What are Tactical Pets?
Call of Duty introduced Tactical Pets in Modern Warfare II Season 05. They are companions that appear alongside a selected Operator, not autonomous combat units. At launch, Call of Duty listed Multiplayer, Battle Royale, and DMZ as supported modes for bringing a companion into a match. That is the launch description, not confirmation of support in those modes today.

The Season 05 BlackCell offering included Arthur and his K9 companion, Merlin. The announcement also referred to other Tactical Pets, but the cited official materials do not establish a complete list of pets or their later availability.
How do Tactical Pets work in a match?
They accompany your Operator
The pet appears as an Operator companion. Call of Duty’s official description says Tactical Pets cannot be harmed “in any way,” so they are not vulnerable targets that can be killed during play.

They take part in a Finishing Move
A pet’s combat-related role is an animation within a Finishing Move, rather than an independent attack. Call of Duty instructed players to equip the Finishing Move separately while editing the chosen Operator. Having a pet and having its associated Finishing Move equipped are therefore distinct parts of setting up the feature.
The official sources do not say that pets roam off to attack enemies, deal damage on their own, or grant a gameplay advantage outside their role in a Finishing Move.

How do you equip a Tactical Pet?
- Select the Operator: Open the Operator editor and choose the Operator you want to use.
- Equip the companion: Select the Tactical Pet for that Operator, if it is available in your game account and interface.
- Equip the Finishing Move separately: In the Operator editing options, select the Finishing Move associated with the pet. The launch announcement specifically says this move must be equipped separately.
Call of Duty’s 2023 announcement establishes this setup distinction but does not document current menu labels or interface steps for later versions of the game.
Are Tactical Pets still available?
The cited official announcement and patch notes document the feature’s introduction in August 2023. They do not establish whether Merlin, the BlackCell content, other Tactical Pets, or the feature itself remain obtainable or supported today. Treat the details above as a description of the launch feature, not a guarantee of current availability.
