Square Enix’s official Dragon Quest Scan Battlers Season 1 page refers to Erdrick as a legendary hero and describes equipment associated with him. That confirms the franchise uses Erdrick as a hero name. The page is not a naming guide, however, and does not say whether Erdrick is a personal name, a title, or both in every continuity.

That distinction matters: a protagonist’s label, a name a player enters, a localized display name, an alias, and a later legendary figure are not automatically the same thing. The official material cited here does not classify those cases game by game.
Why online “canon name” lists need checking
A nonofficial SplicedOnline article dated October 19, 2024, purports to list canon Dragon Quest hero names. Its table and prose are internally inconsistent, and it assigns claims to game groupings without enough support. It is therefore not a dependable basis for treating any complete list as canon.

What named Dragon Quest characters do not prove
Square Enix’s official Torneko game page says the story is set after Dragon Quest IV and identifies Torneko as its central character. This is an example of a named-character-led game in the franchise; it does not establish the canon names of the mainline heroes.
