Its official charts track other measures, including current players and sales. The best install figures available here are October 2025 estimates reported by a secondary source—not an official Steam download leaderboard.
Why there is no verified Steam download top 30
Steam’s Charts overview provides Top Sellers and Most Played charts, along with weekly charts, monthly Top Releases, and yearly Best of collections. Those categories answer different questions; the pages do not establish a current ranking of games by total downloads.
Steam’s live Most Played chart ranks games by current players and includes a daily peak column. It is a changing snapshot of player activity, not a count of downloads or installs. In the chart captured for this report, Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS occupied the first three Most Played positions; those are player-count ranks, not download ranks.
Historical install estimates reported for October 2025
A January 8, 2026 report by Astropedia relays GameDiscoverCo estimates for installs in October 2025. These are attributed estimates, not official Steam totals or a verified current ranking. The report supplies six figures:

Astropedia’s report is the secondary source for these figures. They describe estimates for October 2025 and should not be read as October 2026 totals. The report does not establish a complete, independently verified top 30, so the figures cannot responsibly be extended into one.
Downloads, players, and sales are not interchangeable
- Installs or downloads estimate how many times a game was installed or downloaded over a defined period or lifetime, depending on the dataset’s method.
- Current players count people playing at a particular moment; Steam’s Most Played ranking uses this measure.
- Sales reflect purchases or sales performance, while Steam’s Top Sellers chart is a sales-oriented category rather than an install count.
A game can rank highly by one measure without holding the same position in another. Free-to-play availability, the period being counted, and whether a renamed or successor title inherits an older game’s audience can also affect comparisons. The October 2025 Counter-Strike 2 estimate illustrates the last issue: it includes the legacy CS:GO player base.

How to check Steam popularity without mistaking the metric
- Open Steam’s Charts overview.
- Choose the chart that matches your question: Most Played for current player activity, Top Sellers for sales performance, or the relevant weekly, monthly, or yearly collection for those time frames.
- Check the chart’s label and snapshot timing before comparing entries. A live player ranking can change and is not evidence of download totals.
- For install estimates, require a dated source that explains the period and method. Treat secondary-reported estimates as estimates, not official Steam counts.
What a defensible top-30 download list would need
A credible ranking should identify its data source and method, specify the measurement period and Steam storefront or geographic scope, explain how free-to-play titles are handled, and disclose whether legacy or renamed games are combined. Without those details—and a source covering all 30 places—substituting Most Played positions, seller rankings, or guesses would create a misleading list.
