Analysts broadly expected the PlayStation 5 Pro to be a premium, niche console for enthusiasts—not a replacement for the standard PS5. That reading fits Sony’s hardware and software strategy: the Pro launched at a U.S. MSRP of $699.99, adds substantial graphics capability and 2TB of storage, but omits a disc drive and delivers its clearest gains only in supported games and on suitable displays.
The product analysts were evaluating
Sony announced the PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024, and released it worldwide on November 7, 2024. The U.S. launch MSRP was $699.99 before sales tax. Sony positioned it as an all-digital console with a 2TB SSD, one DualSense controller, and no built-in disc drive. The current U.S. store listing still identifies the disc drive and vertical stand as separate purchases: Sony’s PS5 Pro product page.

Its headline improvements were also carefully qualified. Sony claimed 67% more GPU compute units than the then-current PS5, 28% faster memory, and up to 45% faster rendering. It described ray tracing as capable of casting rays at twice, and sometimes three times, the speed of the current PS5, and introduced PSSR, its machine-learning image-reconstruction technology. Those are manufacturer specifications and maximums, not a universal frame-rate increase in every game. The launch announcement is documented in Sony’s technical overview.
The console remains compatible with existing PS5 accessories, including PlayStation VR2 and PlayStation Portal. Sony’s current product page also lists 60Hz and 120Hz display support, Game Boost for some PS5 and PS4 games, and compatibility with more than 8,500 PS4 titles: the current PS5 Pro feature page.

What the three analysts actually argued
| Analyst | Main emphasis | What that implied |
|---|---|---|
| Mat Piscatella, Circana | Audience size and segmentation | The base PS5 would continue to satisfy more than 85% of buyers, while the Pro targeted a smaller group of relatively price-insensitive enthusiasts. |
| Daniel Ahmad, Niko Partners | Positioning, price and messaging | The Pro was premium and niche, but its technical benefits were harder to communicate than the PS4 Pro’s simple 4K-and-HDR proposition. Niko Partners forecast about 10 million lifetime Pro units, roughly 10% of its assumed lifetime PS5 sales. |
| Rhys Elliot, Midia Research | PS4 holdouts and future pricing | The large remaining PS4 audience could be a secondary opportunity, but only with a compelling software reason or bundle. He also saw the Pro as a possible signal of higher future console price floors. |
These were forecasts and interpretations reported by GamesBeat’s analyst discussion, not measured Pro sales or a unified industry prediction.
Who was the PS5 Pro for?
Existing PS5 owners with the right display
The clearest audience was a current PS5 owner with a good 4K television, preferably one that supports high refresh rates, who dislikes choosing between a sharp fidelity mode and a smoother performance mode. In compatible games, the Pro can combine higher image quality, more demanding ray tracing and a 60fps target instead of forcing the same compromise as the base console.
Enthusiasts buying the best console version
The product also speaks to players who routinely pay for premium hardware and notice reconstruction artifacts, shimmering, soft distant detail or unstable performance. For them, the value is not a single benchmark; it is a preference for the strongest console presentation available.
Ordinary and budget-conscious buyers
Piscatella’s estimate that the base PS5 would serve more than 85% of buyers is an analyst estimate, not Sony’s sales data. It captures the practical distinction: most buyers can play the same games on a standard PS5, and the Pro’s gains do not justify its premium for everyone.

Elliot pointed to Sony’s 2024 business-segment disclosure that roughly half of monthly active PlayStation users were still on PS4—about 50 million players by his reading. That is a description of the installed user base, not 50 million likely Pro customers. A PS4 owner who has delayed upgrading may want the cheapest route to current-generation games, making a $699.99 premium model an awkward first step unless a major release or bundle changes the calculation. Elliot’s suggestion that a game such as GTA VI could provide that catalyst was strategic commentary, not a confirmed Sony bundle or promise.
Why the PS4 Pro comparison only goes so far
The PS4 Pro arrived when consumers were actively hearing a simple television-upgrade message: 4K resolution and HDR. The PS5 Pro’s proposition is more conditional. It combines higher rendering performance, stronger ray tracing, PSSR reconstruction and game-specific modes. Those improvements can be obvious in one title and subtle in another, and they depend on the display, viewing distance, selected settings and developer implementation.
Sony’s own wording makes the limitation explicit: PS5 Pro features are available only in select enhanced games and vary by title. The console therefore cannot be explained as “every game runs at 4K and 60fps.” A 60fps or 120fps label can describe a target, a mode maximum or display output capability rather than a locked frame rate in every scene.
Software support determines whether the hardware matters
Sony listed more than 50 enhanced games at launch, including Alan Wake 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, Demon’s Souls, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Sony’s launch-game list.
The strongest examples follow a consistent pattern. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth uses a 60fps-oriented mode intended to approach its graphics mode’s image quality. Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart offer modes that combine higher image quality, ray tracing and 60fps targets. These are developer-specific implementations, not automatic transformations applied to every PS5 game.
The software case has expanded since launch. As of August 2026, Sony’s current product page says more than 100 PS5 titles are enhanced and highlights newer games receiving enhanced PSSR support. That demonstrates ongoing developer support, but a growing list alone does not establish sales success or make every upgrade equally visible.

What the $699.99 price really represented
| Cost or inclusion | What the evidence establishes | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Console | $699.99 U.S. launch MSRP, before applicable sales tax | This was the headline price, not a tax-inclusive worldwide price. |
| Storage | 2TB SSD included | More capacity than the then-current standard configuration, with real value for large digital libraries. |
| Disc drive | Not included; sold separately | Physical-game owners and 4K Blu-ray users must add an accessory, increasing effective cost. |
| Vertical stand | Sold separately; horizontal feet are included | Optional for horizontal placement, but another expense for upright setups. |
| Controller | One DualSense included | Partly offsets the package price but does not erase the missing drive or stand. |
That makes casual comparisons misleading. A disc-equipped base PS5, a discounted current bundle and a tax-exclusive $699.99 launch MSRP are not equivalent reference points. The meaningful question is the buyer’s complete package: console, storage, physical-media needs, stand preference and display.
How the Pro fits different buying situations
Current PS5 owner with a 4K/120Hz television
This is the strongest case. If you regularly choose performance mode but want better reconstruction, ray-traced effects or image stability, supported games can make the difference visible.

Digital-only household
The all-digital design is less problematic if your library is already digital. The 2TB SSD also reduces the immediate pressure to manage installs, although storage value should be separated from graphics-performance value.
Physical-media collector
The Pro is not a drop-in replacement for a disc-equipped PS5. Add the separate drive before comparing total prices, especially if you own PS4 or PS5 discs or use 4K Blu-rays.
PS4 owner seeking an affordable upgrade
The standard PS5 is the more natural mainstream entry point. The Pro makes sense only if premium image quality, a suitable television and a major software incentive outweigh the higher entry cost.
Owner of a basic 1080p display
The visual case is weaker on a small, distant, low-refresh-rate or non-4K screen. A faster console cannot create the same perceived benefit when the display cannot show the additional detail or smoothness.

Ahmad’s approximately 10-million-unit lifetime forecast was tied to Niko Partners’ assumed lifetime PS5 sales and was made before the Pro’s commercial life had played out. It should remain labeled as a forecast; the available evidence here does not establish a definitive worldwide lifetime total.
The pricing debate is broader than whether enthusiasts would pay $699.99. Ahmad argued that a premium tier can coexist with cheaper entry models such as a PS5 Digital Edition, Xbox Series S or Switch Lite. Elliot viewed the Pro as evidence that a future generation might begin from a higher price floor. Piscatella connected potential price increases to a mature U.S. console market in which hardware revenue growth may require a higher average selling price.
Those are three different concepts: premium-tier pricing, the price of a mainstream base console and the blended average produced by multiple models, bundles, storage tiers and discounts. The PS5 Pro can test demand for a high-end tier without proving that every future console will launch above $600.
What the analysts got right—and what remains unproven
- Broadly right: the Pro was designed as a premium enthusiast product rather than a mass-market PS5 replacement.
- Broadly right: its message is harder to summarize than “4K and HDR,” because benefits vary by game and display.
- Still conditional: PS4 holdouts could be an opportunity, but the price makes them a difficult audience without a major software catalyst.
- Still unproven: the 10-million-unit sales forecast and the claim that premium pricing will permanently raise the next generation’s base price.
The practical verdict follows from those distinctions. The PS5 Pro’s technical value is real, but it is conditional on enhanced software, a capable display and a buyer willing to pay for incremental visual quality. For most price-sensitive players, the standard PS5 remains the rational choice; for enthusiasts who will regularly use the Pro’s modes, the premium is easier to defend.
