, Connecticut, or Westport Island, Maine.
What is Westport, Ireland, known for?
Westport Tourism presents the town as a blend of heritage, outdoor activity, food, and hospitality. Its visitor highlights include the Great Western Greenway, Croagh Patrick, traditional music, cafés, historical attractions, and indoor activities. These are the tourism board’s promoted options rather than an independent ranking of what visitors will enjoy most.
The town’s history is associated with Cathair na Mart, an earlier settlement linked to a 16th-century castle and the seafaring Ó Máille clan. Westport Tourism says the settlement was moved to its present site in the 1780s by the Browne family of Westport House to make way for the estate gardens. The tourism site describes Westport as a planned heritage town; the tree-lined Mall beside the Carrowbeg River is one of its distinctive features. Westport Tourism’s history of Westport
What are the best things to do in Westport?
Walk or cycle the Great Western Greenway
The Great Western Greenway is a shared walking and cycling route that Westport Tourism describes as 42 km long, mainly traffic-free and off-road, with a solid surface. You can choose a shorter outing or plan a longer ride; check route maps and current conditions before setting out. The tourism site says the route is designed for shared use, so keep an eye out for other walkers and cyclists and give them space. Greenway visitor guidance

Visit Croagh Patrick
Croagh Patrick overlooks Clew Bay and is about five miles from Westport, according to Westport Tourism. The site gives its height as 750 metres. The mountain is associated with pilgrimage; the tourism page says Reek Sunday falls on the last Sunday in July and relates the tradition to Saint Patrick. Treat these as claims from the tourism source, and check access, dates, and conditions for your travel year. Westport Tourism’s Croagh Patrick guide
Explore the town’s heritage and cultural life
For a lower-key day, explore the town centre and the Mall along the Carrowbeg River, then look for cafés, traditional music, and historical attractions. Westport Tourism also lists indoor activities, which can be useful when weather or trail conditions make outdoor plans less appealing. Opening hours and current events can change, so confirm details with venues before visiting.
Can you cycle the Great Western Greenway from Westport?
Yes. Westport is a starting point for the Greenway, and Westport Tourism describes the full route as 42 km. Its guidance recommends a hybrid bicycle and says to wear a helmet while cycling. Visitors who do not bring a suitable bike can check the tourism site’s local hire listings for operators and availability. Westport cycling routes and hire information

The tourism site lists options including the West Mayo Loop, approximately 75 km, and the West Mayo 20 km Loop, approximately 20 km. Compare distance, terrain, estimated duration, and your own fitness and experience before choosing; confirm the current map and route conditions with the tourism site or operator.

For the Greenway or Croagh Patrick, make plans around the conditions on the day rather than relying on a fixed itinerary. Weather, route access, and operator availability can change.
