They are not Steam Wallet money: you cannot normally use them to buy games, pay at checkout, or cash them out.
Use them for things you will actually display or use—such as a profile background, avatar frame, chat sticker, or Steam Deck startup movie. If you are not interested in those extras, there is no need to spend your balance.

What are Steam Points?
Steam Points are a rewards balance attached to your Steam account. Steam describes them as points earned from purchases and redeemed in the Points Shop; your points history records points earned, spent, and rewards unlocked. See Steam Support’s Steam Points page.
They are separate from several other Steam systems:

- Trading Cards and crafted badges are separate Steam items and systems; some cards or items may have Community Market rules. Points are not cards or sale proceeds. See the Steam Trading Cards FAQ.
- Steam XP and profile levels are progression measures. Some event-specific Points Shop badges may grant XP, but the points balance itself is not XP.
- Game-specific currencies belong to individual games and cannot be assumed to have any connection to Steam Points.
How do you earn Steam Points?
Steam says you earn points when you make purchases on Steam, with the amount based on how much you spend. The total is shown in your account. The exact award can vary with the purchase, currency, region, and eligibility; the official material cited here does not establish a universal points-per-dollar or points-per-euro rate. Check the points history for your actual account total rather than relying on a conversion figure from an old guide.
Do not assume that every transaction type qualifies. For a specific purchase—such as hardware, an in-game purchase, a Steam Wallet addition, or a Community Market transaction—check the current Steam purchase information and the points history. Community posts are not a reliable substitute for a current rule covering every region and category.
Steam’s sale support page also says purchases during a sale can earn Steam Points: Steam Sale Event support. That does not make points a sale discount.
How to check your Steam Points balance
- Open Steam and select Store.
- Choose Points Shop.
- Check the balance displayed in the shop.
- Open the points-history option to review points earned, spent, and rewards unlocked.
The desktop and mobile layouts can differ by client version. You can also visit the Points Shop on Steam’s store website; Steam Support links to the shop and points history from its points help page.

What can you spend Steam Points on?
The Points Shop is primarily for digital profile and community customization. Its current categories can change, and an item’s listing describes where it works.
Profile backgrounds and game profiles
Choose profile backgrounds, tiled backgrounds, mini-profile backgrounds, or game profiles to change how your Steam profile appears. Game-themed options depend on assets supplied by the game’s developer; not every game has every kind of Points Shop item. Steamworks explains how developers provide these assets in its Points Shop items documentation.
Avatars and avatar frames
Animated avatars and avatar frames add decoration to your account’s avatar. They are cosmetic: they do not change a game or grant gameplay benefits.
Emoticons, stickers, and chat effects
Emoticons, animated stickers, and chat effects are for supported Steam chat or community surfaces. Their usefulness depends on whether and where you use those features; do not assume an effect appears in every conversation or game.

Steam Deck and Big Picture startup movies
The shop lists startup movies associated with Steam Deck or Big Picture Mode. These are most relevant if you use one of those interfaces, and compatibility depends on the item and current Steam support.
Seasonal badges and community features
Some events or sales offer seasonal badges that can be upgraded with points and may contribute Steam XP. Their availability, cost, and progression details are event-specific, not permanent shop rules. Check the live listing before spending.
Steam has also had community-facing award features, but award controls and mechanics can change. Treat the current in-client listing as authoritative; spending on another user’s content, where supported, is not the same as transferring your points balance.
How to spend points and use a reward
- Open the Points Shop, then browse or search for an item.
- Open its listing and check the point cost, compatibility, and any usage details.
- Select the purchase or redeem control and confirm.
- Go to the relevant Steam feature to equip or use it; purchase does not always equip the item automatically.

- Profile background, mini-profile background, game profile, avatar, or frame: open profile editing and choose the relevant profile customization setting.
- Emoticon or sticker: use it from Steam Chat or another supported community area.
- Chat effect: select it in the applicable chat feature.
- Startup movie: configure it in the Steam Deck or Big Picture settings that support startup movies.
Steam surfaces and item controls can vary. Follow the item’s own description if it names a particular device, profile area, or feature.
Can Steam Points buy games, discounts, or Wallet funds?
No. Points are redeemed in the Points Shop, not used as a checkout balance. They cannot normally pay for games, DLC, subscriptions, hardware, or other store checkout items, nor be exchanged for Steam Wallet funds, gift cards, or cash. They also are not a Community Market balance.
If you are looking for money to put toward a game, Steam Wallet funds are the separate system to check. Trading Cards or other marketable items, when eligible, are also distinct from points.

Expiration and shop availability
The official points and shop pages cited here explain earning and redemption but do not establish a current expiration rule for the balance. Do not infer that your points expire just because a sale ends or an event item disappears. A seasonal badge, limited cosmetic, or game-specific item may stop being available without that proving that your existing balance has expired.

Refunded purchases
Steam’s refund policy describes refund eligibility, including the general 14-day and under-two-hours-played rule for games and software, but it does not specify a complete points-adjustment rule. If you refund a purchase that earned points, check your points history after the refund; the exact adjustment is not established by that policy. Avoid treating points from a purchase you may still refund as settled until the refund is resolved.
Can you transfer, trade, or sell Steam Points?
Steam Points are not Community Market items or tradable inventory objects, and there is no normal direct way to sell, cash out, or transfer the balance to another account. If the current interface lets you spend points on an award or interaction involving another user’s content, that is a purchase for that feature—not a transfer of points or a Steam Wallet gift.
Which Steam Points purchases are worth it?
There is no cash-value calculation that makes one item universally best. Match the reward to how you use Steam:

Do not make extra purchases just to build a points balance: the balance is not a discount on future games, and its practical value is limited to rewards you actually want.

Steam Points troubleshooting
An item is missing after purchase
First check the points history to confirm the transaction. Some rewards must be equipped through profile editing rather than found in a general inventory; others are chat items, consumables, or device-specific settings. Refresh or restart Steam, read the item description, and check the matching profile, chat, or device area. If points were deducted but the reward was not delivered, contact Steam Support.
A seasonal or game-specific item is no longer listed
Shop availability can depend on the event, game, region, and whether its developer supplied the relevant assets. Steamworks documents developer-provided Points Shop content and event availability in its Points Shop items documentation. A listing’s disappearance is not, by itself, evidence that your points expired.
You expected a game discount or Market value
Points are not checkout coupons, Wallet funds, or Community Market proceeds. Check your Steam Wallet or the separate Trading Cards system instead, depending on what you need.
